The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) has announced that registration for its Fall 2026–Winter 2027 Community League will open on Monday, August 17, 2026. The city-wide program welcomes players ages 7–17 and runs from October 2026 through March 2027, with registration available through each player’s local community centre.

WMBA teams are formed according to community centre catchment areas and compete against teams from across Winnipeg. If a player’s registered community centre is unable to host a team, the player will be transferred to the nearest community centre able to accept them. The league follows fair-play and zero-tolerance standards designed to provide young athletes with a fun, safe and positive basketball experience.

League Divisions and Formats

  • Ages 7–8 (co-ed): One Saturday game per week, plus practices; 3-on-3 cross-court format.
  • Ages 9–12 girls and ages 9–13 boys: One Saturday game per week, plus practices. Ages 9–10 play 3-on-3 cross-court games; ages 11–13 boys and 11–12 girls play 5-on-5 full-court games.
  • Ages 13–17 girls and ages 14–17 boys: One Sunday game per week, plus practices; 5-on-5 full-court format.

Important Dates

  • Registration opens: Monday, August 17, 2026
  • Registration closes: Friday, September 18, 2026
  • Team building and league administration: September 20–30, 2026
  • Practices begin: Between October 1 and October 16, 2026
  • League games, playoffs and City Championships: Mid March 2027

League Fees

Total fees consist of the WMBA membership fee, which is still to be announced, plus the applicable community club basketball fee. Community club fees generally range from $80 to $100. WMBA maintains a no-refund policy, although exceptions may be considered at the discretion of the Executive Director.

The total player fee will be $295 each  

Volunteer Coaches Needed

WMBA is also seeking volunteer coaches to help support teams and shape the next generation of basketball players. Volunteer coaches are essential to delivering a positive experience for athletes and strengthening basketball within Winnipeg communities.

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA), in partnership with Elevate, has announced the return of the WMBA x ELEVATE 3x3 Youth Summer League for July and August 2026, bringing fast-paced outdoor basketball, elite skill development, and flexible summer programming opportunities to youth across Winnipeg.

Designed for players ages 8-17, the program combines the excitement of 3x3 basketball with high-level coaching from university and professional athletes, creating an engaging environment focused on player development, confidence, and fun.

The league will operate at multiple outdoor community court locations throughout Winnipeg, including Garden City, Corydon, Whyte Ridge, Dakota, Oxford Heights, and Kirkfield Westwood Community Centres.

The WMBA x ELEVATE 3x3 Summer League continues to grow as one of Winnipeg’s premier summer basketball development opportunities, offering athletes a chance to stay active, sharpen their skills, and compete in a flexible format that works for families during the busy summer months.

Players will benefit from the unique advantages of the internationally recognized 3x3 game format, which promotes more ball touches, faster decision-making, increased offensive opportunities, and greater player involvement throughout every game.

League organizers noted that the program emphasizes both development and accessibility, with no team practices required and flexible attendance options available for families managing vacations and summer schedules.

Program highlights include:

  • Fast-paced half-court 3x3 gameplay
  • Elite skills training sessions led by experienced athletes and coaches

The full league registration fee is $210 per player and includes:

  • Reversible WMBA x ELEVATE jersey
  • Seven weeks of skill sessions and games
  • Playoff tournament participation
  • Championship shirts and medals
  • Coaching, game management, and media content coverage

A Skills-Only option is also available for $175 per player. Players in the 10U boys and girls divisions may register for Tuesday skill sessions only, while older athletes interested exclusively in skills training may contact WMBA directly for registration assistance.

Participants register individually, with the option to request teammates during registration. WMBA will build balanced teams and provide coaches for all groups.

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) has announced that its 2026 Spring League Playoffs, with hundreds of young athletes set to compete for division championships across multiple age groups beginning this weekend.

The annual playoff weekend marks the culmination of the WMBA Spring League season and will feature teams from across the greater Winnipeg area competing in divisions ranging from ages 11 through 18.

Playoff action will begin on Saturday with the 11 to 13 age divisions before continuing on Sunday with the 14 to 18 age divisions.

The WMBA is reminding all players, coaches, parents, and spectators that playoff basketball should remain a positive and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. To help ensure a safe and respectful environment throughout the weekend, WMBA staff and Board members will be present at facilities and games to support participants and monitor conduct.

Saturday’s playoff schedule will feature the following divisions:

• 11 Boys Black
• 11 Boys Silver
• 11-12 Girls Black
• 11-12 Girls Silver
• 11-12 Girls White
• 12 Boys Black
• 12 Boys Silver
• 12 Boys White

Participants are asked to arrive at least 20 minutes prior to their scheduled game times to assist with tournament operations and game scheduling.

Playoff brackets will be updated throughout each day as results are reported and championship matchups are determined.

The WMBA Spring League continues to be one of Manitoba’s largest youth basketball programs, providing opportunities for thousands of young athletes each year to learn, compete, and develop through organized basketball competition.

 The WMBA Foundation has announced that applications are now open for its 2026 Foundation Scholarship program.

The scholarship program will award two scholarships of up to $500 each to graduating students who have made a meaningful impact within the basketball community through their involvement with the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association. Eligible applicants include players, referees, coaches, and other basketball leaders who have demonstrated commitment, leadership, and a continued investment in the game.

The scholarships are intended to support graduating students as they move on to post-secondary studies, including college, university, or trade school. The program recognizes the important role young leaders play in strengthening the basketball community, whether that contribution has come on the court, on the bench, or behind the whistle.

Applicants must have been involved in WMBA and must be planning to continue their education after graduation. The application deadline is Thursday, April 30, 2026.

Winnipeg Minor Basketball has announced its 9-week Spring Skills Development Program, offering players an opportunity to continue their development in a structured and supportive training environment this spring.

The program will begin the weekend of April 11-12, 2026, and run on Saturdays and Sundays through June 13-14 at Linden Woods Community Centre. The sessions will feature one-hour training blocks focused on building confidence, improving fundamental basketball skills, and strengthening overall gameplay.

According to WMBA, the program will be led by experienced coaches, including current university athletes, and is designed to provide a fun and encouraging setting for players to grow their skills on the court.

The program is open to both currently registered WMBA players and non-WMBA players, with registration limited to 20 participants per group.

Program fees are $95 for currently registered WMBA players and $125 for non-WMBA players.

Registration closes on Thursday, April 10, 2026. WMBA notes that spots are already beginning to fill.

The Spring Skills Development Program is intended to give players access to additional training opportunities during the spring season while supporting continued skill development and enjoyment of the game.

Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association has announced that WMBA Playoff brackets are now live for the 2026 playoffs, running across two game days: Saturday, February 28 (11U-13U divisions) and Sunday, March 1, 2026 (13U-18U divisions).

Saturday playoff divisions (Feb 28) include: 11 Boys (Black/Silver/White), 11-12 Girls, 12 Boys (Black/Silver), and 13 Boys (Black/Silver/White).   Sunday playoff divisions (Mar 1) include: 13-14 Girls, 14 Boys (Black/Silver), 15 Boys (Black/White), 15-17 Girls, and 16-18 Boys (Black/Silver). Teams are asked to arrive 20 minutes prior to their scheduled game time.

The 2nd Annual Posthumus Family Hoopfest in Memory of Chad Posthumus is a special day dedicated to celebrating community spirit, skill development, and the love of basketball — all in honour of Chad Posthumus.

Hosted by the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA), this free, family-friendly event brings players, families, and fans together for a day of fun, connection, and shared passion for the game.

Honouring Chad Posthumus

This year’s event has been renamed in memory of Chad Posthumus, a long-time WMBA player, proud Winnipegger and Winnipeg Sea Bears star who passed away on November 20, 2024, at the age of 33.

Chad’s impact on the court and in the community was immeasurable. His dedication, leadership, and love for the game continue to inspire the next generation of players.

The Posthumus Family Hoopfest in Memory of Chad Posthumus is our way of celebrating that legacy — a day for the community to come together, honour Chad’s contributions to the WMBA and basketball in Winnipeg, play hard, and share in the joy and spirit of the game he loved.

