The dynamic guard with the Wesmen women's basketball team was named a first-team all-Canadian Wednesday night at the national championship tournament in Cape Breton. 

Giles, a fifth-year guard, was named a first-team all-Canada West for the third time in her career last week, marking the fifth time in her five seasons of play she earned a conference all-star award.

It was the third all-Canadian honour for Giles and her second first-team award.

Giles was a second-team all-conference last season with the Wesmen, and had three all-star seasons with the Regina Cougars prior to her transferring home in 2020. 

In 2022-23, Giles was statistically spectacular before an injury ended her season in a win at Manitoba on Feb. 2. 

She averaged a career-high 21.9 points per game, which led the nation prior to her injury, and posted the second-best rebounds-per-game mark of her career at 8.6 per contest. She also averaged 5.5 assists and 2.7 steals per game. 

Giles reconfigured the Wesmen record books, as well. She scored more than 40 points in two conference games — and three overall — and scored at least 30 in four conference games. 

In a win over Fraser Valley in February, Giles set a Wesmen Canada West-era record with 46 points, a total that ranks third in Wesmen program history. She also scored 43 in a win at Brandon in December, giving her two of the top five highest scoring games in the program's history.

For the second time this season, Kyanna Giles performance has earned her the National USPORTS and Canada West Conference’s weekly honour as the tops in women's basketball.  Giles, a fifth-year guard with the Winnipeg Wesmen women's basketball team, was named the conference's women's basketball player of the week for her record-breaking effort. 

Friday night in a win over the Fraser Valley Cascades, Giles set a Wesmen Canada West-era record with 46 points on 48 per cent shooting. She was 14-for-29 from the field, made two of six from three and also set career-highs for free throw attempts and makes with 17 and 16.  She added nine rebounds and three steals. 

Giles' 46 ranks third all-time in Wesmen history behind Sandra Carroll's 51 against Regina in 1994 and Beth Cochran's 48 in 1983, both of those coming in the GPAC era. 

She scored 14 in the first quarter, 10 in the second quarter, 10 in the third and 12 in the fourth, including a key three with 2:15 remaining that put the Wesmen up 83-79.

On Saturday, Giles scored 16 points — 14 coming in the second half — as the Wesmen surged late to earn the weekend sweep.

Giles also earned the conference's weekly award in December after becoming the first Wesmen player in history to score at least 40 points and grab at least 10 rebounds.

Two Winnipeg Wesmen have been honoured with Canada West women's basketball major awards announced on Wednesday.

For the second time in two seasons, Keylyn Filewich has been named the conference's Player of the Year, repeating the feat she achieved in 2019-20, the last time the conference had games.

Tanya McKay is bringing one of the country's most talented basketball players back home to play for Winnipeg.

McKay, the head coach of the UWinnipeg Wesmen women's team, has officially gained the commitment of all-Canadian guard, and Winnipeg native, Kyanna Giles, who will suit up for the Wesmen in 2020-21 after transferring from the University of Regina.

Giles, after satisfying the U Sports rule requiring transferring student-athletes to sit out a year of competition, will have two years of eligibility remaining. At UWinnipeg she will pursue her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees.

While Giles won't be eligible until 2020, she is the third recruit to be announced this off-season, joining Sturgeon Heights' Anna Kernaghan and Srishti Suren of Chennai, India.

Giles said her education was a top priority and UWinnipeg provided the right balance for transferring her academic credits over. But she's also taken notice of the roster that McKay has assembled and is excited for the chance to jump in and contribute.

"There's good players, it's a young team that works really hard," she said. "When we played against (Winnipeg) I could see they were hungry and ready to go and I feel like me coming in – I've been to three nationals, I've been to three Canada West finals, I've won a Canada West final – I know what we need to do, I know what it takes to get there, so I'm happy to help out."

Giles is a three-time national award-winner, being named first-team all-Canadian last season, second-team all-Canadian as a sophomore and a national all-rookie selection in 2016-17.

She appeared in 58 Canada West conference games with the Cougars and started 57 of them. Giles came off the bench in the third game of her university career and started every game she appeared in after that.

