Rosemary Mills transfers to Brandon University

BRANDON, MB – Coach Jaime Hickson is pleased to announce that Rosemary Mills has declared Brandon University as her institution and basketball program of choice. The twenty-year old, 5’10” shooting guard from Winnipeg will be joining the Lady ‘Cats Basketball roster this fall and entering the Bachelor of Arts Honors Degree program in Psychology at BU.

Mills competed with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen for the 2007-2008 season and withdrew herself from the program the following spring. She spent the following season reflecting, studying, working and discovering that she wasn’t done with basketball yet.

“The time away gave me some insight, and made me want to return to play for different reasons then I was playing for before,” says Mills. “I'm extremely competitive and love to win, but now I'm playing because I want to, and not because I'm expected to.”

When asked why she chose BU she replied, “If I didn't think Brandon had the potential to be one of the most competitive teams in the CIS, then I wouldn’t have committed to their program. By filling a few missing pieces within the team our consistency will do nothing but improve, and we can ultimately win more games. And even though not many teams have been on the losing end of a game against Brandon in the last few years, I do recall being on the losing end for back-to-back games to the Bobcats. I've seen the unity and strength of this team at its best moments, and it was impressive. I want to be a part of the next steps forward.”

Head Coach Jaime Hickson declares, “We are very thrilled to have Rosemary join our team.  She adds height, range and immediate scoring with defense in the guard positions. She likes to attack as much as she likes to create for others and has a strong will and ambition to win.  We need scorers who are multi-dimensional threats on the perimeter and she fits the bill.”

“Rosemary, along with our other recruits this season, breathes in new life to our program.  Her love for the game, for success and shear hatred for losing will elevate the performance of her surrounding teammates. We need this type of talent infusion if we’re going to take the next step forward and start winning games.”

Glenlawn Post the Latest Edition to the Lady Bobcats

BRANDON, MB - Glenlawn Collegiate Institute graduate Kristen Young will be suiting up for the Brandon University Women’s Basketball team this fall.  The 6’1” post player will add defense and scoring to the Lady ‘Cats inside game.

Glenlawn Head Coach Bryan Kornberger shares his excitement at Kristen’s selection in praising her potential, “Kristen plays defense like no other, she was the best shot blocker in the province this past season, with an uncanny knack to block the shot, catch the ball or tip it to a team mate. She is a good strong defensive rebounder and can attack in the low post both facing, or with her back to the basket.” Kornberger continues, “this past season Kristen averaged 10 points per game, 13 rebounds per game, four blocked shots per game and three assists per game, with a 65% shooting average.”

Head Coach Jaime Hickson agrees. “I think Kristen has a great opportunity to further develop her skills to where she can become a threatening competitor in the CIS.  She has a solid foundation and we will look at developing her physicality and aggressiveness further this season.  We are excited to be adding immediate interior defense and presence.”

"I chose BU because of its reputation for excellence. I have the opportunity to play at the highest level and get a quality education." says Young. "I felt at home when I was here and family support is important to me. It just feels right."

Young’s high school performance earned her an invitation to play in the MBCA graduating All-Star game and was a member of Basketball Manitoba’s Developmental Provincial Teams in 2005 and 2006.

Hickson is also pleased to announce that local talent Alanna Johnston, of Vincent Massey Collegiate, will also be joining the roster as a team red shirt (or practice player). Johnston has committed herself to the program, hoping to build on her skills and experience in preparation for a CIS basketball career with the Bobcats. Hickson explains, “Alanna has great deal of potential and learns quickly. We feel that by giving her a year of experience in a higher tempo, physically challenging environment; we can best prepare her for our 2010-2011 season. We want to build on her strength, physical presence and confidence in attacking and defending her check one-on-one.”

Seneca guard signs letter of intent with BU

BRANDON, MB – The Lady Bobcats are pleased to announce the commitment of Hailey Toner to the Women’s Basketball program. Toner, a transfer student from Seneca College will join the line-up with three remaining years of eligibility.

Bobcats Women's Basketball Coach Jaime Hickson believes that Toner, a 5-foot-6 athletic scorer and a leader with a confident and demanding personality, is another missing piece of the Bobcat puzzle.

“From my first conversation with Hailey, I knew she was Bobcat material," says Hickson. "She has a fighter’s mentality, is talented, ambitious and works as hard as we do – a great fit. As a guard and pseudo-point guard, I like that she speaks her mind, plays aggressively and communicates well, both on and off the court.”

“I’m really excited about moving to Brandon to play basketball. I feel good about my decision and know that I’ll not just be joining a great basketball program, but I’ll also be joining the Bobcat family," says Toner. "I really like the fact that the coaches and athletes are close and very supportive both athletically and academically. BU is a great fit for me.”

