captains for the upcoming 20010-11 season. Tenth year Bison women’s
basketball head coach Pam Danis has three captains for this season with
guard Kayla Klassen and forwards Lauren Mortier and Mubo Ilelaboye all
wearing the ‘C’ for the first time for Manitoba. Second year Bison men’s
basketball head coach Kirby Schepp has veteran Eric Garcia as the
captain for the second consecutive season.
Kayla Klassen will serve as Bison captain for the time in her career. The fifth year Arts student-athlete finished tied for first on the team and 22nd in Canada West scoring with 12.1 points per game, tied for first in 3-points made in Canada West at 2.6 per game, tenth in conference steals at 2.3 avg. and tops on team and 14th in Canada West in 3-point shooting at 34.5% in the 2009-10 season.
In addition, forwards Lauren Mortier and Mubo Ilelaboye are captains for their first time at Manitoba. Mortier is a fourth year Asper School of Business student-athlete was fifth in team scoring with a 7.3 avg., fourth in team with 26 steals and third on the Bisons in free throws at 70.7% last season. Ilelaboye is a fourth year Human Ecology student-athlete who was fourth in team scoring with a 11.3 avg., first on the team in field goal percentage at 44.7%, tied for second on team in rebounds at 5.1 per game and played over 26 minutes per game in 2009-10 season.
Danis commented, “All three are committed to being leaders on and off the court. Each bring special qualities to the team and combined will be a solid leadership group.”
Eric Garcia is in his second consecutive year as captain with the Bisons. The fifth year Kinesiology and Recreational Management student-athlete was third in team scoring with a 13.3 avg., fifth in Canada West with 4.3 assists per game, sixth in conference steals at 2.3 per game, third in Canada West 3-point shooting at 44.4% and seventh in conference minutes played at 34.0 per game during the 2009-10 season. The Winnipeg native also is a three-time CIS Academic All-Canadian (2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10).
Schepp said, “Eric lends a veteran presence to our team and has already shown his leadership skills as captain last season. He will be a big part of the team throughout this season.”
