The Manitoba High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has updated its Return to Play documents tied to the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic that will impact school basketball in January, including the following statement...

JANUARY 7, 2022 STATEMENT: There are many factors that school divisions, or independent school administrations, must navigate during this most recent Public Health order regarding remote learning. In the midst of the current state of affairs, the MHSAA will continue to support school sport through athletic and educational opportunities.

The guidance the MHSAA has received from Public Health and Manitoba Education is that current public health orders allow for extra-curricular school sport activities such as practices and exhibition/league games as an option. With this in mind, and to remain in line with the MHSAA’s Return to School Sport Plan, it is the perspective of MHSAA that school divisions, or independent school administrations, determine how they wish to proceed in terms of participation in school sport for the week of January 10-14, 2022.

As a reminder, public health orders currently prohibit tournaments. Current public health orders are scheduled to expire on January 11, 2022, and the MHSAA will send out additional guidance once new Public Health Orders have been released.

  • Tournaments: As per current Public Health Orders, tournaments are prohibited to take place until at least January 11, 2022. All tournaments scheduled to operate within these new health order timelines are not to operate at any indoor sporting facility in Manitoba.
  • Spectators: The number of spectators at an indoor facility cannot exceed 50% of the usual spectator capacity of the facility or to a maximum of 250 people, whichever is less.
