The Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials is pleased to announce that longtime Manitoba basketball official Rick DeGagne has been named the 2026 recipient of the Ted Earley Memorial Award by the Canada Basketball Officials Commission.

The Ted Earley Memorial Award is CBOC’s highest honour and recognizes an official who has demonstrated superior ability on the floor, significant national and international experience, extensive service to the basketball community, leadership at the provincial and national levels, and meaningful contributions to education and interpretation within the game.
A native of Kenora, Ontario, and longtime resident of Brandon, Manitoba, Rick has been part of the basketball community since 1977. His impact spans nearly five decades as a player, coach, official, clinician, evaluator, mentor and administrator.
A former Brandon University Bobcat, Rick played three seasons from 1977 to 1980 and was named the Bobcats’ Rookie of the Year in 1977-78. He was later inducted into the Brandon University Sports Wall of Fame as part of the 1979-80 Bobcats team and also recognized in the Community Leadership category. In addition to this national recognition, Rick will also be part of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2026, with his induction tied to the Brandon University Bobcats program and is scheduled to take place this fall.
As an official, DeGagne has built one of the most accomplished resumes in Manitoba and Canadian basketball history. He began officiating in 1977 in the Brandon Senior Men’s League and has been a MABO member since 1978, working high school games for 48 years and university basketball for the past 46 years. He has officiated more than 1,000 university-level games, more than 100 GPAC and Canada West playoff games, and received 16 national championship assignments, including four gold medal games.
Internationally, DeGagne represented Canada in 37 games as a FIBA official and worked some of the sport’s highest-profile events, including the 1999 and 2003 Pan American Games, the 2001 FISU Games, a 1999 Olympic Qualification Tournament, the Jones Cup in Taiwan, the Nike Hoop Summit and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. At the Sydney Olympics, his assignments included the men’s quarter-final between the United States and Russia, the women’s semi-final between the United States and Korea, and served as the alternate for the men’s gold medal game between the United States and France. Of note, all of Rick`s international assignments were comprised of games with a crew of only two officials.
Beyond his work on the court, DeGagne has made a major contribution to the development of officials across Manitoba and Canada. He has served as a MABO clinician and evaluator, a national referee coach, a Canada Basketball/CBOC NOCP Learning Facilitator, a Canada West referee coach and observer, and as director and clinician at the inaugural Impact Officiating Camp in Winnipeg. He has also served in leadership roles with MABO, the Westman Basketball Officials Association, and national officiating education committees.
DeGagne’s contribution to the game also includes coaching nearly 30 basketball teams between 1979 and 2011, including school and community teams in Brandon and Boissevain. His teams included MHSAA provincial finalists and champions, and he helped launch the West-Fit Wildcats girls club program.
“Rick DeGagne’s career represents the very best of basketball officiating in Manitoba and Canada,” said MABO President Reid Kenyon. “His on-court accomplishments are exceptional, but his broader impact as a mentor, clinician, evaluator and builder is what has helped shape generations of officials. This national recognition is well deserved and reflects a lifetime of service to the game.”

Impact Officiating has announced the launch of a Three-Person Officiating (3PO) Camp taking place September 26 to 28, 2025, in conjunction with the Peg City Showcase tournament in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The camp is open to officials at all stages of development and will be led by Camp Director Rick DeGagne, a respected official and clinician with a wealth of experience at the provincial, national, international and professional levels.
The camp is open to Level 1 through Level 4 officials seeking to upgrade their skill set and to progress their plan of continuous improvement.
Prior 3PO training is not required—basic three-person mechanics will be taught as part of the curriculum. The focus of the camp is not 3PO, but rather becoming a better official.
The camp fee is $375 per official and includes a camp shirt, whistle, notebook, classroom instruction, and live feedback during and after games. Participants will officiate an estimated five games and receive evaluation from a team of experienced Referee Coaches (RCs). A social event will be held Saturday evening to provide further networking and engagement.
There is a maximum of 36 spaces open in the camp, so register now to avoid disappointment!