At Regina, Giles averaged 16.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game over three seasons, including career-bests of 18.4 points and 8.8 rebounds last season when she led the team in both categories.

"She is a U Sports all-Canadian athlete for a reason, and it's not by accident," McKay said. "It's from hard work and the type of athlete she is I expect she's going to bring that and more."

McKay's connection to Giles dates back to when the former coached Giles on the U17 provincial team that won the national championship in 2014.

"Living on Kennedy (Street), (U)Winnipeg is the back yard for me," Giles said. "Tanya has coached me … so I'm familiar with her, I'm familiar with the facilities, so coming here was my No. 1 option. It was a good fit."

Giles said she's already set goals for her and her new team.

"I have my own individual goals, but I also have goals for this program and I want to get them to a Canada West championship, I want to get them to a nationals," she said.

Giles suffered a knee injury during Regina's Canada West championship loss to Saskatchewan in March, but McKay has no concerns over what kind of player she'll be when healthy again.

"I think she's going to come through the injury just fine," McKay said. "She's motivated to train, she's motivated to be even better than she was – and she's pretty good. Kyanna's just that type of kid who, when she makes up her mind, she's going to make it happen."

Manitoba basketball players Kyanna Giles (1st Team) and Keylyn Filewich (2nd Team) were both named All-Canadians at the annual U SPORTS All-Canadian Gala on Wednesday night.

Giles enjoyed a spectacular third season with the Cougars, averaging a team-high 18.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. The Winnipeg product also finished second in the conference with 2.6 steals per game while leading the Cougars to a conference-best 17-3 regular season record.

"It means a lot to be recognized, obviously. My hard work is paying off and it shows that I'm getting better and better each year," Giles said on Wednesday. "My points and rebounds have gone up from my first to my third year but I really feel like my overall game has gotten so much better. It's nice to be named an All-Canadian and getting the recognition makes me work harder and strive to get even better."

Filewich had an outstanding season finishing fourth in Canada West conference points (369), third in blocks (22), first in offensive rebounds (86), and tops in shooting percentage at 60.3%. This is Filewich's second appearance as an all-star after being named to the conference's all-rookie team in 2016-17.

Both players were honoured last month along with Wesmen Faith Hezekiah by Canada West all being named as First Team All-Stars.

Both players had outstanding basketball careers while in Manitoba at Sisler (Giles) and Vincent Massey (Filewich) and were members of the Manitoba Provincial Team program and both have attended a number of National Team identification camps.

VICTORIA - Winnipeg's Antoinette Miller and Regina's Kyanna Giles (of Winnipeg) claimed national women's basketball awards Wednesday night in Victoria ahead of the U SPORTS Final 8, as Miller was named the U SPORTS Defensive Player of the Year, while Giles earned the Kathy Shields Award as the nation's top rookie.

Miller, who was also up for the Nan Copp Award as national player of the year, had an outstanding season for the Winnipeg Wesmen, who went 18-2 during the Canada West regular season, before finishing fourth during the conference playoffs.

The Phoenix, Arizona native was a threat at both ends of the floor, leading the conference in scoring with 18.7 PPG, while also finishing first in assists (76), third in steals (72), and sixth in defensive rebounds (118). She is the first Winnipeg player to claim a national award in women's basketball since JoAnne Wells was named national player of the year back in 2005.

Giles, who became the first Cougars rookie since 1996 to be named an all-star, averaged 12.9 points per game and was also the team's leading rebounder with 7.3 boards per contest. She was also one of the conference's best from three-point range, hitting 21 triples and shooting over 41% from downtown.

The last Regina rookie to be named a conference all-star was Andrea Gottselig, who was the only Cougar to be named the national rookie of the year prior to Giles.

Also announced Wednesday on the eve of this week's U SPORTS Final 8 tournament in Victoria were the U SPORTS All-Canadian and All-Rookie Teams.

Three Canada West players were named All-Canadians, as Miller (first), Saskatchewan's Sabine Dukate (second), and UBC's Maddison Penn (second) cracked the teams. Giles, and Saskatchewan's Libby Epoch were the conference's representatives on the All-Rookie Team.

