Winnipeg basketball standout Emmanuel Akot is continuing his professional career in Mexico after signing with El Calor de Cancún for the 2026 Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP) season.

The Cancún-based club announced the addition of the six-foot-eight Canadian forward as it continues to strengthen its roster with talent, intensity and experience. Akot joins El Calor following the 2026 Canadian Elite Basketball League season with his hometown Winnipeg Sea Bears.

Akot has built a growing professional résumé with stops in Canada, the Netherlands and Poland. Before joining the professional ranks, he played 134 NCAA Division I games over five collegiate seasons with the University of Arizona, Boise State University and Western Kentucky University. He averaged 7.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists during his college career and earned Mountain West Honourable Mention recognition while at Boise State.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Akot played locally for Valley Gardens Middle School, Kildonan East Collegiate and the Winnipeg Wolves Basketball Club before completing his high school career at Wasatch Academy in Utah. He was regarded as a five-star recruit and participated in the 2016 BioSteel All-Canadian Game.

Akot also represented Canada at the 2016 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup, where he averaged 9.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

The move to Cancún marks the next international chapter for the versatile Manitoba product, who will bring size, playmaking ability and experience to El Calor as the club competes in Mexico’s top professional basketball league.

The Leicester Riders have announced the signing of Manitoba's Emmanuel Akot for the 2025-26 season.

Akot, a 6’8” forward from Winnipeg, joins the Riders after a strong summer with the Canadian Elite Basketball League’s Winnipeg Sea Bears. In his second season with the club, Akot averaged 11.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, helping Winnipeg advance to the Western Conference Finals.

Akot’s professional career began in the Netherlands with Heroes Den Bosch, competing in the BNXT League and FIBA Europe Cup, where he averaged 8.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game across 16 appearances. This summer, Akot represented the South Sudan senior men’s national team at the 2025 Afrobasket competition, marking his first call-up at the senior level after previously competing at the U17 stage.

Before turning professional, Akot played two seasons at the University of Arizona, before transferring to Boise State where he posted 10 points and 3.8 rebounds per game across two years. He completed his collegiate career at Western Kentucky.

Upon signing with the Riders, Akot commented:

“I’m super excited to be here in Leicester. I’ve had some friends play here and they had nothing but good things to say about their time in Leicester. I can’t wait to play in front of the Riders fans and have a great season with the team.”

Riders Head Coach Rob Paternostro praised the signing:

“Emmanuel brings a unique combination of length, skill, and athleticism. He’s a versatile player who can shoot the three, handle the ball, pass, and create for his teammates, while also giving us the ability to defend multiple positions. His all-around game will be a valuable asset to our team.”

The Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) have retained the first right to negotiate with eight members of their 2025 team for the 2026 season.

The Winnipeg Sea Bears have re-signed forward Emmanuel Akot for the 2025 season, bringing back a key contributor from last year’s squad as a protected player.

The Winnipeg-born Akot made an immediate impact in the 2024 season, averaging 11.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists over 12 games. He proved to be an efficient and versatile offensive threat, shooting 62.9 per cent from the field and 42.1 per cent from three-point range. He also delivered in clutch moments, securing two Target Score game-winners during the season.

Following his time with the Sea Bears, Akot signed with KK Wloclawek in Poland’s top league. However, his season was cut short due to a foot injury, which required him to return to Winnipeg for surgery and rehabilitation. Since then, he has spent the offseason training with the Sea Bears’ athletic therapy staff, focusing on recovery and preparation for the upcoming season.

"We’re thrilled to have Emmanuel back with the Sea Bears," said Head Coach and General Manager, Mike Taylor "He’s a talented and dynamic player who made a real impact last season. His commitment to rehab and training has been impressive, and we’re excited to see him take another step forward in 2025."

Akot, a former standout at Western Kentucky, Boise State and Arizona, brings high-level experience and versatility to the roster. With professional experience in Canada, Poland and the Netherlands, he adds a valuable veteran presence as the Sea Bears prepare for another competitive season.

"I’m excited to be back with the Sea Bears and to play in front of my hometown fans again," said Akot. "Last season was an incredible experience, and I’m grateful for the support I received from the organization throughout my rehab. I can’t wait to get back on the court and help this team compete for a championship."

With Akot’s return, the Sea Bears look to build a strong and competitive roster heading into 2025. The team looks forward to welcoming him back to the floor and seeing him make an impact once again.

Winnipeg is set to host Championship Weekend from August 21 to 24, bringing the league’s top teams to town for Canada’s biggest basketball celebration. Tournament packs will be available soon.

