NABA Juvenile Team
By Rizza Valera

It was a rough start for NABA Winnipeg Basketball teams this year but once we got it going with two teams confirmed who trained hard and put a good fight.  With only 7 - 8 players on each team running out of oxygen against the teams they played they still held it together.

The Bantams level, who are first time players to NABA were shocked on the competitiveness that this tournament brings on to the Filipino community of North America.  Though they didn’t place, they are willing to come back and level up against the teams they come on the court against.  (Top 2 pictures, Bantam 2019)

Our Juvenile team found themselves in the quarter-finals, the second day which meant back to back games leaving them breathless in their against host city Washington DC.  If you were there, you would have walked away the first half down by 15 but having watched to the end, these boys fought and caught up to Washington.  The Juve’s came back but wasn’t enough to keep going losing by 6 points in the end.

Overall, both teams held their heads high and showed them that Winnipeg may have lost the battle but will continue to fight in the war.  ‘Til next years NABA tournament, Winnipeg will be back!

The 2018 FBA NA delegation of Winnipeg was in Montreal over the Labor Day weekend at the annual basketball event that involved similar delegations from cities from all over North America.

Congratulations to Miss Christia Mae Castor for winning the Miss FBA NA 2018, a title won by a Winnipeger 3 years in a row now.

Congratulations go out to the Girls that won their respective Championship!  The Winnipeg team in the Open Ladies division made its way to the championship final along with the Men's Master Division that also played very well and almost won it all

Thank you to all other divisions that represented Winnipeg very well and continued the tradition of our city at these events.  Thank you to all coaches, assistant coaches, parents, grandparents, sponsors, volunteers and the PBA Committee.

More information on the championships can be found at https://www.fba-na.com/

Plans are already underway for Chicago 2019!

On Labour Day weekend (September 2-3, 2017), FBA Winnipeg organized a very large delegation of athletes, coaches, committee members, directors, families and friends to the host city of Detroit, Michigan to compete in the annual Intercity Filipino Basketball Association of North America (FBA-NA) basketball tournament. The FBA Winnipeg army filled up 2 team buses, while others flew in and some even drove 24 hours south of the border to attend the event.

Nearly 100 teams from across the US and Canada competed in 12 different divisions for basketball glory, bragging rights and a chance at taking home Gold.

The weekend started off on the right foot with the Opening Ceremonies where Winnipeg's own Patricia Mae Ocampo was crowned Miss FBA-NA 2017 over all the other cities.

FBA Winnipeg brought 12 divisions ranging from the Mosquitoes division (co-ed 2008/09) all the way up to the Masters (1974 and up). Of those 12 teams, 7 teams were able to make it through to the finals and brought home some hardware. Here are the results of those 7 teams...

The teams success would not be possible without the support of our sponsors Jur Urbano, Gil Salunga of Maples Insurance, Randy Viray of RVFS, Rhomy Munoz of Munoz Silk Screen Printing and Loreto Opinga of Loralee Apparel

Team Winnipeg is now looking forward to next year's tournament in Montreal Quebec at a chance to defend their title as well as another shot at bringing home more gold.

A number of Winnipeg based tams attended the NABA Championships over the Labour Day long weekend in Manheim, Pennsylvania.  Rizza Valera who helped organize the local teams has provided this summary and a number of images below...

______________________________________

Training from Spring into summer these boys dedicated there time and devotion to basketball.  Winnipeg NABA took 5 teams to represent at the annual 30th NABA tournament held in Manheim, PA.

Tykes, a young group of boys battling the courts in NABA was shocked at the skill the other teams showed up with although they did not give up they played hard and determined to get a basket.  Starting at this age only grooms them to a stronger player in the future.

The Peewee division consisted of 17 teams to conquer to get that trophy.   This group of boys, also new to NABA (Coached by Eric Fernandez) are tough but the competition that weekend was tougher having played against, Central Jersey, Toronto, Vaughn and New York.  We hope they set their mind to playing again and determined to get a trophy from this tournament in the future.

Having found out Coach Riley had fourteen teams in the Bantam division made it tough from the start.  This team had lots of skill, speed and height although when we got into the court, we came short a point or 2 to win the game which makes it hard to swallow the defeat.  They fell behind in the first half but they pulled themselves out but wasn't enough to get the win.  Overall they did an great job representing Winnipeg.  They are a tough group to beat.

Juniors had a dozen teams to beat, again each game played was short of 1-2 points for the win.  It got heated on the court at times but refs kept it cool.  It's tough to really want it and just miss it by a point or 2.  There's always next year boys as Coach Jai would say.

Coach Angel gave his farewell speech to these young men at the beginning of the tournament to concentrate on his sons team for the future.  The best thing happen was a farewell championship trophy these boys gave to him from this tournament.  It wasn't easy getting through 3 buzzer beaters, an overtime game and such tough/rough competition from the 7 teams they had to play to get the gold.  CONGRATULATIONS BOYS WELL DESERVED!!

Many thanks to our sponsors, parents, players and especially to the coaches for spending the time with these boys.  They couldn't have done it without all of you!

We can do this again next year NABA MONTREAL 2018!
