 Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce that we’ve partnered with the Sport Manitoba Clinic at 145 Pacific Ave in Winnipeg to hold same-day appointments every Monday for Basketball Manitoba members. Athletes can skip the walk-in wait and see a physiotherapist to assess basketball injuries.

At a recent Basketball Manitoba Board of Directors Meeting, a new policy was passed tied to basketball player camps hosted in Manitoba and the requirement that all camps that are to be advertised on the Basketball Manitoba website must have an accident and/or liability insurance plan in place effective January 1, 2017.

In 2015, Basketball Manitoba introduced its Camp Insurance Program opportunity to all camp operators in Manitoba to consider offering as part of their camp features.  Typically, the insurance premium per camper sits at $1 per day.  Most camps offered are usually 3-5 days in length, so that would me a premium of $3-$5 per camper for the coverage.

The coverage provided by Basketball Manitoba includes protection for situations involving an accident and assistance of up to $2000.00 per incident to cover rehabilitation costs not already covered by Manitoba Health.  These typically involve ones tied to doctor prescribed physiotherapy, athletic therapy, chiropractor, massage therapy, osteopath, pharmaceutical and ambulance costs.   The coverage also includes all registered coaches who are working at the camp (no additional premium for coaches to be covered) as well as up to $5,000,000 in liability coverage for everyone involved including the facility.  Many facility owners are now asking for proof of such coverage for a outside group being granted use of the venue.

Beginning in 2017, all basketball camps operators seeking to promote their camps on the Basketball Manitoba website must either opt into the Basketball Manitoba Camp Insurance Program or provide proof of other similar coverage they may already hold from another insurance provider.

Question on this can be directed to Adam Wedlake at Basketball Manitoba.

Basketball Manitoba has a comprehensive Accident and Liability Insurance Program for all players, coaches, officials, administrators and volunteers registered with our programs and our Member Associations.  If you are injured while participating in one of our programs or with a properly registered member association of Basketball Manitoba, please review the following information on our insurance policies.
Basketball Manitoba is pleased to offer an accident and liability insurance coverage program for basketball camps hosted in Manitoba.  This extension of our traditional insurance service provided to all member associations, including youth and adult leagues, can now be accessed by all camp directors to help provide coverage to their basketball camps.  The insurance will provide coverage for all camp participants, including players and coaches, in the form of both accident and liability support.  The coverage will also extend to the facility used itself.  More and more facilities require user groups to show proof of insurance to access their property, and this plan will do just that.

Many camps use a waiver form in place of providing insurance coverage.  This is no longer required for those camps that register their program with Basketball Manitoba.  Pricing starts as little as $1 per day per camper.  Most camps operate for a week, so for only $5 per player, you can provide your customers an additional piece of mind while participating in your program.

The accident coverage includes items tied to rehabilitation costs, including doctor-prescribed visits to Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, braces (for daily use), and prescription medicines (not covered by Manitoba Health) that are all tied to an accident sustained at a registered camp. Ambulance coverage is also available, currently in the $300 per call range.  Visits to physiotherapists currently range from $75+ per session.

Camps that obtain the insurance will receive a digital badge for your promotions, including those on the Basketball Manitoba website.

If your Basketball Manitoba registered team is travelling to a destination OUTSIDE of Manitoba for a basketball tournament or exhibition games, please submit this completed form to Basketball Manitoba at least 2 days prior to your departure. By completing this form, we are able to extend the basketball Accident and Liability insurance coverage your team currently has in Manitoba to you outside the province.

To ensure all participants are covered under the Basketball Manitoba Insurance protections, all player eligibility rules remain in place for all out-of-province competitions.

While travelling in Canada, the policy is strictly a “sport accident” policy and therefore, the injury must be sustained while participating in a sanctioned game or practice. Travel insurance is recommended when travelling outside of Manitoba. There is no out-of-country coverage, and it is recommended that you purchase a travel insurance policy.

