REMINDER: Targeted Athlete Program (TAP) Tryouts Aug 17 & 18, 2019 at U of Wpg

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce a number of changes to its High-Performance programming for the 2019-2020 season.

The male Provincial Team model will see changes effective for the spring of 2020 and adopt a new model that will see the 15U and the 17U male Provincial Teams train around club activity until late July when it will host a mini-camp before departing to compete in the National Championships. A training group of 15-16 players will be selected during the Provincial Team tryouts in late May 2020. A 10 player roster will be named before departing for the Canada Basketball National Championships in August 2020. The male Manitoba Provincial Teams will not travel to summer events other than the Canada Basketball National Championships. The participation fee for the male program will be dramatically reduced due to the absence of warm-up tournaments leading up to the National Championships. The removal of financial barriers and programming conflicts will allow all of Manitoba's top players to fully participate in both their club activities and represent Manitoba at the National Championships.

The Male Center For Performance Program is going to be rebranded and grown into a competitive club program that will continue its high-performance training model but will see the addition of team play in leagues and tournaments in both Canada and the USA. The program will now be known as "TAP Manitoba" (Targeted Athlete Program of Manitoba). The male program will follow a curriculum designed to develop players ages 15 and under following the Canada Basketball Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model. This curriculum will be shared publicly for others to see and use in their programs. The male TAP will train out of the Canada Games Sport for Life Center and will be led by Basketball Manitoba's High-Performance Coach Dan Becker, current 15U Provincial Team Head Coach Jon Janzen and current 16U Provincial Team Head Coach Zach Giesbrecht. The male program will select up to 20 players to train and then break into two teams for league and tournament play at the age 15U team and 14U that may see some talented 13U athletes included on the final roster.

The female CP (Center For Performance) program will also be rebranded to TAP Manitoba and will also follow an up-dated curriculum designed for each of their age groups (age 15U and 17U). The female program will continue with their current competitive model of high-performance training along with age advanced local competition and tournament play in Canada and the USA. The female TAP program will continue to be led by Basketball Manitoba's High-Performance Coach Randy Kusano and his staff.

Tryouts for both the male and female TAP Manitoba program will take place August 17 & 18 at the University of Winnipeg's Duckworth Center.

Tryout Notes:

No preregistration required
Registration will begin 30 minutes prior to the first tryout per age category.
All players are to complete the TAP Tryout Form and bring it to the first tryout. Additional copies will be available on site.
$25.00 per person tryout fee due at the first tryout session
All registered players will receive a Basketball Manitoba t-shirt
Cash, debit, Visa, MasterCard or cheques (payable to 'Basketball Manitoba') are accepted on site
Receipts will be issued upon request only
Basketballs will be provided at each tryout
Players should arrive at least 20 minutes early to the tryout sessions dressed ready to play
Players are to attend both sessions for your age group
Players making one of the teams will be required to pay the registration fee of $1300.00 for the program that will be due at a set payment schedule later in the fall.

New All-Access Coaching Videos Released Featuring Male and Female Centre for Performance Teams

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to release another 2 videos in its ever-growing All-Access Video Series. The new videos feature both the male and female Centre for Performance program at a recent practice led by coaches Dan Becker and Randy Kusano. A total of 3 hours of uncut practice and training material is provided in the 2 videos that any coach can pull ideas from for their program.

Manitoba's Niyah Becker & Anna Kernaghan to National Camp

TORONTO, ON - 61 athletes from across the country have been invited to participate in the Women's National Age-Group Assessment Camps at Humber College (Toronto, ON) from December 14-19, 2017. This includes Manitoba athletes Niyah Becker and Anna Kernaghan. Both athletes represented Manitoba at this past summer's Canada Games held in Winnipeg and have been involved in the Manitoba Centre for Performance program.

CAMP BEGINS FRIDAY: 6 Manitoba Female Basketball Players Invited to Canada National Team Camps

TORONTO, ON (February 8, 2017) – Fifty-six athletes from across Canada, including six from Manitoba have been invited to take part in the women’s national age-group assessment camp, to be held at Humber College (Toronto, ON) and University of Toronto Mississauga (Mississauga, ON) from March 24-30, 2017.

