VIEW EVENT PHOTOS: The 11th annual Hoops From The Heart event in support of inner city kids went off on Wednesday night without a problem as 150 inner city kids and their supervisors cheered for some outstanding men’s and women’s basketball games at the Duckworth Centre at the University of Winnipeg.

Before the games, the kids also enjoyed a meal of pizza (provided generously by Boston Pizza) and butter chicken (generously provided by Clay Oven) with juice boxes and plenty of other goodies accompanying (generously provided by Pratt’s Foods). Yum yum!! They also were styling in this year’s Hoops From the Heart collector T-shirt and took home their very own basketball signed by one of the players!

Two exciting basketball games, some very happy inner city kids and plenty of media coverage during the games from CBC and we can safely conclude another highly successful event! Eleven years of Hoops From The Heart is a long time and its long-lasting success is entirely a result of the generous sponsorship provided each year by the compassionate individuals and companies listed below. THANK YOU!!!

Congratulations to Brian Penner who was the winner of the autographed Steve Nash Phoenix Suns jersey!

An endowed Scholarship at the University of Winnipeg and another at the University of Manitoba are now permanent legacies of all of our partners and supporters to allow inner-city youth to attend each University and play basketball there in the future. We have much for which to be proud - a tremendous community of support here in Winnipeg! THANK YOU AGAIN!

The 11th annual Hoops from the Heart basketball games are being held on Wednesday, May 29th in support of inner-city kids.  Do you want to have fun, save lives and help inner city kids?

By Dr. Grant Pierce, Event Organizer

A decade is a long time and yet it can go by so fast! Hoops From The Heart just celebrated its 10th annual event on Wednesday evening August 8th with another great crowd of inner city kids in attendance. About 150 inner city children hooped and hollered for their favourite players during an evening of fun, food and basketball. The kids were treated to some great Boston Pizza (and entertained by their mascot too), tasty butter chicken from Clay Oven and more treats from Pratt’s Foods. These generous sponsors filled the tummies of all of the kids and sent them on to watch some of the best basketball players in Manitoba.

The 10th Annual Hoops From The Heart games are being held on the evening of Wednesday August 8 in support of inner city kids.  Do you want to have fun, save lives and help inner city kids?

Could you do anything better?!

Hoops From The Heart is an annual event (now into its 10th year) where the best men’s and women’s basketball players in Manitoba play two games at the University of Winnipeg's Duckworth Centre. In the process, 150 inner city kids are there to watch the games, receive a free meal, get their own Hoops From The Heart T shirt and take a basketball home signed by one of the players. The proceeds of the games have also helped to create a Scholarship specifically for an inner city youth to go to either the University of Manitoba or the University of Winnipeg to play basketball. Watch great basketball and help Winnipeg’s inner city kids. Part of the proceeds also helps heart research at St Boniface Hospital. Help fight heart disease, the #1 cause of death in Manitoba today and show your support for the present and future basketball stars of Manitoba.

Come on out to the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre on Wednesday, August 8th. It’s all for a great cause!

Congratulations to Dr Grant Pierce who was inducted into the Order of Manitoba this week for his research in cardiovascular medicine!  Dr. Pierce is the founder of the Hoops from the Heart basketball event that is celebrating its 10th year on Aug 8 at the Duckworth Centre.

The province’s highest honour, the Order of Manitoba recognizes Manitobans who have enriched the social, cultural or economic well-being of the province.

Dr. Pierce’s research in cardiovascular medicine has brought scientific acclaim to Manitoba through his participation in a series of studies to stop or reverse heart muscle disease or blood vessel wall injury. He helped develop the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and helped found the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine, both at St. Boniface Hospital.

The 9th Annual Hoops From The Heart event has come to a close and what a night it was! Over 150 inner city kids attended and were treated to a sumptuous meal generously provided by Clay Oven and Pratt’s Foods, an official Hoops T shirt and a basketball autographed by some of the best basketball players in Manitoba. The fans were also treated to one of our most exciting games, a 104 to 103 overtime victory by the Manitoba All Star team over the combined U of M / U of W team. The exciting climax of the game came with the University team calling timeout with seconds to go and a decision to make on whether to go for a tie or the win. A few excited inner city kids decided to provide their own advice and ran into the team huddle with the players and coaches to yell “Go for it!!”  This year’s crowd was the most engaged and animated we have seen yet with lots of cheering and hollering approval for every dunk and three pointer. We had 150 inner city kids leaving last night with big smiles, bouncing balls and autographed T shirts galore. The below photos say everything.

Hoops From The Heart 2016 is now history and another resounding success. One hundred and fifty inner city kids attended two great games with the best male and female basketball players entertaining the crowd all evening! The kids were fed, received a 2016 Hoops From The Heart T-shirt and a basketball signed by one of the players. Two Scholarships (one at the University of Winnipeg and one at the University of Manitoba) will now be available for inner city kids to attend these schools and play basketball there. This all occurred due to the dedicated work of the following:

The 7th Annual Hoops From The Heart Basketball games were played on Wednesday May 20th at the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Centre, and once again a combined University of Manitoba / University of Winnipeg men’s team took on an All Star Veterans Team of some of the best players from Manitoba! This exciting game was followed by a traditional women’s game featuring the University of Manitoba facing off against the University of Winnipeg.

“Thanks once again to the great sponsors, dedicated volunteers, enthusiastic athletes and generous referees this year who helped us make this a reality with their contributions”, said Dr Grant Pierce. “The real winners were the inner city kids who not only enjoyed the evening but will wear their Hoops T shirt proudly and enjoy the basketballs for a long time into the future as well!”

Proceeds from Hoops From the Heart benefit the Basketballs for Inner City Kids project and cardiac research at St. Boniface Hospital. It is hoped to raise additional money that will be used for an University Scholarship to help an inner city kid play basketball at the U of W and U of M for their men’s or women’s teams. An official Phoenix Suns jersey signed by future Hall of Famer Steve Nash (valued at over $500) was donated in support of this cause. A recap of this year’s event can be seen in the video below. The Hoops From The Heart event staged on Wednesday August 12 at the
IGAC was a resounding success. About 500 people took in the event and
most importantly, the players were fully engaged and each expressed
their enthusiastic support for this event and how much they enjoyed the
games. Both games were hard fought and close and that made it even more
enjoyable. The first game won by U of W went down to the last 2 seconds
and even had a buzzer beating desperation shot that didn't go in but
kept everyone on the edge of their seats. The U of M won by a slim
margin as well.  Thanks to everyone who came out to support a good cause!  Check out a collection of pictures taken from the evening...

The St. Boniface Hospital & Research Foundation in partnership with the University of Manitoba are hosting a special evening of basketball on Wednesday August 12 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre to raise awareness and funds for two special causes.  All proceeds from the event will go to heart research at St. Boniface Hospital and to the Basketballs for Inner City Kids Project, which distributes new basketballs to children in Winnipeg's inner city.  The event will feature two basketball games at the IGAC with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen taking on an All-Star team comprised of active University and College players from Western Canada at 6:30 with the University of Manitoba Bisons playing at 8:15 pm.  Get out and support a great cause and catch some great summer hoops!  For details...