SALT LAKE CITY — You can tell a lot about a person by what they eat.  Maybe not in the case of Wasatch Academy standout Emmanuel Akot, though.  The 6-foot-7-inch, 190-pound junior has a unique obsession — gummy bears.

“He loves gummy bears,” teammate Damion Squire said. “You could feed him gummy bears for the whole week, and he’d be fine.”

Apparently, it works. The junior, who hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba, averaged 16.5 points, 1.01 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game while leading the Tigers to a 23-5 record with back-to-back trips to the prestigious Dick’s Sporting Goods High School Nationals tournament this spring.

With one more season left to play, the Arizona commit has been named KSL’s Game Night Live boys basketball player of the year.

But about those gummy bears.

“That’s his favorite breakfast. That’s the breakfast of champions,” Wasatch Academy coach Curtis Condie said. “I’m sure future Pac-12 opponents’ student sections will have something to say about that.”

If it works, it works. And for Akot, his game does more talking than his interesting eating habits. A five-star recruit by Scout.com, Akot was the No. 1-rated prospect in Utah, the No. 1 wing in the West and 15th-best recruit overall by the recruiting service.

He also does things that few 17-year-olds can do. Averaging 16.5 points per game, Akot prides himself as much as a passer — setting up his teammates while also averaging a team-high 1.62 3-pointers per game.

“There’s no one person I try to model my game after; I try to just take little pieces from everybody,” Akot said. “I really like to score, but also rebound the ball, pass the ball and do everything. I play 1-3, and 1-4 if I need to.”

In addition to Arizona, Akot was recruited by North Carolina State, Oregon, Utah, Utah State and Virginia Tech, among others, primarily as a small forward. While he played mostly on the wing, he also spent time backing up Squire at point guard.

Akot believes he can play any position from point guard to power forward. And his coach believes it, primarily because of his defense.

“When he wants to, he is really good at defense; just like any other teenager,” Condie said. “He’s long, he’s athletic, he’s smart, and he plays hard.”

Off the court, Akot is just as impressive. The Canadian international played in the FIBA U-17 World Championships, but still takes time to smile at every other student at the Mt. Pleasant-based boarding school and takes on all challengers in chess (he’s undefeated against all but one Wasatch Academy student, by the way).

“He’s just a good guy. There are no problems with him, and we get along,” said Squire, Akot’s roommate for the past two years. “He doesn’t have any problems with anyone. Everyone likes him, and everyone gets along with him.”

The Tigers don’t play for region or state titles; as an independent affiliate of the Utah High School Activities Association, Wasatch Academy plays a national schedule. The Tigers’ other sports compete in Class 2A, and they beat 2A state champion Layton Christian 65-52 in February. They also own wins over top-rated teams like Lone Peak (71-58), Jordan (101-44) and Timpview (97-76).

The No. 16 team in the nation in the USA Today Super 25 only lost to Winward (California), Findlay Prep (Nevada), IMG Academy (Florida) and Chino (California) before a first-round loss to second-ranked La Lumiere (Indiana) at Dick’s Nationals.

But Akot wants to be even better. After all, he’s headed to a top-class Pac-12 school and has designs on the NBA.

“I just want to come back a better player next year,” Akot said.

There’s a new face of basketball in Manitoba, and his name is Emmanuel Akot.

On March 8, Akot announced his commitment to the University of Arizona Wildcats. He’ll be joining the team in 2019.

“I’m going to Arizona and I picked them because when I went there, it was a family atmosphere,” said Akot in an interview with Scout.com.

Arizona is one of the most highly respected basketball programs in the NCAA. They were ranked fourth in the nation heading into this year’s March Madness tournament. Currently, there are 12 Wildcat alumni playing in the NBA—like Aaron Gordon, Andre Iguodala, and Jason Terry.

“They put players in the NBA and that’s where I want to go and that’s why I’m picking Arizona,” said Akot to Scout. com. The small forward is listed as 6’8’’ and 195 pounds.

Akot, 18, will become the fourth Manitoban male to play NCAA Division I basketball. Todd MacCulloch, the only Manitoban to ever play in the NBA, played for the Washington Huskies from 1995-1999. Dan Becker played for the Colorado Buffaloes from 1986-1989 before playing professionally overseas. Cam Hornby was the last Manitoban to play Division I hoops—he played briefly for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in 2006.

Chiranjit Goswami, who coached Akot from 2012-2015 with the Winnipeg Wolves, is not surprised to see Akot become the next Manitoban to play down south. The first time Goswami saw Akot play, he knew he was something special.
