This past weekend, Canada sent three teams to New York City for the inaugural FIBA 3x3 World Tour Master Competition.  The three teams that qualified from their respective 3x3 Canada Quest tournament in Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal were well represented in this 15 team tournament.

The tournament took place in Queens, NY at Citi Field (home of the New York Mets).  The 15 teams were separated into three pools of five – with international teams from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Moscow, Belize and different parts of US.  In order to qualify into the knockout round (quarter finals) of the tournament, the teams needed to place in the top two in the pool and the two best third place finishers.

Canada had a strong showing during the round robin (Edmonton 3-1, Montreal 3-1, Toronto 2-2), and all three teams made it into the quarter finals.  Both Montreal and Toronto played a tough game losing their matches in overtime to Moscow and Denver respectively.  Edmonton handled their game against Denver with ease and beat them by a score of 21-12, which earned them a berth into the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Final in Miami, Florida on September 22-23, 2012.

The strong performances by the three Canadian teams certainly were not overlooked.  Throughout the tournament, organizers from FIBA, coaches from other Federations and players from other teams were commenting on how well Canada was represented!  Kudos to all our players for their hard fought effort!

Congratulations to the team of Jordan, Joel, Dom and Jarred representing Edmonton for earning a berth at the FIBA 3x3 World Tour finals in Miami next month!  We’ll certainly be cheering for them as they take on 3x3 teams from around the world!