It is still strongly recommended that all people travelling to the US carry additional travel insurance through carriers such as Blue Cross.

The current Basketball Manitoba membership listing can be found at http://insurance.basketballmanitoba.ca

If a travel permit is not completed at least 2 days prior to departure, the team will not have insurance coverage for that event.  For more information on the Travel Insurance Plan that Basketball Manitoba has, please go to http://insurance.basketballmanitoba.ca

Note: Travel Insurance Coverage is only available to current members of Basketball Manitoba. There is no additional fee associated with submitting this form.

Questions on this form or the insurance program, in general, can be directed to Adam Wedlake by email at adam@basketballmanitoba.ca.

A confirmation will be sent to your email with a summary of your submission for your records.

COMMON QUESTIONS ASKED
REGARDING ACCIDENT INSURANCE

1. WHEN WILL I GET PAID/REIMBURSED?
This is a reimbursement policy.  Due to the processing time involved, payment for the reimbursement of claims may be anywhere from four to six weeks.  If there is indication that further receipts will be submitted, rather than reimburse a claimant for one or two, the insurance company may wait and process a cheque for them all at one time.  Some common reasons for delay in payment are:
i) if the injured athlete has other insurance (this policy is a "second payer" and will come into effect after all other insurance available to the athlete is exhausted);
ii) the address on the claim form for the athlete is incorrect or incomplete;
iii) no physician's referral and receipts have been received;
iv) there is no indication that the initial treatment was received within 30 days of the accident;
v) the claim was submitted after 90 days of the accident date.
Benefits – Excess Medical/Hospital Expense – Accident & Sickness

When as a result of an injury or sickness the insured requires necessary services of a physician, registered nurse, physiotherapist, hospital, x-ray clinic, laboratory, ambulance or emergency medical return to the outbound point of departure, the Insurer will pay the actual expenses incurred not to exceed the maximum sum stated on the individual certificate.

Hospital services shall include all necessary services provided normally by a duly registered and licensed hospital excluding services of a nursing home, rest home, or by other non-hospital institutions.

Coverage is provided only for expenses incurred by Canadian Residents which are in excess of the benefits available under any Canadian Federal or Provincial Hospital and/or Medical Plan regardless of whether or not the insured is enrolled in such a plan.

Blanket Dental Accident Reimbursement

When an injury to whole or sound teeth including filled or restored teeth requires and receives dental treatment commencing within 30 days of the date of the accident the Insurer shall pay for the necessary expenses for such treatment rendered within 52 weeks of the accident.  The following provisions apply:

a)    Any payments made under this section shall not exceed the amount specified in the Schedule of Fees in effect at the time of the accident as published by the Dental Association of the Province in which this document of insurance is issued.

b)    Capped or crowned teeth shall be deemed as whole or sound teeth.

c)    No benefit will be payable for expenses of dental treatment incurred for the cost of replacement, adjustment or repair of artificial teeth or dentures (except as otherwise provided herein), any orthodontic treatment; any dental treatment provided solely for cosmetic or esthetic reasons.

Interruption Insurance

Out of Pocket Expenses:  In the event covered injury or sickness causes an insured’s delay in returning to the point of departure beyond the return date, the Insurer will pay for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses incurred by the insured up to the per diem amount specified in the individual certificate, not to exceed the maximum applicable benefit for all such expenses.

Trip Interruption:  If, after the outbound departure, the insured is obliged to leave the tour upon a physician’s advice due to covered illness or injury, the Insurer will pay for the cost of one-way economy class transportation to rejoin the ongoing tour or to original point of departure.

Repatriation Expense:  In the event of covered death of the insured, occurring after the originating flight date, the Insurer will pay the cost of the actual expense incurred for conveyance of the body and ashes of the insured person, to the outbound point of departure, not to exceed the applicable maximum benefit.

Limitations and Exclusions:

This insurance does not provide expenses incurred directly or indirectly as a result of:
