Q: A1 attempts a shot for a 3-point field goal. The ball is in the air when the game clock signal sounds for the end of the game (4th quarter). After the signal, B1 commits a foul on A1 who is still airborne. The ball enters the basket. Is the official correct in counting the basket and awarding A1 a free throw.

FIBA rule: 8.5

An interval of play begins:

  • 20 minutes before the game is scheduled to begin.
  • When the game clock signal sounds for the end of the quarter or overtimes.

8.8 If a foul is committed during an interval of play, any eventual free throw(s) shall be administered before the beginning of the following quarter or overtime

10.4 The ball does not become dead and the goal counts if made when:

  • The ball is in flight on a shot for a field goal and:
    • A referee blows their whistle.
    • The game clock signal sounds for the end of the quarter or overtime.
    • The shot clock signal sound

FIBA Interpretation: 8-6

A1 shall be awarded 3 points. B1’s foul on A1 shall be disregarded as it was committed after the end of playing time, unless it is an unsportsmanlike or a disqualifying foul and another quarter or overtime is to follow.
