Maples Community Centre Receives $450,000 in Captial Grants
The Maples Community Centre has been awarded $250 thousand as part of the $10M joint City/Province Building Communities Initiative (BCI) announced today by Premier Greg Selinger and Mayor Sam Katz.
An additional $200 thousand has been apportioned to Maples and Elwick School through a city ward allotment through Old Kildonan Councilor Mike O’Shaughnessy. All monies will be used for capital works with BCI’s contribution earmarked for work at the main Maples site, and the ward allotment reserved for Maples’ satellite site, Elwick.
Through consultations with various stakeholders and community groups, and under the direction of the Maples Recreation Association Inc. and the City of Winnipeg Planning, Property and Development Department, the following work has been ratified:
Maples main site
- Installation of a new, outdoor, WMBA standard, fenced, flex-paved basketball court
- Installation of a new outdoor tennis court
Elwick
- Drainage, paving and support structures (benches, garbage cans, fencing) for the cricket park
- Installation of an outdoor basketball half court
Maples basketball and cricket programs are enormously popular so these funding announcements are particularly meaningful to residents. Maples is also one of Winnipeg’s fastest growing constituencies so capital works are vital to meeting steadily increasing demand.
Work begins immediately and early estimates for completion are late 2011 early 2012.
