This program comes as an extension of the visits that professional basketball players Emily PotterKeith Omoerah and AJ Basi have made with Basketball Manitoba since December 2018.

Kyanna is one of the most successful basketball players to come out of Manitoba and she is now able to get involved with Basketball Manitoba with this new in-school opportunity for schools to take advantage of at NO COST TO THE SCHOOL.



ABOUT KYANNA GILES

Kyanna began her basketball career in grade 6 at Sargent Park School in Winnipeg.  From there, she had a successful 3 years at Sisler High School where she was named a record 3-time AAAA Girls Manitoba Player of the Year in 2014, 2015 and 2016.  Over this time, Kyanna was a member of the Canada Basketball Centre for Performance Program in Manitoba and a member of the Manitoba Provincial Team Program.  She helped lead Manitoba to its first female 17U National Championship in 2014 for the first time in 25 years.  Catching the attention of post-secondary schools from across North America, Kyanna went on to play 3 years with the University of Regina.  She was named the USPORTS National Rookie of the Year in 2016.  In 2018, she was named to the USPORTS All-Canadian Team, recognizing her as one of the top players in Canada.  She has suited up for Team Canada a number of times representing our country at internal basketball events.

She has since returned home to Winnipeg to rehab an injury and while here has partnered with Basketball Manitoba to reach out to area schools to grow the development and awareness of the sport of basketball.  She will be suiting up for the University of Winnipeg for the 2020-21 season.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW 


WHO: U of W women's basketball player, Kyanna Giles.

WHAT: A basketball outreach program to support the physical education staff at Winnipeg area elementary or middle schools.
WHEN: Opportunities are open during regular school hours from October 8, 2019, until December 12, 2019.  Future times may open beyond this initial opportunity.
WHERE: Any Winnipeg based elementary or middle school (K-8)
WHY: To support an area school with a unique opportunity to have one of Manitoba's most successful basketball players visit your school to promote the sport of basketball on the court and motivate students to stay healthy and active!



PROGRAM DETAILS


  • Kyanna will help lead the physical education classes for the day (or set amount of time) at the school and will include her leading the students through an introductory experience with basketball including different age-appropriate skills and drills.  
  • The time will include some stories on her journey through the sport and how basketball has taken her around the world.
  • The school will need to provide access to the gymnasium space with at least 2 basketball hoops and ideally have available 1 basketball per student.  Kyanna will come with any other training aids to support her time in the gym with the students.  
  • Someone at the school is asked to briefly introduce Kyanna to the students before she proceeds with her agenda. A brief script will also be provided.    
  • There is NO COST to the school or others for Kyanna to be present during school hours.  
  • Kyanna will be able to attend a set number of schools as a special guest as part of the physical education class during normal school hours and will be scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis.    
  • Kyanna has completed both a Canadian Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry check and proof of completion can be provided upon request to the school.

IMPORTANT: Before requesting a time for Kyanna to visit your school, please review the request chart displayed below to see what days are available for request.  Open times are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from October 8, 2019, to December 12, 2019, during 11:00 AM - 3:30 PM with the exception of October 15, October 17, and November 14.  The information below is sorted by date.

Interested schools can complete the form below to submit a request to Basketball Manitoba.  Only requests directly from a school will be fulfilled.  If you are a parent or student that would like a visit to occur at your school, please speak to your physical education teacher about requesting this for the school.