“I think her trip out here last week was critical for us," says Hickson. "It gave Hailey an opportunity to meet the team, get a run in as well as a chance to investigate my coaching strategies and philosophies. I like that about Hailey, she had standards and if you don’t meet them, then forget it!”

Provincial
champ Rebecca Funk commits to Brandon
University

BRANDON, MB – Brandon University is pleased to announce that
AAAA 2009 Provincial Champion point guard Rebecca Funk has committed to the BU
Women’s Basketball Team. The 5-foot-7 Vincent Massey Collegiate point guard
signed her letter of intent this weekend in Winnipeg at the MBCA All-Manitoba Banquet and
All-Star Game.

Funk is an honor roll
student and former provincial team athlete who most recently received a junior
achievement award: “Company of the Year” as President of her company, Gogee.
Rebecca is also a member of her Chamber of Commerce
committee.

“Rebecca is very excited
about coming to Brandon," states Vincent Massey Head Coach
Stacy Hawash. "She is a leader on and off the floor. Sees the floor well and
distributes it to teammates. Can shoot the 3 as well as take it to the
hole.”

“We are excited to have
Rebecca join our squad," says BU Women's Basketball Head Coach Jaime Hickson.
"Her natural talent and abilities suit the FIBA game, which means she likes to
run, push the ball, attack and shoot three’s. Becca spent last summer playing on
a club team in Argentina where she flourished in the
high-tempo game. She’s ready for the next level and we’re thrilled it’s going to
be with us as a Bobcat.”

Rebecca spent five weeks in
the summer of 2008 in Buenos
Aires, Argentina playing basketball with the
Velez Club. “Playing at the international level taught me many things," she
says, "but the greatest lesson I learned was how to play like you want it. And
if you play like you want it, you're going to get it.  I worked with several
national team athletes and coaches who made it one of the best experiences of my
life.”

“I chose BU to pursue my
degree and to play basketball because I felt like I would be a good fit in the
program, but most of all I wanted to play for a coach who believed in me and
wanted me to play for her," Rebecca continues. "It's important that you surround
yourself with people who have faith in you”.

Rebecca to Brandon

RD
Parker post adds height to Hickson’s roster

BRANDON, MB – 6-foot-0 post Chantel Gaslard of Thompson, Manitoba declared herself a Bobcat this
weekend signing her official letter of intent with the Brandon University
Women’s Basketball program.

Last summer, Chantel moved
to Winnipeg
where she improved upon her basketball skills as a member of the Junior Bison
Club program.  Her hard work and sacrifice has paid off and Brandon University
Head Coach Jaime Hickson is pleased to have Chantel become a Bobcat.

“Chantel is a post player
with established footwork and handles," says Hickson. "Not only that but she can
run, take and give contact and finish around the hoop. For a high school athlete
she has a strong foundation and Coach Gillis has done a great job preparing her
for the next level."

Chantel boasts many
athletic awards in her graduating season as an RD Parker Collegiate Trojan under
Head Coach Sara Gillis:

  • RD Parker Tournament
    All-Star

  • SJR Tournament
    All-Star

  • AAA Tri-Star Athlete of the
    Week, February 10, 2009

  • AAA Provincial Championship
    All-Star

  • AAA Provincial Championship
    Players Choice Award

  • A/AA/AAA MBCA All-Manitoba
    2nd Team

Gaslard is excited about
moving to Brandon this fall, saying, “I chose BU because
it was the right fit for me. I really like the fact that the class sizes are
smaller, which seems to be more beneficial for any student. The bonus is being
part of a team that has a good bond. They created a really welcoming atmosphere
for me when I visited and now I can’t wait to be a part of it. Next season, I am
looking forward to learning a lot about basketball and becoming a better
player.”

“Chantel is an exceptional
basketball athlete," adds Coach Gillis. "The strength, consistency and maturity
of her play in the second half of this past season definitely shows that she is
ready for college ball. Once she gets into the next level of play, learns a
little more and gains more confidence at that level, her athleticism is going to
bring her quite far; she is by no means near her limits at this
time.”

Please join us in welcoming
Chantel to Brandon

our University Program.  Alyssa has been attending individual sessions
once a week since early Sept. She is committed to play and make an
immediate impact with our Program in Sept. 2009.Oak Park has done a
great job developing female basketball players in the Province of

Women's Basketball Program”, said Tanya McKay, University of Winnipeg
Wesmen Women’s Basketball Head Coach.

an outstanding basketball player but an outstanding person, student and
citizen.  Alyssa will be captain of the Oak Park Raiders this season, a
season which holds great potential for the Raiders.  A tireless worker,
Alyssa accepts that with talent comes the responsibility of hard work
