Slan Sports Management has announced that Chad Posthumus has signed a one-year contract with Kagoshima Rebnise in the B2 Division of the newly formed Japanese B League.

Posthumus, a 6’11” center, has just completed his 2nd professional season, in which he played for two teams in the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). He played 22 games for the London Lightning before he was traded to the Island Storm, where he completed the season. Over the entire season, Posthumus averaged 11.0 points per game, and ranked 9th in the NBLC in both rebounds and blocks with 6.9 rebounds, while adding 0.8 blocks per game. The Island Storm lost to eventual champions, the Halifax Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs.

A Winnipeg, Manitoba native, Posthumus played high school basketball at River East Collegiate. He went on to start his collegiate career at the University of British Columbia where he played one season in Canadian Interuniversity Sport.  Posthumus then moved to Howard College in Texas for one year before transferring to Morehead State University in the NCAA for his final two seasons of eligibility.

In his senior year at Morehead State, Posthumus was the 4th leading rebounder in the NCAA, averaging 10.9 boards per game in just 25.7 minutes. He led the country in rebounds per 40 minutes with 17.1 as well as rebounding percentage at 25.2%. Posthumus also averaged 9.6 points per game and was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) 3rd Team, leading Morehead State to the OVC Tournament semifinals. After graduating, he was selected to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament as one of the top 64 seniors in the country, and was invited to pre-draft workouts with the Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls. Posthumus was eventually invited to the Chicago Bulls minicamp where he earned a spot on their Las Vegas Summer League roster.

Posthumus played for three teams in his rookie season in 2014-2015. He started the year with Levanga Hokkaido Sapporo in Japan, where he averaged 10.1 points and 8.1 rebounds over 16 games before moving to the Mississauga Power in the NBLC midway through the season. In three games with the Power, he boasted averages of 24.3 points and 15.3 rebounds per game. Posthumus then finished the season with Athletico Argentino Junin of the Argentinian Liga A. There he helped the team to a 4th place regular season finish in the South Division, averaging 9.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks in just 17.9 minutes per game.

Posthumus is eager to return to Japan and take on a big role for Kagoshima.

“It is wonderful to be back in Japan playing basketball with the Kagoshima Rebnis,” said Posthumus. “I am looking forward to an excellent, win-filled season.”

Last season, Kagoshima competed in Japan’s National Basketball Development League. The team finished the regular season with a 6-30 record. For 2016-2017, Kagoshima has joined the newly-formed B.League’s B2 Division as the result of a merger of Japan’s top two leagues, the BJ League and Japan’s National Basketball League.

May 16, 2025 – Winnipeg, MB — The City of Winnipeg officially unveiled “Honourary Chad Posthumus Way” this morning, renaming the stretch of Donald Street between Portage Avenue and Graham Avenue in tribute to the late Chad Posthumus. The ceremony, held in the Atrium of the Canada Life Centre, brought together Chad's family, friends, civic leaders, members of the basketball community, and fans to honour the life and legacy of one of Winnipeg’s most beloved athletes and community figures.

Chad Posthumus, who passed away on November 20, 2024, at the age of 33 following complications from a brain aneurysm, was more than a basketball player. As the first-ever signing and captain of the Winnipeg Sea Bears, he embodied leadership, resilience, and a deep commitment to community engagement. Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age seven, Chad became a powerful advocate for healthy living and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Chad’s basketball journey began at River East Collegiate, where he was recognized as an All-Manitoban and one of the top five high school players in Canada during his senior year. He represented Manitoba on the Provincial Team for three summers before playing collegiate basketball at the University of British Columbia, Howard College, and Morehead State University. At Morehead State, he ranked among the NCAA’s top rebounders and earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honours.

Chad’s career professionally spanned multiple countries and leagues, including stints in Japan, Argentina, and Canada. His impact was felt both on and off the court, as he dedicated countless hours to mentoring youth, volunteering, and advocating for diabetes awareness.

In recognition of his contributions, Basketball Manitoba has established the “Chad Posthumus Award” to honour individuals who exemplify leadership, community service, and resilience. Additionally, the Winnipeg Sea Bears announced plans to retire Chad’s No. 33 jersey during their upcoming season opener, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire future generations.

Further commemorating Chad’s impact, the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) hosted the inaugural Posthumus Family Hoopfest on April 4, 2025, at the Sport Manitoba Courts. This free event for WMBA teams featured skill-building activities and a dunk station hosted by the Posthumus family, fostering community engagement and celebrating Chad’s enduring influence on youth basketball.

The Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Thursday their first signing in franchise history, welcoming Canadian forward Chad Posthumus to the team.

A six-foot-11 forward, Posthumus returns to his hometown of Winnipeg after two seasons with the Ottawa BlackJacks where he became the first player in CEBL history to post a “20-20” when he recorded 23 points and 20 rebounds, leading Ottawa to a crucial CEBL quarter-final victory.

Playing professionally in Canada, Japan, and Argentina, Posthumus has averaged 10.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 20.3 minutes in 186 games over a seven-year pro career. In 2022, Posthumus represented the CEBL and Canada at the Basketball Champions League Americas (BCLA) as part of the Edmonton Stingers, where he averaged 12.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 25.5 minutes. He was recalled to the BCLA roster for 2022 CEBL champion Brampton Honey Badgers in 2023 where he averaged 15.3 minutes, 6 points, and 4.5 rebounds in four games played. Posthumus was also recently selected to be a part of the Canadian Senior Men's National Team for the recent FIBA World Cup Qualifiers window held in late February alongside 10 other players with prior CEBL experience.

Posthumus began his career in the CEBL in 2019, the league’s inaugural year. The Winnipeg product was a member of the first-ever CEBL Championship title team, the Saskatchewan Rattlers.

