Brandon University and head coach Novell Thomas has announced the addition of the first recruit for the 2014-15 season in Hamiota, Manitoba product Shayna Mathison.  The Brandon University Bobcats women’s basketball team is in the midst of its best season in 30 years, but that hasn’t stopped head coach Novell Thomas from looking ahead.
“Shayna’s height at 6-foot-2 and her aggressiveness and drive definitely caught my eye,” says Thomas.  “She ended up enrolling in our Bobcat Basketball Academy, where again I got to see her work ethic and see how she has developed over the past two years, so now I am anxious to see what type of player she will become.”

Mathison is a soon to be graduate of Hamiota Collegiate where she has been a member of the Huskies basketball and soccer teams. In the last two seasons she’s helped the Huskies to back to back Provincial A Championships, as well as representing Team Westman at the 2012 Manitoba Summer Games and Team Manitoba at the Western Canadian Basketball Championships.

“What we need to moving forward is a strong presence at centre. Shayna will add depth at that position,” Thomas adds.

Mathison becomes the second Hamiota Collegiate product to join the Bobcats in as many years, following in the footsteps of freshman guard Keegan Robinson, who leads this season’s Bobcats squad in free-throw percentage and sits third in three-pointers.
