The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Men's Basketball Team will host the program’s first-ever Canada West men's basketball semifinal this Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 7:30 pm at the Duckworth Centre, versus the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.
A win on Saturday advances the Wesmen to the Canada West final and secures a berth at the U SPORTS Men's Basketball National Championship in Calgary this March.
Winnipeg earned the right to host after defeating the Calgary Dinos 82-69 in last weekend’s Canada West quarter-final at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen built a 22-point third-quarter lead before holding off a late Calgary push, closing the game with key defensive stops.
Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault credited his team’s competitiveness in the closing minutes.
"I thought our desire to be successful was high enough for us to get a win."
The quarter-final also showcased Winnipeg’s transition game, with the Wesmen posting a 24-2 advantage in fast-break points.
Alberto Gordo led five Wesmen in double figures with 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, along with five assists and three steals. Kato Jaro added 15 points, nine assists, six rebounds, and four steals. Ryan Luke and Elijah Mensah each scored 13, with Luke also pulling down nine rebounds, while Malachi Alexander contributed 10 points.