His journey in pro basketball dates back to October 11, 2014, when he put up 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Levanga Hokkaido of the Japan Basketball League. In January of 2015, he signed with the Atletico Argentino de Junin in Argentina where he averaged 9.7 points and 4.9 rebounds in 11 games. He also played four games for the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Summer League in 2014.

Collegiately, Posthumus played a pair of seasons with Morehead State in the NCAA Division I, and a season each with the University of British Columbia and Howard College.

The Winnipeg native attended River East Collegiate where he was considered one of the top high school basketball players in the country, averaging 39 points, 25 rebounds and seven blocks as a senior.

His roots in the game and Winnipeg run deep. Posthumus’ mother, Diana, played basketball at the University of Winnipeg and was a part of the Canadian National Team program.

The homegrown talent is suitably the first player to sign with the Winnipeg Sea Bears for their inaugural season. Last month, the Sea Bears, in collaboration with the CEBL, announced its 2023 regular season schedule, which opens on May 27th with a home game versus the Vancouver Bandits.

Quotes:

“Chad is a talented professional and a perfect fit for our club as we embark on our Inaugural season. Not only is he an amazing player and a proud Manitoban, he is, by all accounts, an exceptional person who will bring strong leadership and values to our young organization.”

- Jason Smith, President, Winnipeg Sea Bears Basketball Club

“It Is an absolute honour to be the first player signed to the Winnipeg Sea Bears franchise. Being able to play professional basketball in my hometown, in front of all my family, friends, and supporters is a dream come true. I am beyond excited to see everyone out at Canada Life Centre for our first game on May 27th. Go Bears!”

- Chad Posthumus, Forward, Sea Bears Basketball Club

TORONTO, August 1, 2014 - Slan Sports Management has announced that Chad Posthumus of Winnipeg has signed a one-year contract with Levanga Hokkaido Sapporo of the National Basketball League of Japan (NBL).

Posthumus, a 6’11” center, played the past two seasons at Morehead State University. In his senior year, he was the 4th leading rebounder in the NCAA, averaging 10.9 per game in just 25.7 minutes. He led the country in rebounds per 40 minutes at 17.1 as well as rebounding percentage at 25.2%.  Posthumus also averaged 9.6 points per game and was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Third Team, leading his team to the OVC Tournament Semi Finals. A Winnipeg, Manitoba native, Posthumus played high school basketball at River East Collegiate. He then started his collegiate career at the University of British Columbia where he played one season in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. Posthumus then played one year at Howard College in Texas before transferring to Morehead State for his final two seasons of eligibility.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to start my professional career and can’t wait to be a part of the Levanga Hokkaido Sapporo Basketball Club in Japan,” said Posthumus. “My two years at Morehead State and this summer with the Chicago Bulls have really helped prepare me for the next level. I’m very grateful for this opportunity.”

Levanga Hokkaido Sapporo finished tied for third place in the NBL Eastern Conference last season with a record of 31-23 but failed to make the playoffs as they lost the tiebreaker to Link Tochigi Brex. Posthumus aims to help them improve on that record this coming season by adding size, toughness, and an interior presence.

“Our desire is a parallel improvement for both Levanga and Chad,” said Piti Hurtado, Head Coach of Levanga Hokkaido Sapporo. “We hope Chad comes in, makes the necessary adjustments to life and culture in Japan and continues to work hard.”

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Thursday that they have signed Winnipegger Chad Posthumus for the 2024 season. Posthumus was the first-ever signing for the club after their inception in 2023 and served as the captain of the inaugural team.

He made history by sinking the Sea Bears’ first-ever Target Score game-winning basket at Canada Life Centre on May 27, 2023. Posthumus led the CEBL in offensive rebounds last season with 70, while averaging 6.7 points per game.

A leader on and off the court, Posthumus helped the Sea Bears to a 12-8 regular season record last summer, tied for best in the Western Conference.

“I’m thrilled to be staying here at home in Winnipeg for a second season of Sea Bears basketball! Last year was just the beginning. We’re building something special, and I cannot wait to get back to playing in front of the best fans in the CEBL,” Posthumus said.

Posthumus is a veteran of the professional game, averaging more than 10 points per game over the last 10 years for teams in Canada, Japan, Argentina and Mexico. The big man brings with him a wealth of CEBL experience, having played for several organizations, including the championship-winning Saskatchewan Rattlers in the league’s first season (2019). Also a member of Team Canada, Posthumus has donned the maple leaf in the World Cup and AmeriCup.

“Chad is a key figure for our Sea Bears team on and off the floor. He has contributed so much to the start of our team on the court including his memorable game-winning put-back in our inaugural game. Chad has also helped our organization in countless ways off the floor in the city and region,” said Sea Bears head coach and general manager, Mike Taylor.

Posthumus averaged 8.7 points for Moorehead State in the NCAA Division I after a year each with the University of British Columbia and Howard College. Deemed one of the top high school players in the country, Posthumus averaged 39 points, 25 rebounds and seven blocks for the River East Collegiate Kodiaks in his senior year.

The Posthumus’ family’s ties to the game run deep. Chad’s mother, Diana, was also a member of the Canadian National Team and she spent her university years suiting up for the Winnipeg Wesmen.

Posthumus is passionate about giving back to his community as a KidSport Ambassador, community speaker, and advocate for those living with type one diabetes.

“In my opinion, Chad perfectly embodies what we would like the Sea Bears to be about: good people representing Winnipeg’s own professional basketball,” Taylor said.

The Sea Bears open the 2024 campaign on the road in Saskatoon, SK on May 22. They return to Winnipeg for their home opener on May 24 against the defending CEBL champions, Scarborough Shooting Stars. Season tickets and flex packs are available now.
