Manitoba's Graham Bodnar has been officially selected to represent the Canadian Deaf National Men's Basketball team at the 2025 Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan. This prestigious event marks a historic milestone as it will be the first time in 40 years, since 1985, that Canada has qualified for the Deaflympics in Men's Basketball.

Reflecting on his journey, Bodnar recalls the pivotal moment when the Canada Deaf Games came to Winnipeg in 2018. "It truly opened my eyes to a world I didn't know existed," he remarked. That fall, Bodnar had the opportunity to try out for the Deaf National Team despite not fully understanding what it entailed. He vividly remembers the coach expressing confidence in his potential, believing that with Bodnar on the team, they could achieve significant strides internationally.

Through dedication and perseverance, Bodnar familiarized himself with the workings of the Deaflympics, the highest level in Deaf Sports. It became his goal to contribute everything he could to help the team reach this elite level. "While I still can't believe the opportunities I've had along the way, after all these years, it is finally official," Bodnar expressed with pride.

CONGRATULATIONS GRAHAM!

Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Graham Bodnar.

He is a staple in the basketball community.  If there is a basketball event, he will be there as a player, coach, or simply supporting in some way.

He is a graduate of Providence College in Otterburne, Manitoba, where he lead his team to two MCAC Championships and two ACCA National Championships. During his time there, he was recognized as 2nd team All-Conference two times, as well as an academic All-American.

He played professional 3x3 Basketball in 2014, qualifying for the FIBA 3x3 World Tour twice. Additionally, he played professionally in Japan for one season.

He is a member of Canada’s Deaf National Basketball Team. He’s played in the USADB National Tournament, where he was named MVP, and his team won the Division 2 National Championship. Most recently, he participated in the Deaf Pan American Basketball Championships in Argentina.

He is the current head coach and teaches at Richer School in South East Manitoba, a position he’s held for 14 years.

He was the head coach of the Providence College women’s program, assisted with the men's program, and was a regular instructor at their summer camps.  Additionally, he’s coached for one year with the Manitoba Provincial Team program.

Most people know him from his dominance in Sr Men’s, winning many championships over the years. However, he will remember for holding the “unofficial” record for playing on most teams simultaneously in a single season.

A big congrats to Manitoba’s Graham Bodnar, who recently attended the Canadian Deaf National Basketball Team Selection Camp in Toronto and was selected for the team that will represent Canada at the Pan American Deaf Basketball Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina in November!

From there, the team will have a chance to qualify for the World Deaf Basketball Championships in Greece in 2023.

Congrats Graham!!

The squad continues to prepare for the Canada Deaf Games in July in Montreal and the 3x3 Deaf World Cup in September in Israel. Other opportunities for some team members include the Deaf 5 on 5 qualifications for the Pan Am Games in Argentina in November and World Championships in Greece in 2023.

Congrats Graham!

Graham commented, “ I couldn’t be more proud or appreciative to be a part of the first ever Deaf 3x3 National Basketball Team. The chance to represent Canada in 3x3 basketball against the rest the world is a huge honour that I do not take lightly.”

Graham is one of Manitoba’s most prolific 3x3 basketball players having played in past FIBA World Tour events including playing professional 3x3 in Japan in the summer of 2019.

CONGRATS GRAHAM!!