The national tournament opens Thursday, March 9 with the quarter-finals, as Saskatchewan takes on Laval (2 p.m. PT), Regina plays McGill (6 p.m. PT), and the host Victoria Vikes welcome Carleton (8 p.m. PT).

DEFENSIVE Player of the Year: Antoinette Miller, Winnipeg

Antoinette Miller of the University of Winnipeg Wesmen is the 2016-17 recipient of the U SPORTS Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Year.

The 5-foot-6, fourth-year guard from Phoenix, Arizona finished among the league leaders in both offensive and defensive categories during the 2016-2017 Canada West regular season. Her relentless play at both ends of the court played a vital role in helping the Wesmen finish with an 18-2 regular season record and a first-place finish in the Canada West Women's Basketball conference standings. She finished regular season play with 72 steals (third in the country) and was instrumental in Winnipeg's suffocating defensive play that allowed 60.7 points per game, while holding the opponents to 37.6 per cent shooting from the field.  Miller was also a force on the offensive side of the ball, finishing the season fourth in the nation averaging 18.7 points per game and first in Canada West assists with 76. 

"We are very proud at the University of Winnipeg that Antoinette was recognized as the U SPORTS Defensive Player of the Year," said Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay. "Antoinette is a tremendous competitor, rebounder and defender who is very deserving of this award. Antoinette plays the game with a tremendous amount of passion and heart and this has helped elevate the play of her teammates all year."

The other nominees were guard Danielle Boiago of McMaster, centres Alex Kiss-Rusk of McGill, and Katelyn Mangold of UNB.

KATHY SHIELDS AWARD (Rookie of the Year): Kyanna Giles, Regina 

Kyanna Giles earns U SPORTS Rookie of the Year recognition after turning in a sensational season for a University of Regina team that will head into this weekend's national championship as the No. 5 seed with a 32-4 overall record.

Giles finished second on the Cougars in scoring with an average of 12.9 points per game and also had a team-leading average of 7.3 rebounds per game while leading Regina in steals during the Canada West schedule. She eclipsed the 20-point barrier on three occasions in conference play, including a season-high 25 points in a win at Brandon. 

Also named a Canada West third-team all-star this season, Giles joins Andrea Gottselig (1996) as the only players in U of R history to earn the Kathy Shields Award as the U SPORTS Rookie of the Year. Giles, who's enrolled in the Faculty of Arts, starred for Sisler High School in Winnipeg before coming to the University of Regina. She was named the top high school player in Manitoba by the Winnipeg Sun in 2014, 2015, and 2016. 

 "It's rare for a rookie to be able to start and be one of the leading scorers and leading rebounder for a team that's been top four in the country all year," Regina head coach Dave Taylor. "That shows what a special talent she is. We make her guard four different positions on the floor, and she's had a bigger impact than any rookie we've ever had in my 11 years here. 

The other nominees were guards Jenna Mae Ellsworth of UPEI, Kayah Clarke of Windsor, and Caroline Task of Concordia.

First year Regina player and Winnipegger Kyanna Giles (above) has been named the Canada West Rookie of the Year!  As part of the Canada West major awards, Paige Thompson of Brandon, Manitoba, who currently suits up for the University of Victoria has been named the recipient of the Tracy McLeod Award.

She was also one of the conference's best from three-point range, hitting 21 triples and shooting over 41% from downtown. Giles was also the first Cougar rookie to earn conference all-star recognition since 1996, as she was named a conference third team all-star.

Giles now moves forward as the Canada West nominee for the Kathy Shields Award as U SPORTS rookie of the year.

She not only led our team in rebounding and was our second leading scorer, but we also asked her to guard multiple positions and she was able to do that effectively. Paige Thomson (right) has worked harder than most to achieve her basketball goals, as the third-year forward suffers from a heart condition known as supraventricular tachycardia – a condition that causes abnormal heart rhythm. Thomson battles through unpredictable episodes with heavy heart palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, and faintness among other symptoms. Over the last 12 months alone, Thomson has undergone two surgeries related to the condition, but has kept positive in her pursuit of both her athletic and academic goals.

