MANITOBA’S BEST HONORED AT BANQUET

(April 26, 1997 - 3:00 PM)        The following awards were presented at the 1997 Manitoba Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Banquet, Saturday April 26 at St. John’s Ravenscourt.  The banquet was attended by over 250 athletes, coaches and supporters, making the best attended event in the Association’s history.  Prior to the banquet the AAA, AA, A Graduating All-Star Games tipped off featuring the top Manitoba basketball players in those levels.  The Girls game saw the North take on the South at the SJR Gymnasium at 11:00 AM with the North taking the game 72 to 50 over the South squad.  At 1:00 PM, the Boys Game saw the North win again, 78 - 75 over the South.  Leading the way for the North was Donovan Martin with 18 points and David Duerksen with 14 points.  Following the Banquet was the AAAA Girls & Boys games, also at Ravenscourt, showcasing the AAAA Graduating All-Stars from Winnipeg and Brandon.  In the Girls game, the North carried on the sweep with a convincing 92 - 55 win over the south.  Scoring a game high 16 was Cheryl-Jean Paul of the North team.  Ruth-Anne Joseph led the way for the South with 10 points.  In the Boys game, Suk Singh led the way with a game high 19 points, giving the South its first win of the day.  They defeated the North 110 - 85.  The North was lead by Marc Carreira with 17 points.