"We look forward bringing this group of new and returning nationally identified athletes into our camp, to see them compete and provide direction on their individual performance plans,” said Denise Dignard, director of women's high performance.

“As we kick-off a new Olympic quadrennial this summer, continued assessment and development of our athletes at all levels is key in moving Canada forward on the international scale.”

The purpose of this camp is to provide a national training environment with international focus to top identified athletes in a variety of age-groups ranging from those born in 1998 and later. This process will aid in identifying athletes to be invited to the U16 and U19 national team programs.

The six from Manitoba were identified from the Western Canada ID Camps held in December and include Niyah Becker, Emily Dewey, Mikayla Funk, Raizel Guinto, Dana Inglis and Claire Signatovich (pictured above left to right). Due to injury, Emily Dewey will not be attending.

Manitoba coaches attending the camp include Manitoba's Canada Games head coach Alyssa Grant and University of Manitoba Head Coach Michele Sung (Hynes).

Canada’s age-group girls are ranked 4th in the world by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Canada’s U16 squad will head to Argentina for the U16 FIBA Americas Championship for women this upcoming June. The U19 team will compete at the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championships in Udine and Cividale del Friuli, Italy, in July.

Eight Manitoba Athletes Invited to Canada Basketball National Identification Camps

A record number of eight Manitoba female basketball players have been invited by Canada Basketball to its upcoming Women's National Age-Group Assessment Camps in Edmonton. They will join 63 other athletes from across the country have been invited to participate at Humber College (Toronto, ON) or the Saville Community Sports Centre (Edmonton, AB) from December 15-19.

Athletes invited from Manitoba include (pictured above, left to right) Lauren Bartlett, Niyah Becker, Emily Dewey, Mikayla Funk, Raizel Guinto, Dana Inglis, Anna Kernaghan and Claire Signatovich.

"We look forward to assessing progress of returnees and welcoming new nationally identified athletes into our camp and see them compete and provide direction on their individual performance plans,” said Denise Dignard, Director of Women's High Performance. "We are excited to gather national and provincial coaches, technical leaders and mentors from across the country, all of whom are committed to the long-term development of athletes in our Podium Pathway."

The objective of the camp is to provide a national training environment with international focus to top identified athletes born in 1998 and later. At the camp, national team coaches, sports scientists and technical staff will identify athletes who will be invited to the next stage of the 2017 age-group programs.

Athletes born 1998 or later will be assessed for their participation in the U19 team, competing at the 2017 U19 FIBA World Championships for Women in Udine and Cividale del Friuli, Italy from July 22nd-30th. Last summer, the team garnered a Silver medal at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championships in Chile, qualifying them for Worlds.

Athletes born 2001 or later will be assessed for participation in the U16 team, which will compete this summer at the 2017 U16 FIBA Americas Championships for Women. Last summer, the team placed 7th at the U17 FIBA World Championships for Women, held in Zaragoza, Spain.

Canada is currently ranked 4th overall in the FIBA women's age-group rankings.

The Manitoba athletes have been identified through the Manitoba Provincial Team, Centre for Performance and the Canada Basketball National Championships in the recent years. Joining the athletes from Manitoba will be Michele Sung (Hynes) of the University of Manitoba.

Canada Basketball's Mike MacKay in Winnipeg this Weekend for CP Training

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to welcome Canada Basketball's Mike MacKay back to Winnipeg this weekend to lead the Manitoba Centre for Performance Female Training Weekend. The 3 day camp will see the current members of the Manitoba Centre for Performance program work with Coach MacKay on May 6-8.

Mike is the Performance Manager with the Canadian Women's National Team Program. He is primarily responsible for the continued development of the women’s program’s high performance athlete profile and the identification of standards against which Canada’s female athletes at the senior, development and youth levels can be measured. Through his deep knowledge base and familiarity with Canada’s player pool, MacKay will provide technical leadership to the women’s Targeted Athlete Strategy (TAS) program. The native of Truro, N.S. will also be counted upon to assist and guide the continued development of Canada Basketball’s development and age-group women’s national team coaches.

Mike has been a regular to Manitoba over the past number of years as a presenter at the Super Coaches Clinic and other special visits tied to player development. Local basketball coaches who may want to take in some of the sessions can contact Dan Becker at Basketball Manitoba for more information.
