Brad Stevens, one of my favourite NBA coaches and one of the best young minds in the game of basketball. While he has achieved great success at the NBA level, Stevens isn’t only concerned with the success of the big boys on his team. He’s also concerned with the success of the young boys and girls just starting to play all around the world.
At only the age of 40, and in his fourth season with the Boston Celtics, Stevens has taken  a 25 win team in 2013 to being on pace for 51 wins in 2017. To say he is just a good coach would be a massive understatement. Stevens’ is one of the best in the world, and he recently shared some pretty insightful words about coaching younger players.
Stevens talks about the impact coaches can have on youth athletes, and how their behaviour can positively impact their development as athletes. Stevens’ loves seeing coaches who are:
“high energy, enthusiastic, positive, but at the same time, if [the players] are not doing what they are supposed to be doing, can call a timeout and talk to them and say ‘we need to play better’.”
Further, he goes on about the two most important things when coaching young athletes:
“I think it’s appropriate to teach kids the right way to play the game, you just have to do it in a way that A) gets through to them; and B) makes them wanna come back. That might be the most important thing of all, especially with young kids.”
What Stevens’ talks about in regards to youth coaching directly relates to the coaching philosophy of Steve Nash Youth Basketball, which echos the exact same principles. Coach with energy, coach with passion, detect errors, and provide corrections where necessary – all the while emphasizing fun to helping to grow a passion for the game of basketball.
We agree wholeheartedly with you, Coach Stevens!
