The Manitoba Bisons women’s basketball team prepares for the upcoming 2011-12 season by announcing a new recruit. Bisons women’s basketball head coach Pam Danis, embarking on her 11th season with Manitoba, is pleased to announce the commitment of Melanie Edel to the Bison program for the 2011-12 season. The 5’11” forward hails from Morris, MB and named an All-Manitoba Basketball First Team, the first recipeint of the MSSA's Ron Meyers Leadership Award plus recipient of Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Scholarship in 2010-11
Edel, 17, is a 5’11” power forward that completed her high school career at Morris School and excelled in both basketball and volleyball in 2010-11. In basketball, the Morris, MB native was captain of the Mavericks basketball team while being named as 2010-11 All-Manitoba First Team along with Graduating All-Star and capturing the inaugural Ron Myers Leadership/Basketball Scholarship. She scored 55 points in league final and averaged over 20 points a game. In addition, she was named player of the game in the Graduating All-Star match in 2011; Neepawa tournament all-star in 2011 while recipient of 2011 Premier’s Youth Volunteer Service Award plus named 2011 Manitoba School Boards Association Student Citizenship Award (Region 2).
Along with basketball, Edel had a successful 2010-11 campaign in volleyball. She was 2010-11 Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Scholarship Award recipient. Edel was part of the team that captured the Zone 4 Championship and the Morris Volleyball Tournament. The duo-sport athlete was named a Tri-Star rural athlete of the week, Players Choice Award at ‘AA’ Volleyball Provincials and was also selected as an MVA Graduating All-Star.
Danis commented, “We are very excited to have Mel join our program. Being a multi-sport athlete, she will have the athletic ability to develop into one of our go-to players over the next couple of years. She is an extremely hard worker on and off the court, we look forward to the contributions she will make in both areas.”
In the past for basketball, Edel was part of 2010 Basketball Manitoba Ladies Summer League Champions (with Bisons), 2009 and 2010 All-Star selection at Souris and Killarney Basketball Tournament and member of the Manitoba Provincial Basketball Team in 2008. She is also was on the honour roll with a 95% average (on honour roll since grade seven) this season and has done numerous volunteer activities in the Morris community.
