Algoma University and the Thunderbird Varsity Athletics Program have announced that Aimee Garland of Winnipeg has joined the women's basketball program for the 2018-19 season.

"Aimee rounds up our recruiting class this year at the guard position. We are very happy to have Aimee join us as she has some college experience and will add more depth to our team." Said, Coach Ryan Vetrie.

Garland is a 5'4 point guard from Winnipeg, Manitoba and will be pursuing a degree in the 3 year Bachelor of Psychology Program. She joins the Thunderbirds from Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) where she was a starter as a freshmen and a top scorer as her team won the MCAC Championship. She was given the honors of receiving rookie of the year for her team this past season.

"I really liked Aimee's drive when speaking with her. She sets goals, takes initiative to obtain those goals and is self-motivated. She handles it well, shoots it well and is unselfish, everything you look for in a point guard. She is eager to take on the challenge of playing at the next level and we're looking forward to see what she can accomplish next year."

"I chose Algoma because of how welcoming everyone was, I felt like Algoma is the right fit for me, basketball wise I love the work ethic of the team and how hard Coach Ryan works the team, and school wise it has the education I'm interested in." said Garland.

Prior to playing with Canadian Mennonite University, Aimee was a graduate of Kildonan East Collegiate where she was named a Basketball Manitoba AAAA Girls Graduating All-Star in 2017.

Algoma University is located in Sault Ste. Marie and competes in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) at the USPORTS (CIS) level.