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association is seeking individuals (ages 18 and above) to work as Gym Supervisors with the League.  Responsibilities include setting up and closing the gym on game days, transporting game-day equipment to and from the gym, and ensuring the day runs smoothly and safely in accordance with League rules.

Games are played throughout Winnipeg on Saturdays and Sundays, year-round. The rate of pay is up to $18 per hour, depending on qualifications. Employees must be available to work most weekends, be knowledgeable about basketball, and have access to a vehicle. There is the potential to work 20 hours per weekend.

Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association has announced the launch of its 2026 WMBA Winter Skills Development Program, running from January 10 to March 8, 2026, on Saturdays and Sundays. Registration is now open.

The program features a progressive skills curriculum designed specifically for WMBA athletes and is delivered by Manitoba’s top skill coaches alongside current university athletes. Sessions emphasize skill development, decision-making, and game play in a structured and age-appropriate environment.

A free WMBA skills session will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2025, for players aged 13 to 17. All sessions are currently open, with limited spots available.


PROGRAM DETAILS

  • Duration: 9 weeks
  • Session Format: 1 hour of skill development and play
  • Days: Saturdays and Sundays
  • Locations: Lindenwoods Community Centre, Salisbury School, Sport Manitoba
  • Group Size: 20 athletes per group

Every effort will be made to place families at the closest gym location. Age groups and locations may be merged based on registration numbers.

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) has announced a new Skills Development Program, offering focused, one-hour training sessions designed to help young players strengthen their fundamentals in a fun, structured, and positive environment. The program begins Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Lindenwoods Community Centre and is open to boys and girls ages 6–12.

Each session is led by experienced youth development coaches and introduces key basketball skills through a mix of drills, games, and competitions. Groups are separated by age and gender to ensure appropriate challenge and maximum development. Each training block is capped at 18 participants.

The first session is free for all participants, with future sessions available at an affordable rate. Current WMBA players will receive a reduced program fee.

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) has announced the hiring of Jeni Monton as its new Operations Manager.

Jeni brings a strong background in sport administration and basketball development to the position. Her previous experience includes roles with Sport Manitoba Coaching and Sport Manitoba Community Programs, where she contributed to community engagement, program delivery, and operational coordination.

As a former athlete, Jeni competed for three years in the Manitoba Provincial Team Program and played four seasons with the University of Manitoba Bisons Women’s Basketball Team. She continues to give back to the sport as an Assistant Coach with the Université de Saint-Boniface Rouge Women’s Basketball Program.

Jeni commented, "I am excited to join the WMBA and give back to the game that gave me so much growing up!" 

In her new role, Jeni will oversee the day-to-day operations of the WMBA office and provide administrative and event support for the province’s largest youth basketball league, helping grow basketball at the grassroots level across the city.  

Jeni joins the WMBA office with Grant Richter (Executive Director) and Dana Angelopoulos (Program Coordinator).

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association has announced that it has released the first week of the 2025-26 season schedules for its Community Club based programs.  Ages 7-13 will begin this Saturday with ages 13-17 starting Sunday (note 13 boys will play on Saturdays and 13-14 girls will play on Sundays).   The remaining league schedules will come out once week 1 has passed.

The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) is actively seeking volunteer coaches for the upcoming season. Opportunities are available city-wide and across all age groups.

We Need Your Help!

The WMBA depends on the support of dedicated volunteers. In recent seasons, several teams had to fold due to a lack of volunteer coaches, leaving over 100 children without the chance to participate in the sport they love.

Every child deserves the opportunity to play, and we are committed to making that happen. We are looking for coaches across all areas and age groups to ensure no child is left on the sidelines.

No Experience Necessary

You don’t need to be an expert to coach. The WMBA, in partnership with Basketball Manitoba, provides a wealth of resources to help you get started. All volunteer coaches will have full access to a comprehensive range of educational tools designed to prepare you for success. Ultimately, it’s about creating a fun and supportive environment for the kids.
