Basketball Manitoba has announced its support for the newly released Canadian Sport Policy 2025–2035, a national framework endorsed by Sport Manitoba and Canada Basketball that sets a clear vision for how sport in Canada will be delivered over the next decade. The policy establishes a shared commitment to safe, inclusive, values-driven sport environments and outlines how governments, sport organizations, and communities can work together to ensure all Canadians can grow, excel, and achieve well-being through sport.

The vision of the Canadian Sport Policy – “Working together to enable everyone to grow, excel and achieve wellbeing through sport” – aligns directly with Basketball Manitoba’s long-standing focus on participation, performance pathways, safe sport, and community development. The policy emphasizes creating positive experiences for people of all ages and abilities, ensuring access to quality coaching and leadership, improving equity and inclusion, addressing barriers to participation, and strengthening sport environments at all levels

Key elements of the policy highlighted by Basketball Manitoba include:

  • A national commitment to safe, inclusive, and accessible sport systems, with shared responsibility across governments and sport organizations to uphold safety standards, ethical conduct, and fairness in sport environments.
  • A renewed focus on participation, physical literacy, facility access, and community-centred programming to ensure all Canadians can experience meaningful sport involvement throughout their lives.
  • Support for athlete, coach, and official pathways that emphasize wellbeing, quality leadership, and long-term development, including efforts to retain volunteers and reduce barriers in performance environments.
  • Recognition of sport’s role in advancing social outcomes such as community building, Reconciliation, newcomer inclusion, gender equity, and cultural representation, consistent with consultations conducted across Canada with more than 5,000 participants and 500 sport organizations.

Basketball Manitoba notes that the policy’s emphasis on collaboration reinforces the need for strong alignment across partners at the provincial, territorial, and national levels. This includes coordinated planning with Sport Manitoba, Canada Basketball, schools, municipalities, community clubs, professional sport partners, and Indigenous communities. The policy further outlines expectations for ongoing monitoring and evaluation to ensure accountability and progress through 2035.

Basketball Manitoba, with the endorsement of Sport Manitoba and Canada Basketball, affirms its commitment to implementing the values and objectives of the Canadian Sport Policy 2025–2035 within all programs, operations, and partnerships. The organization will continue to advance safe sport, equitable access, quality leadership, high-performance development, and vibrant community participation across Manitoba.
