It is with great sadness that Basketball Manitoba shares the news of the passing of Mariel Sinclair. Mariel was named the recipient of the 2021 Morris Glimcher Student Manager Award as part of the Basketball Manitoba Awards presented last spring.  The award supported by retired MHSAA Executive Director, Morris Glimcher, recognizes a Grade 12 student part of a varsity basketball team in Manitoba in the role of a "manager".

Mariel was a committed team manager with the Sagkeeng Ancinabe High School Wolves throughout her high school career.  Her former coach, Andrew Klaprat had this to say about Mariel.

"As Team Manager, Mariel performed several functions for me.  She attended nearly every game and practice over the 3 seasons we were at Sagkeeng Anicinabe High School together.  Her teammates respected her as much as anyone else involved with the team. She was as much a part of our team's run of success as any player we had, and we had success, including hosting the 2018-19 AA Varsity Girls Provincial Championships, and making it into Provincial Qualifiers in 2019-20 as the 12 seed.  She was someone who has pride in their school and community and uses whatever skillset and abilities they have, to help in not just any, but in every way they can."

She had aspirations to attend Red River College to study the Culinary Arts, of which she had an affinity for cooking with her family.

She will be greatly missed by those around her.  Basketball Manitoba extends the sympathies of the basketball community to Mariel's family and friends during this difficult time.

May she rest in peace.
