Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast we have Keith Omoerah.

Keith graduated from Grant Park High school, where he finished his high school career as the 2nd top player in the province.

He’s a former member of the Manitoba Provincial Team, playing for two summers.

He played at the University of Manitoba, where he was a Canada West Second Team All-Star and helped the team return to the National Championships for the first time in over 30 years. In only 4 seasons with the Bisons, he finished his career 4th in total rebounds, 7th in field goals made, 6th in assists,10th in blocks, 7th in steals, 5th in games started and 4th in minutes played all-time.

After his 4th year, he decided to start his professional career where he played in Norway, Ukraine, France, Iran, Spain, and Sweden.

He has represented the Nigerian National Team starting in 2017 through to 2021.

Manitoba’s Keith Omoerah has signed a new professional basketball contact for the upcoming 2021-22 season with Peñas Huesca which is located in Huesca, Aragón in northeastern Spain. The team currently plays in the Liga Española de Baloncesto, also known as LEB Oro and is the second basketball division of the Spanish basketball league system after the Liga ACB.

Keith is coming off a summer experience with the Nigerian National Team and was part of its pre-Olympics training that took place in California prior to the team heading to the Tokyo last month.  

Keith enters his 5th season as a professional and has played in Norway, Ukraine and France in previous seasons.  Prior to his pro career, he was a stand out member of the Manitoba Bisons including being named as a Canada West All-Star.

University of Manitoba Bisons alumni Keith Omoerah has announced his recent signing with a pro basketball club in France with Union Poitiers Basket 86 and will begin with the team in the very near future.  

Keith started the season at MBC Mykolaiv in Ukrainian Superleague and in 18 games he recorded 12.9ppg, 4.8rpg, and 4.1apg. Omoerah ended the last season at BC Odessa (also in Superleague) where in three games he averaged 8.3ppg, 5.3rpg, and 4.0apg.  Omoerah has been regularly called up to the Nigerian Senior National Team since 2018.

He has played also professionally in Iran and Norway and was selected to the Ukrainian Superleague All-Star Game in 2019.

Omoerah attended Manitoba University until 2017 and it is his fifth season as a professional player.  In 2019, Keith joined Basketball Manitoba as one of its school ambassadors and visited over 25 schools in the greater Winnipeg area promoting the sport basketball to over 5000 children.

Former U of M Bison Keith Omoerah has recently agreed to a new contract with MBC Mykolaiv of the Ukrainian Super League. The third-year pro makes his return to the club after splitting last season between the Iranian league with Exxon Sport Club and the Ukrainian Super League with BC Odessa.  The Winnipeg native also has international experience. Omoerah has been a regular member of the Nigerian national team since 2018, playing in FIBA events such as the African Cup.

 Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce the continuation of an opportunity for elementary and middle schools in the greater Winnipeg area to a part of a new outreach program led by Winnipeg based professional basketball player and Nigerian National Team member Keith Omoerah.

This program comes as an extension of the visits that professional basketball player Emily Potter made with Basketball Manitoba from December to May 2019.

Keith is one of the most successful basketball players to come out of Manitoba and is now able to get involved with Basketball Manitoba with this new in-school opportunity for schools to take advantage of at NO COST TO THE SCHOOL.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW 

WHO: Professional Basketball Player Keith Omoerah
WHAT: A new basketball outreach program to support the physical education staff at Winnipeg area elementary or middle schools
WHEN: Opportunities are open during regular school hours in May and June 2019.
WHERE: Any Winnipeg area elementary or middle school (K-8)
WHY: To support an area school with a unique opportunity to have one of Manitoba's most successful basketball players visit your school to promote the sport of basketball on the court and motivate students to stay healthy and active!




PROGRAM DETAILS 
  • Keith will help lead the physical education classes for the day (or set amount of time) at the school and will include his leading the students through an introductory experience with basketball including different age-appropriate skills and drills.  
  • The time will include some stories on his journey through the sport and how basketball has taken him to all corners of the world.
  • The school will need to provide access to the gymnasium space with at least 2 basketball hoops and ideally have available 1 basketball per student.  Keith will come with any other training aids to support his time in the gym with the students.  
  • Someone at the school is asked to briefly introduce Keith to the students before he takes things from there. A brief script will be provided.    
  • There is NO COST to the school or others for Keith to be present during school hours.  
  • Keith will be able to attend a set number of schools as a special guest as part of the physical education class during normal school hours and will be scheduled on a first come first served basis.    
  • Keith has completed both a Canadian Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry check and proof of completion can be provided upon request to the school. 
  • Interested schools can complete the below online application form to express their interest in having Keith at the school!

Congratulations go out to University of Manitoba Bison and Manitoba Provincial Team alumni Keith Omoerah on being selected to the Nigerian Senior National Team!  The team is currently in a series with Uganda as part of the new FIBA World Cup qualification series leading into next summer in China.  The Nigerian team took the game earlier today with a 109-66 win and currently sit with a 4-0 record in Group B of the African Qualifiers with previous wins over Rwanda and Mali. 

He commented, "This is a honour to the highest degree. There are almost 200 million people in Nigeria and to be selected as 1 of the 12 to participate for the national basketball team is almost incomprehensible. I am truly honoured to be here and will work my hardest to make Nigeria proud. Thank you to everyone back in Manitoba for the support!"

Keith played four seasons (2010-11, 2011-12, 2015-16 and 2016-17) with the Manitoba Bisons while being named a conference All-Star (2015-16 Canada West Second Team) and helped the Bisons to a national championship appearance in the 2016-17 season and back-to-back Canada West Final Four visits (2016 and 2017).

He is a graduate of Grant Park High School in Winnipeg and this past year played professional basketball for Bærum Basket in Norway's premier basketball league.

Bison men's basketball alum and guard Keith Omoerah has signed a professional contract to play for Bærum Basket in Norway's premier basketball league for 2017-18 season.

Omoerah, 25, played four seasons (2010-11, 2011-12, 2015-16 and 2016-17) at Manitoba while being named a conference All-Star (2015-16 Canada West Second Team) and helped the Bisons to a national championship appearance in the 2016-17 season and back-to-back Canada West Final Four visits (2016 and 2017).

"I feel very honoured and thrilled to be starting my professional career in Norway playing for Bærum Basket," commented Omoerah. "Coach Mathias Eckhoff has given me a great opportunity and one I believe is a great fit. I owe a special thank you to my family, Kirby Schepp, my former teammates, the University of Manitoba and everyone who has helped me get to where I am today. For that I will be forever grateful. I am excited to become apart of the Bærum community and club."

Omoerah finished his fourth and final season at Manitoba in 2016-17. The Winnipeg native was tenth in conference with 31.3 minutes played per game and was fifth with 8.7 conference rebounds per game while starting in all 20 regular season games plus was named Wesmen Classic MVP for a second consecutive season. In 2015-16, Omoerah, a Grant Park HS grad, returned from a three year absence and was named Canada West Second Team All-Star after almost averaging a double-double (13.2 ppg, 9.8 reb/g) while starting all 20 games. The 6'4", 200 lbs. versatile guard was fifth on team in scoring with 9.3 ppg and second on Bisons with 6.0 reb/g in 2011-12 and during his rookie campaign in 2010-11, he was seventh on team in scoring with 6.1 ppg.

Bison men's basketball head coach Kirby Schepp, in his ninth season at the helm, said, "We are very proud to see another one of our guys get the opportunity to live out their dreams of playing professional ball. Keith has continued to improve and work in his time with us and it has really paid off. I know Keith's approach to game and tremendous abilities will lead to him having long career overseas. We very excited and proud to watch him take this next step in his career."

Bison Notes: Omoerah is the second Bison to sign a pro contract as he joins fellow Bison teammate guard AJ Basi who signed a professional contract to play for Newcastle Eagles of British Professional Basketball League for the 2017-18 season.

The Winnipeg native almost finished the season averaging a double-double with 13.2 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game in his third season at Manitoba. 

The 2015-16 Canada West men's basketball all-star and all-rookie teams were announced by the conference on Monday, March 7. The University of Manitoba Bisons had one student-athlete honoured for his efforts.

Bison men's basketball guard/forward Keith Omoerah (pronounced: Oh-mair-ah) has been selected as 2015-16 Canada West Second Team All-Star. This is the first time a Bison has been named a conference All-Star since the 2012-13 season (Stephan Walton) plus only second time since the 2007-08 (Isaac Ansah was Second Team).

Omoerah, 24, played in his third season with the Bisons and had an outstanding season in Canada West. Omoerah's season is all the more remarkable as he returned to Manitoba after a three-year absence and last played at the U of Manitoba campus in the 2011-12 season. The Winnipeg native was one of many factors in the Bisons finishing with a 15-5 conference regular season record and hosting conference playoffs for the first time since the 2003-04 season. He almost finished the season averaging a double-double with 13.2 points per game (32nd in the Canada West) and 9.8 rebounds (fourth in conference) while starting and playing in all 20 conference regular season games. 

The 6'5", 205 lbs. guard/forward showed his versatility as he also added 3.8 assists per game, good for a tie for fourth in Canada West and 2.1 steals per game, tied for fifth in the conference. In addition, Omoerah was fourth in conference minutes played at 34.1, was 18th in field goal shooting percentage at 49.1% plus his offensive rebounds per game at 2.4 was tied for seventh in Canada West while defensive rebounds per game total of 7.4 was first in the conference.

Bison Notes: Omoerah is only the fourth Bison men's basketball player to be selected as a Canada West conference all-star over the last 12 seasons (2012-13: Stephan Walton, Second Team; 2006-07 and 2007-08: Isaac Ansah, Second Team All-Star; 2003-04: Taylor Cherris-Wilding, Second Team All-Star).