MATT KALLIO
Matt`s officiating career began in Canadian Collegiate basketball, where he spent 12 years reffing in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and 11 years at the U SPORTS level. In 2012, he expanded his experience internationally by becoming a FIBA-certified official. His international assignments included officiating two FIBA World Cups as well as the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. Matthew is entering his fourth year as a rostered official in the NBA.
MIKE THOMSON
Mike Thomson brings 46 years of experience as a basketball official, including 41 years on the court and 21 years as a FIBA-licensed referee. He is currently the Supervisor of Officials for Canada West. During his officiating career, Mike worked 13 U SPORTS Men’s National Championship tournaments, including 9 championship finals.
Internationally, Mike officiated at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games and completed 15 additional international assignments. He has refereed on every continent where basketball is played, with the exception of Africa. Today, Mike serves as a Canadian National Referee Coach and a FIBA Level 2+ Referee Instructor. His recent assignments include the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, the 2019 and 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cups, and multiple FIBA Americas events. Mike is dedicated to the development of the next generation of officials, with a focus on continuous improvement and mentorship.
JOHN McFARLAND
John is a retired FIBA referee and currently serves on the Canada West officiating panel. He has previously held the role of President for both the Alberta and British Columbia Basketball Officials Associations. Nationally, John holds the position of National Educator for the Canadian Basketball Officials Commission and is also the assignor and evaluator for the PACWEST Conference. A certified FIBA Level 1 Instructor, John continues to serve as a National Referee Coach and is passionate about mentoring officials at all levels of the game.

