Special Olympics Manitoba has announced it is seeking volunteers to support its upcoming School Programs Basketball event taking place during the daytime on Tuesday, February 4 at Sport Manitoba.

The School Programs initiative provides inclusive sport opportunities for students across Manitoba, helping promote physical activity, teamwork, confidence, and belonging through basketball.

Community members who are interested in volunteering are encouraged to connect directly with the program organizer.

Special Olympics Manitoba has announced two new recruitment opportunities connected to its upcoming Junior Program – Basketball, launching in January 2026 at Sport Manitoba in Winnipeg. The program is designed for teens and young adults aged 13–21 with an intellectual disability who want to build confidence, learn fundamental basketball skills, and prepare for future participation in community or competitive sports pathways.

The Junior Basketball Program will run for 10 weeks, beginning in January 2026, with weekly sessions on Mondays from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The training model focuses on skill development, teamwork, and social engagement, offering athletes a supportive environment where they can grow, connect, and enjoy the game. Participation is offered at no cost, and space is limited.

Special Olympics Manitoba has also announced a call for volunteers to support the program. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age, and a Criminal Record Check is required. General sports knowledge is considered an asset, but no prior experience is required. Volunteers will assist with weekly sessions and play an important role in helping athletes build confidence, develop skills, and stay engaged in a positive sport setting.

Special Olympics Manitoba's School Programs Basketball Events is hosting two days of basketball in February at the Sport Manitoba Courts and is in need of volunteers to help out!  

When: Tuesday, February 21st and Wednesday, February 22nd, 2023

Volunteer Shift Time: 9:15am-2:30pm (actual event runs from 10am-2pm)

Where: Sport Manitoba Courts, 145 pacific Avenue, Winnipeg, MB

What: Volunteer duties include facilitating basketball skills and drills, refereeing, set-up and clean up

WATCH: Global's Austin Siragusa introduces Head Coach of Special Olympics Manitoba Basketball Breanne Nichol as Coaching Manitoba's choice for September's Coach of the Month.

Breanne Nichol has coached co-ed special Olympics basketball for Team Manitoba for the past 2 years.

She says it was the passion her players showed that earned them gold at the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.

The Special Olympics Manitoba 'In the Schools' program gets the school year bouncing with two basketball events taking place at the end of November.   First up, athletes in grades Kindergarten to 8 will participate in Basketball Skills Day at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre on Thursday, December 8, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM.  The day will see plenty of basketball skill building as well as meeting new friends from different schools around Winnipeg and the surrounding area.  Last year over 80 athletes from 13 different schools attended this event with lots of fun had by all.

The grades 9-12 High School Basketball 3 on 3 Day will run at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre (400 Spence St, Winnipeg), Wednesday November 30, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM.  This is an exciting day where teams compete in 3 on 3 half court games as representatives of their respective High Schools.  This event is quickly growing and is expected to have multiple teams from over 10 High Schools taking part.

A big THANK YOU goes out to the host venues and volunteers for which without you these events would not be able to happen.

The Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials (MABO) supports the day with officials for the 3on3 event and Basketball Manitoba's Coaches (Dan Becker, Randy Kusano, Ian Dickey and Donovan Gayle) will be getting involved with Special O at some of their basketball camps in the coming months.

In the Schools is a school based program that allows students with an intellectual disability to build confidence in sport through quality training and competition; laying the foundation for an active, healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in sport.

Special Olympics Manitoba is seeking a head coach and assistant coaches to take over the Thunderbolts basketball program in Winnipeg. People must be able to commit 2 hours once a week and a few competitions on weekends throughout the year. Some experience required, but not necessary. Orientation and training is provided.  Background check/screening is part of the application process. The MTS Future First program has donated $25,000 towards Special Olympics Manitoba youth programming! MTS employees recently joined 70 students from 10 different schools at the In The Schools basketball skills day. Special Olympics Manitoba has announced it will be hosting over 70 athletes from 7 schools across Manitoba in its In the Schools High School 3 on 3 Basketball day taking place on Thursday December 11, 2014.  This event will be hosted at Grant Park High School and will include skill development sessions in the morning and 3 on 3 half court competition in the afternoon.

Congratulations to Team Manitoba on their recent success at the Special Olympics National Championships held in Vancouver, BC!  Manitoba proudly brought home a Silver Medal in basketball from the event.

Team Manitoba basketball was a very well prepared team for the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Vancouver. All the hard work the team put in, paid off!

  • vs BC Grizzlies, 21-8 Win
  • vs Alberta Grizzlies, 42-8 Win
  • vs BC (Langley), 20-18 Win ***Langley's first loss in three years***

  • Gold medal game: vs BC (Langley), 20-14 Loss 
Team Manitoba basketball athletes and coaches had a wonderful experience in Vancouver and they can't wait for the next National Summer Games.

Players from The Junior Bison’s Basketball Club were challenged by the Special Olympics Manitoba Provincial Basketball Team to help prepare them for the upcoming national championships being held July 8th to 12th in Vancouver.  The local Special Olympics team is comprised of 10 dedicated athletes and three coaches who will be representing Manitoba for the first time at the national games.










Athletes from both teams share a passion and commitment to the sport of basketball and will benefit from playing against each other.  The experience will reach beyond the sphere of basketball to empower individuals, change attitudes and build communities.

The Special Olympics Manitoba Provincial Basketball Team is looking for local teams to play this spring as it prepares for its national championships this July in Vancouver.  The local Special Olympics team is made up of 10 (9 males and 1 female) of mostly adults, representing Manitoba for the first time at National Games this summer.  As their ability is higher than the other Special Olympics teams in Manitoba, the team is seeking other challenging teams for them to play.



Dates:   May 1- June 26th.
Times: Thursdays, 6:30- 7:30pm
Location:  Burton Cummings Community Club – 960 Arlington

If you are part of a team, or know of a team that would like to come out and challenge the Special Olympics Manitoba Provincial Team, please contact Susan Lamboo at 925-5626 or slamboo@specialolympics.mb.ca.   The Varsity level would be a good fit, but open to all.

The 2014 Special Olympics North Dakota State Basketball Tournament had 460 athletes on 46 different teams competing in Minot, North Dakota. Team Manitoba made the trip over the border to participate in the tournament (top division). Team Manitoba played their hearts out and finished in 3rd place!
The trip was an excellent practice in preparation for the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Vancouver, July 8th – 12th. Head coach Hong Thai was very happy with the experience of the team taking a road trip together and getting some tough competition under their belt.
“I’m extremely proud of my group! We accomplished a lot at the tournament and it couldn’t have happened without the co-operation of our whole team,” said Thai.
Team Manitoba came home with a lot of confidence built up after winning their final game of the tournament against the Dickinson Dominators (41-21)!

BRANDON, MB – Brandon University athletics will provide free admission to Westman Special Olympic athletes on Saturday, January 8 as the Bobcats play host to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.  There are over 200 Special Olympics athletes in the Westman region who compete in numerous sports including floor hockey, swimming, and track and field. All Special Olympic athletes are invited to come down and cheer on the Bobcats at the BU Gymnasium for free and take part in some unique games including a free-throw competition.