Along with her heart condition, Thomson is dyslexic, and has worked extremely hard in her academic pursuits. The Fine Arts student achieved a B average the last academic session and is a shining example of what hard work and a positive attitude can achieve.

Thomson moves forward as the conference nominee for the U SPORTS Tracy MacLeod Award.

"Paige is unbelievably determined and strong. She has never complained about the hand she's been dealt, but instead uses it as fuel and motivation to keep working hard to achieve her goals. It would have been very easy for Paige to step away from basketball after two heart procedures, but instead her passion to play has only grown stronger." – Victoria head coach Dani Sinclair.

Manitobans Kyanna Giles (pictured above) and Keylyn Filewich (left) have both been recognized by the Canada West on an outstanding rookie season with the Regina Cougars and UBC Thunderbirds respectively.  Both have been named to the All-Rookie Team plus Kyanna has been named a Third Team All-Star.

Kyanna was named the Manitoba Player of the Year in 2016 after an outstanding final high school season at Sisler and suited up for the Cougars along with her twin sister Kyia this past season.  Keylyn was named an All-Manitoban in her grade 12 year at Vincent Massey in 2016 and headed out west to join the Thunderbirds.

Both were long time members of the Manitoba Provincial Team program, including as members of the 2014 National Championship team that brought a Gold Medal home for the first time since 1991 and have been to a number of National Team Identification Camps.

Sisler Spartan and members of the Manitoba Provincial Team program, Kyia and Kyanna Giles (pictured left to right above) have announced that they will both be attending the University of Regina and suiting up for the Cougars Women's Basketball Team for the 2016-17 CIS season.  The announcement was made earlier today at Sisler High School.  The sisters have been with the Manitoba Provincial Team for 5 years and helped bring Manitoba its first National Championship in 2014.

Winnipeg athlete and member of the Manitoba Provincial Team program Kyanna Giles has been invited by Canada Basketball to Edmonton this month to a National Team Identification Camp for players born in 1996 or later.  Her identification comes from an outstanding performance at the Canada Games last summer.  Canada Basketball will run a national U17 and U18 age-group assessment camp from March 23rd-March 30th, 2014. The camp will be held at the Saville Centre in Edmonton, Alberta for female athletes selected through the national identification process. Twenty-seven athletes born in 1996 or later have been invited to take part in the camp.

This camp, combined with previous and upcoming talent identification efforts, will contribute to the assessment of the overall athlete pool and will help determine the athletes that will be invited back for each of the U17 and U18 women's summer national team program tryouts.

Both U17 and U18 national teams will be competing in FIBA sanctioned championship tournaments this coming summer. The U17 team will be competing in their third consecutive FIBA U17 World Championship for Women, held in Slovakia from June 28th-July 6th. The team qualified after finishing second at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women in Cancun, Mexico this past summer. The tournament includes 16 teams from each of the five zones with players born in 1997 or later. The U18 squad will participate in the U18 FIBA Americas Championship for Women, held in Colorado Springs, Colorado from August 6th-August 10th. The tournament includes teams from eight countries in the Americas zone with players born in 1996 or later.

“We are looking forward to building on the work done in our technical summit and December age-group camp, as we strive for full harmonization and focus on developing winners for the top senior level of our women’s national team program,” said Denise Dignard, Director of Women’s High Performance. “Tremendous growth is achieved on and off the court by our athletes when training against the best in their age-group. During these camps, they also learn valuable lessons on what it takes to be an elite athlete and what they must do in their daily training environment.”
The coaches leading this combined age-group camp will consist of both the 2014 U17 and U18 national team coaches, who will be integrating the Canadian style of play into the age group programs.
Carly Clarke (Halifax, NS) will once again be tasked with fulfilling the role of the U17 team head coach. "We are very much looking forward to our March assessment camp. It is great to have a look midway at the progress we have made since December, as well as provide direction for the upcoming World Championships - especially now that we have our draw,” said Clarke.

Joining Clarke for the fourth consecutive season will be assistant coach Andre Desjardins (Ottawa, ON)
from École secondaire publique Louis-Riel and Jodi Gram (Markham, ON) from Bill Crothers Secondary School, who also returns to the team as an assistant coach and performance analyst.