NEIL DONNELLY
Neil is a Canadian basketball official with over 30 years of U SPORTS experience, having officiated at 13 National Championships, including three men’s finals. A FIBA-certified referee for 12 years, he has worked games across four continents. Notably, Neil was nominated to the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he officiated both the Women’s Gold Medal Game and the Men’s Semi-Final. He currently officiates in the Canada West Conference and the CEBL professional league. Neil also serves as a National Referee Coach and takes pride in supporting the development of officials at all levels.
MARTHA BRADBURY
Martha is a retired U SPORTS official, having officiated at that level for 23-years. Over the course of her career, she was assigned as an on-court official to nine National Championships including 4 at the U SPORTS level. Martha is currently the MABO Provincial Supervisor, having spent 20+ years as part of the Provincial Executive. She was also an Executive Member of both CABO and CBOC. She has been a provincial clinician and evaluator for 15 years in Manitoba. She is a current National Referee Coach, having attended nine tournaments in that capacity. Martha has a passion for working with officials and in helping them develop their game.
REID KENYON
Reid has over 30 years of officiating experience, including 11 years as a FIBA official. His international resume includes assignments at the World University Games, the Pan Am Games, and FIBA Americas Pro League play. He has officiated at numerous National Championships across all levels, with highlights including the USPORTS Men’s National Championship finals in 2010, 2015, and 2020. Reid is currently part of the CEBL officiating roster and has served as a Referee Coach at camps across Western Canada. Locally, he has directed over 10 officiating camps in Manitoba, is the long-time assignor for the WMBA, and has served as President of the MABO Board. Recently appointed as a National Referee Coach, Reid is looking forward to contributing to the Impact Officiating Camp this September.
TIM WARREN
Tim brings 24 years of officiating experience, including 15 years as a Canada West panel official. He is currently the President of the Western Manitoba Basketball Officials Association and serves on the MABO Board. Over the past decade, Tim has actively supported the development of Manitoba officials through evaluations and clinics. He is especially committed to mentoring grassroots officials and supporting the broader basketball community. Professionally, Tim spent 15 years in supervisory and management roles with a focus on team building and conflict resolution. His insightful approach to officiating and player interactions adds value to every game he observes. He is excited to join the staff of the Impact Officiating Camp.
STACY HAWASH
Stacy is an active CanWest official with 20 years at the university level. She has officiated at multiple national championships, including the U15 and U17 summer competitions as well as three U SPORTS championships. Stacy is also a highly accomplished coach having served in this role for the Manitoba U15 and U17 programs. Her teams at Vincent Massey (WPG) are perennially one of the top teams in the MHSAA. As a provincial Referee Coach, Stacy has served as a clinician and evaluator for the past 10 years. She is also a qualified NOCP Level 1 and Level 2 Learning Facilitator. As an educator, Stacy enjoys teaching the sport of basketball to all levels of officials and athletes.
EARL ROBERTS
Earl is an active Canada West official with 25 years of experience at the university level. He has worked numerous playoff series and has officiated at USPORTS National Championships for both men’s and women’s competitions. Earl is also a member of the CEBL officiating staff and has served as a Referee Coach at several MHSAA Provincial Championships, including at the 4A level. Recently, he has expanded his leadership role in the officiating community by participating on committees responsible for assigning games in the MCAC and prep school circuits. Earl is also a member of the Pathway to Excellence committee. Known for his effective in-game communication with coaches and players—and his support for fellow officials off the court—Earl is looking forward to being part of the Impact Officiating Camp staff this September.
MATT DEGAGNE
Matt is an active Canada West official heading into his 13th year at the U SPORTS level. He is coming off his second trip to a CCAA National Tournament - the 2025 CCAA Men's Tournament in Montreal. He has officiated in five Canada West Playoff Tournaments/Series. Matt`s on-floor resume also includes three Summer National Tournaments at which he was assigned 1 Gold Medal and 1 Bronze Medal game. Matt is about to begin his Level 4 certification this fall and is excited to become a camp instructor for the first time to help officials improve their skills.
WYATT ANDERS
Wyatt has been officiating for 21 years at various levels, including nine years at the U SPORTS level and the CEBL. He has officiated multiple CanWest playoff series, including two bronze medal games, as well as both the U17 Men and Women national championships, where he was assigned to the gold medal games. He has served as MABO president and is currently the MBOA Referee Supervisor. He has been a provincial clinician and evaluator for five years. Still young in his career, he is a current educator and has a passion for assisting officials in their development.
RICK DEGAGNE (CAMP DIRECTOR)
Rick DeGagne is an active Canada West official, recently completing his 45th year of officiating university basketball. Throughout his distinguished career, Rick has been assigned to 17 National Championships, including 10 at the U SPORTS level. He also enjoyed a 15-year international officiating career, highlighted by his selection to numerous major tournaments / events worldwide including the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
In Manitoba, Rick has served as a provincial clinician and evaluator for over 30 years and has contributed as a Referee Coach at 10 National Championships. A retired educator, Rick takes great pride in mentoring officials at all levels, helping them refine their skills and elevate their performance on the court.

