The University of Manitoba has announced a historic $1 million gift from former Bisons men’s basketball player, business leader and philanthropist John Loewen in support of the Bisons Men’s Basketball program.
The gift is the largest in Bison Sports history and will be directed through a dedicated fund to enhance the student-athlete experience over the next decade. The contribution will support future opportunities, resources and program development for Bisons men’s basketball student-athletes.
Raised in Winnipeg, Loewen remained closely connected to Manitoba sport following his time at the University of Manitoba. He went on to a successful career in business and public service, including leadership roles with Comcheq, now Ceridian, Telpay and Payworks, along with serving as an MLA for Fort Whyte.
Loewen has also made significant contributions as a coach, builder and supporter of sport in Manitoba. He was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2007, became part of the Bisons Walkway of Honour in 2012, and was inducted into the Herd Hoops Club Hall of Fame in January 2026.
The gift reflects Loewen’s long-standing commitment to giving back and helping create opportunities for the next generation. His support will help strengthen the Bisons Men’s Basketball program while providing student-athletes with an improved experience on and off the court.
Basketball Manitoba congratulates John Loewen and the University of Manitoba Bisons on this historic contribution to basketball in Manitoba. The gift represents a major investment in the future of the sport and will leave a lasting impact on student-athletes, coaches, alumni and the broader basketball community.
