GENEVA (FIBA) - The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has announced that the draw for the 2008 Olympic Basketball
Tournaments will take place on 26th April 2008 in the Wukesong Indoor
Stadium, in Beijing, China. The draw, which will determine the composition of the two groups of six
teams for both the Men's and the Women's Olympic Basketball
Tournaments, will be held on the occasion of the Beijing 2008
Basketball Test Event for Women (participants: Australia, China, Cuba,
Korea, New Zealand and USA) that will take place from 19th to 26th
April 2008 in the Wukesong Indoor Stadium.
Olympic Basketball Tournament for Men
The following nine men's teams have already booked their tickets for the Olympic Basketball Tournament for Men that will take place in Beijing, China, from 10th to 24th August 2008: Angola, Argentina, Australia, China, Iran, Lithuania, Russia, Spain and USA.
The remaining three men's berths for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will be decided in the 12-team FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men to be played from 14th to 20th July 2008, in a country to be determined by FIBA at its Central Board Meeting in Chicago (USA) on 8th and 9th December 2007. The organizers and venues of the tournament will be decided amongst the two candidatures received from Athens, Greece, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The participating teams in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men are: Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Cape Verde, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Korea, Lebanon, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Slovenia.
Olympic Basketball Tournament for Women
The following seven women's teams have qualified for the Olympic Basketball Tournament for Women that will take place in Beijing, China, from 9th to 23rd August 2008: Australia, China, Korea, Mali, New Zealand, Russia and USA.
The remaining five women's berths for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will be decided in the 12-team FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women to be played from 9th to 15th June 2008, in a country to be determined by FIBA at its Central Board Meeting in Chicago (USA) on 8th and 9th December 2007. The organizers and venues of the tournament will be decided amongst the two candidatures received from Tokyo, Japan, and Madrid, Spain.
