Basketball Manitoba is pleased to support year 9 of the SWISH outdoor basketball program, coming to Winnipeg's core this July & August! Through a partnership between several faculties/units of the University of Manitoba and other community partners, a free outdoor drop-in basketball program will once again be taking place this summer at the University of Manitoba Bannatyne Campus located at the Health Sciences Centre.

Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Xavier Smith.

Xavier is a graduate of Sisler High School and played basketball at Lakeland College before transferring to Brandon University and finally to the University of Manitoba.

He played for the Manitoba Provincial Team for three summers from 2002 to 2004.  He returned to his alma mater Manitoba Bisons, to be an assistant coach from 2019 to 2021.

Upon ending his college career with the Bisons in 2013, he played internationally at the 3x3 level. Since 2012, he has volunteered his time offering skill camps with community centres around the city and has been the SWISH Basketball program coordinator.  The program offers free basketball drop-in experiences for inner youth through the summer months and will see its return this coming summer after a three-year pause during the pandemic.

The Summer Weekend Inner-city Supervised Hoops (SWISH) program is helping develop mentors and university-level basketball players.

SWISH gives inner-city kids a place to play basketball in a supervised setting every Saturday throughout the summer. Parking lot E on the Bannatyne campus is converted into basketball courts and the free-drop-in run by the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Office of Community Engagement is staffed by U of M Bison and community basketball players, and former SWISH participants.

One of those university players is Brittanie Parisien. She’s in her fourth season with the University of Manitoba Bison women’s basketball team and she took part in SWISH sessions when she was growing up. The six-hour drop-in gave her a place to play basketball during the summer break and receive valuable tips from the student-athlete staff members.

BASKETBALL TAKES OVER PARKING LOT E ON THE BANNATYNE CAMPUS DURING THE SUMMER.

“I was so happy to start working here,” said Parisien, who is in her second year as a SWISH staff member. “I can tell these kids that I played out here just like them, and now I play for a university team.”

Binh Nguyen is another SWISH staff member who went from shooting hoops in parking lot E to playing at a much higher level. He’s entering his second season with the Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers men’s basketball team.

Binh said he was taught a lot by the staff members when he was a kid. “I learned that the main thing is to work hard,” said Nguyen, a psychology student. “The way to get better is to work hard.”

One of the staff members who helped instill that work ethic in Nguyen is Xavier Smith. The former Bison men’s basketball player (from 2011-2013) is now the coordinator of the SWISH program. He started as a staff member when SWISH began in 2012.

“SWISH is a safe place not only to play basketball but to interact with positive people like Brittanie and Binh, and learn how they got to where they are right now,” Smith said. “I think that’s huge for the kids.”

THE SIX-HOUR DROP-IN TAKES PLACE ON SATURDAYS IN JULY AND AUGUST.

Camille Mendoza, a Grade 12 student attending SWISH, said she’s inspired by Parisien and Nguyen.

“Binh went to my high school and he came to SWISH regularly,” she said. “Seeing him play for CMU now is really encouraging for myself because I’m going into university soon. And Brittanie used to go to Garden City and now plays for U of M so it’s nice to have people around you like that to show you where to go and how to get there.”

Karen Cook, co-lead, Office of Community Engagement, said that seeing the kids succeed is encouraging.

“In the beginning, when it was a new program, we weren’t sure of the impact SWISH would have,” Cook said. “Then eight seasons later, to see kids going on to play university basketball, it is super rewarding to know they’ve stayed with the program and I think that speaks to the level of impact we’ve had on some of these kids’ lives.”

The program ran Saturdays in July and August. On average, 35 kids showed up to shoot hoops each session this summer, which Smith said is five more kids at each drop-in than last year. “I think that’s amazing,” Smith said. “It’s telling us that people are talking and the word is getting around.”

SWISH partners include Basketball Manitoba, City of Winnipeg, Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management, Joe Doupe Recreation Centre, U of M Parking Services, U of M Security Services and U of M Physical Plant.

Basketball Manitoba is pleased to share the news that Gray Academy of Winnipeg has donated 150 towards the SWISH Basketball Program as part of its leadership program at the school.  The funds were raised at its Raiders Rumble Basketball Tournament that was played earlier this year.  Instead of charging a team fee, the leadership students decided to ask each team to bring one basketball per player.

The goal of its 'Project 2020' is to raise 2020 basketballs by the year 2020.

Leading the program at the school are 202 chair Dylan Kagan and Lauren Cogan.  Members of the council also include Devin Cohen and Sarah Jacobsohn and supported at the school by teacher Jamie Kagan (pictured above with SWISH Coordinator Xavier Smith and Basketball Manitoba's Adam Wedlake).

Gray Academy of Jewish Education is a Junior Kindergarten to grade 12, co-educational post secondary preparatory school that places equal value on Jewish and General academic programs.  Nestled along the Assiniboine River, Gray Academy is located at the Asper Jewish Community Campus. It is the only independent Jewish day school in Winnipeg, and is the only Jewish day school in western Canada with an international student homestay program.  Gray Academy prides itself on its ability to nurture the well-being of its students and to provide them with opportunities that encourage them to become positive contributors to their local and global communities.

Basketball Manitoba and the SWISH basketball program are grateful to be the recipients of their efforts and will use the donation to get the basketballs in the hands of those who can benefit from them the most!

If you would like to help the project reach its goals, please contact Jamie Kagen at jkagan@grayacademy.ca

Bison basketball alumni and current SWISH Basketball coordinator Xavier Smith has a special fundraising offer to support the SWISH program this summer.   As a Sales Consultant for Winnipeg Honda, he has created a sponsorship program to help support SWISH Basketball.  SWISH (Summer Weekend Inner-City Supervised Hoops) is a summer based program that supports and promotes the sport for inner-city youth.  Entering his 3rd year as coordinator for the SWISH program, he would like to continue to build and bring excitement towards the game of basketball.

The sponsorship program is a referral program that has been created with Winnipeg Honda.  This program is supported through referrals that are generated from the schools, drop-in centers, universities and sports clubs that are involved with the SWISH program.   For every successful sale generated from this program, a donation of $100.00 will go towards SWISH.  The donations will be used for prizes, shoes and sports gear for the youth.  As a salesperson for the Dilawri group, he also sells other quality name brands such as:
