Manitoba’s Basketball Best Honored at Athletes Wear All-Star Banquet



(April 27, 1998)  The following awards were presented at the 1998 Athletes Wear / Manitoba Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Banquet, Saturday April 25 at Tec Voc High School.  Over 300 athletes, coaches and supporters, making the best-attended event in the Association’s history, attended the banquet.  Prior to the banquet the AAA, AA, A Graduating All-Star Games tipped off featuring the top Manitoba basketball players in those levels.  The Girls game saw the North take on the South at the Tec Voc Gymnasium at 11:00 AM with the North taking the game 75-62.  Tammy Mahone (Treherne) and Holly Johnson (Teulon) were named the Most Valuable Player and Player of the Game respectively.  At 1:00 PM, the Boys Game saw the South triumph, 91 - 84 over the North.  POG for the North was David Barrit-Flatt of St. John’s Ravenscourt and Jeff Lewis of Elmwood High School (South) picked up the MVP honors.



Following the Banquet was the AAAA Girls & Boys games showcasing the AAAA Graduating All-Stars from Winnipeg and Brandon.  In the Girls game, the North bettered the South, 68-60.  Players of the Game were Delissa Johnson (Vincent Massey), Michelle Smith (Glenlawn) and Heidi Schwartz of MBCI was awarded as MVP.  The Boys game saw the South squeak out the win 98-97.  Top performers were MVP Kevin Williams (Kelvin) and POG John Penner (River East). 



Each Player of the Game received a $50.00 gift certificate donated by Athletes Wear Co. and each MVP received a pair of NIKE Air Sleep Hoop basketball shoes, provided by NIKE Canada Ltd.  The MBCA would like to thank Athletes Wear, NIKE, Spalding, Basketball Manitoba, Greg Bouchard and Tec Voc High School for their support over the weekend!
