May 16, 2025 – Winnipeg, MB — The City of Winnipeg officially unveiled “Honourary Chad Posthumus Way” this morning, renaming the stretch of Donald Street between Portage Avenue and Graham Avenue in tribute to the late Chad Posthumus. The ceremony, held in the Atrium of the Canada Life Centre, brought together Chad's family, friends, civic leaders, members of the basketball community, and fans to honour the life and legacy of one of Winnipeg’s most beloved athletes and community figures.

Chad Posthumus, who passed away on November 20, 2024, at the age of 33 following complications from a brain aneurysm, was more than a basketball player. As the first-ever signing and captain of the Winnipeg Sea Bears, he embodied leadership, resilience, and a deep commitment to community engagement. Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age seven, Chad became a powerful advocate for healthy living and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Chad’s basketball journey began at River East Collegiate, where he was recognized as an All-Manitoban and one of the top five high school players in Canada during his senior year. He represented Manitoba on the Provincial Team for three summers before playing collegiate basketball at the University of British Columbia, Howard College, and Morehead State University. At Morehead State, he ranked among the NCAA’s top rebounders and earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honours.

Chad’s career professionally spanned multiple countries and leagues, including stints in Japan, Argentina, and Canada. His impact was felt both on and off the court, as he dedicated countless hours to mentoring youth, volunteering, and advocating for diabetes awareness.

In recognition of his contributions, Basketball Manitoba has established the “Chad Posthumus Award” to honour individuals who exemplify leadership, community service, and resilience. Additionally, the Winnipeg Sea Bears announced plans to retire Chad’s No. 33 jersey during their upcoming season opener, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire future generations.

Further commemorating Chad’s impact, the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) hosted the inaugural Posthumus Family Hoopfest on April 4, 2025, at the Sport Manitoba Courts. This free event for WMBA teams featured skill-building activities and a dunk station hosted by the Posthumus family, fostering community engagement and celebrating Chad’s enduring influence on youth basketball.
