It is with great sadness that Basketball Manitoba shares the news of the passing of long-time basketball coach Larry Sawchuk of Winnipeg.  Larry was a very active high school coach at Miles Mac Collegiate, with the Manitoba Provincial Team Program and the University of Winnipeg in the 1980's through to the early 1990's.

Larry passed
away at the age of 56 years at St. Boniface Hospital.  A Memorial Service will be held on
Thursday, May 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street
at Inkster.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Larry's family and friends.

LARRY MICHAEL SAWCHUK

It is with heavy hearts Larry's mom and sister
have to announce the sudden and untimely passing of Larry Michael
Sawchuk on May 22, 2009 at the age of 56 years. Larry leaves to mourn
his mother Jean Sawchuk, sister Debbie Fedak and husband Brian, fellow
teachers, students and dear friends. He was predeceased by his father
Michael Sawchuk and grandmothers, Mary Sawchuk and Pauline Demski. In
his short time on earth, Larry achieved many accomplishments in spite
of his struggle with arthritis.

Larry graduated from Transcona
Collegiate. He attended the University of Manitoba obtaining his
Bachelor of Arts Degree. He then went on and took two years of law but
had to relinquish that dream due to his illness. Later, not to be held
down, Larry decided teaching would be his new passion. Larry obtained
his Masters Degree in Teaching at the University of Duluth in
Minnesota. Only Larry could have written a thesis on basketball.

Coaching the Varsity Men's Basketball team and the Provincial team was
a privilege and honour to him. Larry taught at Miles Macdonell
Collegiate for the past 26 years. He had a passion for teaching math
and felt that all students deserved to be taught in a consistent and
fair manner. During his tenure at high school, he coached basketball
and golf. These, along with curling, were his favourite sports.

Larry
would not allow his disability to get in the way of his ability to play
golf, even managing to get a hole-in-one at Rossmere Country Club.
Larry also looked after his mom with the same passion and depth as he
did with everything else in life. He will be sorely missed.

Special
thanks to the Emergency staff at the St. Boniface Hospital.

A
celebration of Larry's life will take place on Thursday, May 28, 2009
at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street at Inkster.
Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
the Arthritis Society.