Today, on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Reid Kenyon.
He has been officiating for over 30 years and is one of 4 Manitoba’s who has held a FIBA international official’s card.
He has officiated in 14 U SPORTS National Championships and numerous international competitions around the world, including the USA Dream Team at Madison Square Garden.
He has been the head assignor for the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) since its inception in 1997.
He is the current President of the Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials (MABO) and was awarded Sport Manitoba Official of the Year in 2015 for outstanding officiating achievements.
It is with heavy hearts that Basketball Manitoba, the Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials and the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association share the news of the passing of Neil Gottfred, an active and respected basketball referee in Winnipeg.
Neil was an extremely active member of the basketball community as an on-court official, clinician, evaluator, assignor and administrator. Neil was a staple of the basketball community for over 25 years and, with his larger-than-life personality, had an absolute passion for the game. Neil's genuine interest in the sport was to work with new and up-and-coming referees to give them the tools and resources they needed to be successful.
Neil served on the Basketball Manitoba Board of Directors for 2 terms in the early 2000s and had been President of the Metropolitan Basketball Officials Association. He had worked closely with Reid Kenyon as a co-assignor with the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association for over 15 years.
Neil's contributions to the basketball community will not be forgotten. He positively impacted many players, coaches, and referees and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Neil's family and friends and ask that you keep them in your thoughts.
Rest in peace, Neil. You will always be remembered as a great friend of the basketball community.
UPDATED FEBRUARY 6, 2023: Neil’s Celebration of Life will take place at the Fort Rouge Curling Club, 750 Daly Street South in Winnipeg, on Wednesday, March 1, at 1:00 pm. Due to limited spacing, the family has asked that people show their respects and allow for others to do the same.
On Saturday, October 15th, the WMBA Anniversary Committee will be hosting Hoopfest for fall registrants at the Sport Manitoba Courts for youth ages 11 and under. This day is fun-filled for our youth which will be a great kick-off for fall league play. The history of HoopFest can be found on our website at www.wmba25.ca.
On Sunday, October 16th we plan to offer a skills competition for all our youth 12 and over divided into two groups representing our male and female athletes also at the Sport Manitoba Courts. This is a new event for our league and we're hoping it will be well received and attended. We will be modelling it off examples already established by others in the basketball community. Again it will be a fun day for all participants in our league and a great kick-off for the fall season More details will follow shortly.
The Basketball Manitoba Super Coaches Clinic is being held at the University of Manitoba on October 21st and 22nd. We will be inviting a coach to speak who has participated in our league for many years and is now coaching at senior levels abroad. Also, we will be asking a well-known representative from the University of Winnipeg to provide some history on the WMBA.
Please feel free to provide your input and suggestions on all of the events mentioned above. As always we're looking for volunteers to assist at each event. We will also promote this through the media and with potential sponsors. I hope you will all join us in making this a memorable year for the WMBA and the youth in our community. We are very proud of the contributions made by all our volunteers over the years and our 25th anniversary will be a great celebration recognizing these efforts.

The league welcomes contributions of videos, photos, and history to include on the pages together with ideas for its 25th-anniversary events it can host in celebration. They are also looking to profile on this page of players, referees, coaches, organizers, convenors, and those who have contributed to basketball in Manitoba and elsewhere through their involvement with the WMBA.

Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA)
League History
Years 1-10 (1997-2007)
After 5 years living away in Victoria and Calgary, Mike Ruta returned with his family to Winnipeg in August 1997 but not before observing community basketball played in both cities. Separate from high school and elite provincial basketball Victoria and Calgary had developed community programs for both male and female youth involving teams selected in community centres throughout each city. Starting at age 5, teams were organized and played at local schools in one-hour intervals involving referees, gym supervisors, coaches and practices throughout the season ranging from October to April.
Before returning, Mike contacted Adam Wedlake, who was employed as program director at Basketball Manitoba. Adam immediately took an interest in assisting with the concept of a community league, and Mike proceeded to contact 25 Winnipeg community centres to solicit their interest in setting up a league. By September 1997, many community centres had committed to proceeding, including Burton Cummings, Chalmers, Fort Richmond, Gateway, Kelvin, River Heights, St. Norbert, Tyndall Park, Vince Leah, Lindenwoods, Fort Garry, Park City, Valley Gardens, Varsity View, Kirkfield Westwood, Dakota and Waverley Heights.
Mike turned to founding members Dale Gamey (Waverley Heights), Jan Mashinter (now Jan Voss)(Valley Gardens), Lori Hiscock (Black) (Gateway), Larry Kabez (Vince Leah) and Adam Wedlake (Basketball Manitoba) to lead efforts throughout the city which included organizing board meetings, preparation of a constitution, schedules and contacting convenors and coaches to kick off the league. Our convenors were many and involved vital members and supporters, including Doug Coates, who designed our logo, which endures today. The first season 1997 to 1998, included 40 teams and increased each year to over 400 teams. In 1998 the WMBA introduced a spring league running from April to June to complement our successful winter league offering.
In 2006 the WMBA endorsed the formation of the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Foundation to finance, build, and maintain outdoor basketball facilities at community centres in major sections of Winnipeg. To date, 6 outdoor courts were constructed with contributions from teams via a nominal player surcharge, contributions from the government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba, the City of Winnipeg and member community centres. The courts were designed by Prairie Architects and constructed by Ted Fardoe through his company Canotech Consultants Ltd. The first court completed was at Garden City Community Club in 2006 at around $110,000, and five others have since been constructed at Oxford Heights, Dakota, Kirkfield Westwood, Whyteridge and Central Corydon community centres. The courts feature a solid aggregate base covered by a Mondo surface, sturdy hoops with plexiglass backboards, a fenced-in surface with lights to allow play in the early evening, and benches for player use, all built to withstand Winnipeg weather conditions. The foundation also awards bursaries to both male and female youth who have participated in the league and desire to expand post-secondary education with continued involvement in basketball as players, coaches, referees or organizers.
Also, in 2006, the WMBA received a grant from a Federal Health department to promote female involvement in basketball. The grant gave rise to a program entitled "Girl – she got game," which was used in all community centres to promote participation in basketball through the WMBA. At the same time, the WMBA introduced a coach of the year award modelled after the exemplary coaching of Bruce Russell, our first recipient. Also, the WMBA conducts Hoopfest for all our younger youth participants who started early in our development and continue today.
Past Executive Directors of the WMBA included Adam Wedlake, Susie Laping, Lee Hurton, Darcy Coss and Sean Close, our current Executive Director Also Past Presidents of the WMBA include Mike Ruta, Dwight MacNeil, Ted Fardoe and current president Terry Wolowiec The WMBA is a non-profit organization that adopted a fair play policy since its inception. Our coaches, convenors, Board of Directors are all volunteers. Without the assistance of Bill Wedlake, who cast support to the WMBA by the University of Winnipeg through profiling the league throughout its early years, including a tournament for league teams at the Wesmen Classic, our referee assignor Reid Kenyon with the assistance of Neil Gottfried, who has served as our assignor for league games since inception, our founding members, Presidents and Board members and so many other dedicated volunteers the league would not evolve to the third largest community sports program in the city.
The mission of the WMBA is to provide a positive environment for all Winnipeg & surrounding area youth, coaches, referees and parents by promoting the sport of basketball through a community centre program.
Objectives of the WMBA:
- To provide a volunteer-based basketball league for Winnipeg & surrounding area youth to participate in.
- To foster and encourage personal and athletic growth, education and development of all players, coaches and officials who participate in our programs.
- To encourage equal participation and strong basketball values, such as teamwork and fair play within the Association.
- To encourage and promote volunteer involvement in basketball through the Association.
- To define, develop, and uphold the rules & regulations of basketball as adopted by this Association and ensure that participating community centres follow the rules, regulations, and procedures presented by the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres.
- To seek corporate and community support for the Association.
Years 11-20 (Years 2007- 2016)
Growing and developing was the mandate WMBA board for the next ten years. The introduction of great programs such as Steve Nash Youth Basketball and the "Training Day" for grassroots coaches, as well as solid concepts such as fair play and zero-tolerance policies, are strong examples of initiatives the WMBA board implemented to promote and enhance the experience of players, coaches and parents. In collaboration with Basketball Manitoba, the Training Day coaches clinic soon developed into the Super Coaches Clinic, which became the largest coaches clinic in the country. Every fall, the Super Coaches Clinic remains a landmark opportunity for local coaches of all youth basketball levels.
In 2007 FIBA rules were adopted by the country's governing bodies of basketball. The WMBA also adopted these rules for our leagues with appropriate modifications to suit youth skills and abilities.
The WMBA foundation in 2008 announced the award of the third outdoor basketball court to the Dakota Community Club. The court was completed and opened officially in August of 2009.
To meet the demands of the competitive club basketball development, the Rising Stars League was also developed for ages 12-15 in 2008. The popularity of this league necessitated the introduction of a qualifying tournament for the 2009 fall season.
At most board meetings, a recurring theme and discussion were "how can the WMBA attract participants at the youngest age groups and maintain them year over year. There were great concepts such as HoopFest, the Christmas Wesmen Classic tournament; however, we wanted more athletes in our leagues. In 2010, the WMBA secured its first corporate sponsor to offer youth basketball leagues to the introductory ages 5-7 years at a significantly reduced fee. Denny's Restaurants was our title sponsor for the youth basketball programs. In cooperation with our member community clubs, this subsidy initiative has proved very successful for the 5-7-year-old divisions for many years. We considered this initiative an opportunity for families to provide affordable playing opportunities while introducing their children to our great game.
In 2012 as part of the league's mandate to increase and provide quality programming, we ventured forward to deliver pilot projects based on the new 3x3 concept. The first was a 3 on 3 league for 6-8-year-olds, where the available court time and the ability for coaches to instruct athletes increased significantly. The second initiative was a 3x3 summer league on the WMBA foundations outdoor court facilities for boys and girls between 15 and 18 years.
In 2011 the Community Wesmen Classic tournament had run its course with the loss of the title sponsor and subsequent loss of support from the hosting facility. In 2012 the league rebranded with the "Winnipeg Sun 3 on 3 Classic Tournament" The tournament was based on the 3x3 play format emulating the future Olympic sport.
Through the growth of the league over the years and the numbers of teams competing for practice gym time, issues became apparent not so much for gameplay however for practice times for all teams. Many discussions regarding the requirements associated with Sport Canada's Long Term Athlete Development model. The league's community club convenors and league coordinators worked tirelessly to build teams across clubs and share gym times as best as possible. By 2012 numerous new community club gymnasiums had been developed in the city, and the practice time pressures were alleviated; these quality venues were also utilized as game-day facilities.
In 2012 -13 we noticed a decline in girls' participation in the league. In 2013 we welcomed Suki Choeun to the board as the Director of Women's Programming. The "Girls Can Play" initiative successfully attracted 190 participants to well-organized fun-based skill camps. Of the 190 girls attending these camps, 150 were first-time participants in basketball. The WMBA moved forward with a new program for 5-7-year-old boys and girls this same year. The Jr NBA program was a 12-week skill and fun-based development camp that followed the Canada Sport for Life guidelines and Canada Basketball athlete development pathways. The first-year pilot had four community clubs run the program for 80 athletes. The NBA facilitates a separate coaches clinic for all coaches involved with the program. These great programs carried on for numerous years.
2014 saw the installation of the final court in the WMBA Foundation mandate to provide one facility in each of our six districts started approximately 12 years previous. It is an excellent achievement of the WMBA Foundation to see through the installation of one of these outstanding outdoor facilities in each of our original Districts. Installations were provided to the following community centers that have been the benefactors of this program. Garden City Community Club, Whyte Ridge Community Club, Dakota Community Club, Kirkfield Westwood Community Club, Oxford Heights Community Club, Corydon Community Center.
2015 and 2016 maintaining the provision of great programming as noted above. The elite arm of the league rebranded from Rising Stars to the Manitoba Basketball League, attracting 29 teams in its first season. The WMBA leagues continue as Manitoba's largest basketball league with the work of club conveners, coordinators, gym supervisors, referees, coaches and of course, athletes.