Rounding out the U17 staff will be Carleton University’s head coach Taffe Charles (Ottawa, ON) who will be making his second international coaching appearance. They will be joined by Performance Analyst Megan Wiggins (Regina, SK) who brings valuable expertise in advanced statistical analysis to the staff.

Rich Chambers (Port Moody, BC) returninsonce again at the helm of the U18 team. “I’m super excited to get together with both U17 and U18 aged athletes who are getting ready for the upcoming World Championship and world qualifying tournaments. We had a great start in December and we’re looking to build upon that experience and get everyone in a position to play their best basketball this summer,” Chambers commented.

Chambers will be joined by assistants Scott Edwards (Edmonton, AB) and Scott Reeves (Kamloops, BC). Edwards, who serves as the head coach of the University of Alberta, will be taking part in his fourth stint with the program. Reeves currently serves as head coach of Thompson Rivers University, and will be making his second appearance as a coach with the women’s national team program.

Canada Basketball has announced a national age-group assessment camp that will be held at Humber College, North Campus from December 16 - 20, 2013 for a group of invited female athletes identified through the national identification process. Manitoba athletes and coaches who have been invited and identified through the Manitoba Provincial Team Program include Kyanna Giles, Jasmine Ibrahim and Keylyn Filewich.  Joining the 3 athletes will be Bison Women's Coach Michele Hynes who is getting more and more involved as a coach at the national level.  Thirty-nine young female athletes from across the country have been invited to take part in the camp, which includes on and off-court sessions.

This assessment camp, combined with previous and upcoming identification work, will contribute to the assessment of the overall athlete pool and in determining those athletes to be chosen for each of the U17 and U18 women's summer national team program’s tryouts by invitation. Both U17 and U18 national teams will be competing in FIBA sanctioned championship tournaments this coming summer.

The coaches who will provide on-court leadership at the camp will include junior (U18) women’s national team head coach Rich Chambers, cadette (U16) women’s national team head coach Carly Clarke, cadette women’s national team assistant coaches Andre Desjardins and Taffe Charles, and cadette women’s national team performance analyst Jodi Gram. Additional women’s national team program coaches who will be working with the athletes are Michele Belanger, Agnes Borg, Scott Edwards, Scott Reeves, Dani Sinclair and Jeff Speedy. Senior women’s national team head coach Lisa Thomaidis and development women’s national team head coach Fabian McKenzie will also be present at the camp for technical guidance and leadership. In addition, senior performance analyst Dipesh Mistry and women’s national team statistics consultant, Hasan Alanam, will be overseeing the training and professional development of performance analysts Jodi Gram, Michele Hynes and Megan Wiggins.

“We are excited to hold this camp to provide athletes with exposure to our Canadian Style of Play and give them an opportunity to apply this knowledge towards the goal of becoming a world-class athlete in international basketball,” said Denise Dignard, Director of Women’s High Performance. “After holding our women’s high performance technical summit last week, we are looking forward to having some of our pool of world-class national coaches working with these young athletes to integrate the Canadian Style of Play. This will help achieve full harmonization for the long-term development of podium athletes for the senior national team program.”


Dignard went on to say, “Our performance analysts are a very important addition to our national team staff as they will contribute much more in-depth information to accelerate the learning of our athletes.”

The junior (U18) women’s national team will compete at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women in Colorado Springs, CO from August 6 – 10, 2014. The tournament features teams representing eight countries from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean, with players born in 1996 or later.

The 2013 cadette women’s national team will attend the FIBA U17 World Championships for women, which will be held in Slovakia from June 28 – July 6, 2014. The team qualified after finishing second at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Cancun, Mexico this past summer.

TORONTO - Canada Basketball has announced a national age-group assessment camp that will be held at Humber College, North Campus, for a group of invited female athletes identified through the national identification process. Athletes invited from Manitoba include current National Team Member Emily Potter and first time invite Kyanna Giles.  Both athletes are members of the Manitoba Provincial Team Program.  The camp runs from December 18 – 22.  Arriving from coast to coast, 43 young female athletes have been invited to take part in the camp, which includes on and off-court sessions and will focus on teaching athletes how to train at a world class level.