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association and Peg City Basketball Leagues are moving forward with their 3x3 outdoor basketball spring leagues, pending Manitoba Health Regulations. All basketball activities will support and follow the current Basketball Manitoba and Manitoba public health orders of the time. As we know, pandemic conditions can change with the blink of an eye and should things move in a negative way under any changes to the public health orders, so too will Basketball Manitoba’s and thus all members to comply under them.
Currently, regulations will allow the WMBA and Peg City outdoor 3x3 leagues to operate. This could change at any time and all officials will be notified. Basketball Manitoba /WMBA/ MABO are working together to provide a safety protocol for our officials. This will be updated as required.
Games will be played every Saturday and Sunday starting May 8th throughout the summer with 1 official being required per court. Reid Kenyon will be managing the officiating needs of the leagues and is seeking interest form MABO and JODP officials in officiating in the 3x3 leagues. The fee for service will be $25/hour.
A couple of important points:
- Basketball Manitoba has sanctioned this league and it will adhere to the Provincial Health Guidelines but that there is no COVID insurance. This means that any officials that choose to officiate are aware that they have no personal or job loss insurance coverage due to COVID.
- General accident and liability coverage afforded to all MABO members provided in pre-pandemic times will be provided as in the past by Basketball Manitoba. The cost of $15.00 per official as a pro-rated fee (shortened season) and provides insurance coverage until September 30th. More at http://insurance.basketballmanitoba.ca. This $15.00 insurance fee will be deducted off your first pay.
- Basketball Manitoba / WMBA / MABO have constructed a safety protocol. Details will be provided to those who inquire with Reid by email.
If you are interested, below shows the requirements that must be completed for certification to officiate in the 3x3 leagues. The 2020-21 MABO certification due to COVID has 3 categories. Depending on what category you fit into, you must complete as shown:

Partial Member
$15.00 Basketball Manitoba membership and insurance fee will be deducted from your games fees.
- 3x3 Rules Session – 1 hour Zoom training/videos
Friends of MABO and Non Registered (past members)
$50.00 CBOC and Basketball Manitoba membership fee and insurance fee will be deducted from your game fees.
- Review video from 3 MABO clinic sessions hosted in fall 2020
- Write the FIBA exam
- 3x3 rules session (1 hour Zoom training/videos)
Full Members - identify they want to referee
- 3x3 rules Session - 1 hour Zoom training/videos
- No additional fees as they were already paid in the fall of 2020
Information will follow as per the requirements to those officials who are interested. The safety of our officials is paramount, and I assure you we are working to provide a safety protocol for you to officiate. There is no requirement to officiate as this is a personal choice.

The Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials will be hosting their 3rd annual Basketball Officials Camp in conjunction with the Basketball Manitoba Club Provincial Championships in Winnipeg over the May 12-15 weekend. Any current MABO official who may be interested in getting evaluated with the use of video are asked to consider attending this professional development opportunity. The tools used at the camp are the most productive way of analyzing yourself as a basketball official.

In July 2013, Reid was assigned to work the FISU Games in Kazan, Russia. There he earned the opportunity to officiate the Men’s Gold Medal Game between the host Russia and Australia by being selected the top official amongst 49 other referees in the world!
On top of the opportunity to work the FIBA Americas League in Xalapa, Mexico. The league features top Central and South American national and professional teams in regular league play. He was one of 3 Canadians selected to this level of play. He is a regular fixture at both the high school and university level of play in Manitoba and Canada. Leading up to the international events, Reid continued with his provincial and national commitments through the winter and spring regularly working at both the Manitoba High School Provincial Championships and the CIS Men’s National Championships level.
To add to an already busy summer for his own referee development, Reid was the Camp Director for the third ever MABO Officials Camp which coincided with the Basketball Manitoba Club Basketball Championships. The May 2013 event invited 25 of the next up and coming basketball officials in Manitoba to the weekend camp that featured evaluations, presentations, video and classroom sessions.

The Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials is pleased to offer the MABO High School Basketball Camp on May 8-11, 2014. This camp is focused on 2 person mechanics and will take place in conjunction with the Basketball Manitoba Club Provincial Championships.
This camp is directly focused on high school officials who want to improve and passionate about taking the next step in their respected conferences. Here is the camp details:
MABO High School Officials Camp
- May 8-11, 2014
- University Of Manitoba and/or University of Winnipeg
- Maximum number of officials will be 20 for the camp
- 6 Top Quality Evaluators
- Minimum of 5 games with 2 Evaluators on your floor for each game.
- Minimum of 1 game video taped for you to take home
- Evaluator feedback - before game / during game / after game / along with booklet of comments to take home
- Classroom Sessions
- Camp Wearables included

FIBA Americas has announced that Winnipeg's Referee Reid Kenyon has been selected as one 3 other Canadians to officiate in the 2014 FIBA Americas League in Xalapa, Mexico this February. Reid is no stranger to the world basketball scene with a number of international assignments under his belt including last summer to the World Universiade Games in Kazan, Russia and a Pre-Olympic event at Madison Square Gardens in New York City in 2010.
