University of Manitoba Bisons men's basketball has announced the commitment of Bruno Van Bewer, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from College Jeanne-Sauve and one of Manitoba's top high school scorers.
Van Bewer joins the Bisons after an outstanding high school career in which he averaged 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists per game. He was named an SCAC All-Star from 2022 to 2026 and was ranked No. 9 in the province by the Winnipeg Free Press. He also earned recognition as a standout player with Team Manitoba at the 2025 Canada Games and has competed with 204 Elite.
In addition to his on-court success, Van Bewer has demonstrated strong leadership as a team captain and has maintained an honour roll average of 85 per cent in the classroom. He also takes pride in his identity as a Red River Metis and Francophone athlete.
Bisons head coach Kirby Schepp said Van Bewer brings a strong mix of scoring ability, athleticism, and leadership to the program.
"We are pleased to add a dynamic scorer in Bruno," said Schepp. "As one of the leaders of last summer's Canada Games team, his athleticism and ability to shoot the ball give him all the tools to become a strong university player."
For Van Bewer, the commitment marks the realization of a long-standing goal.
"I remember when I was younger, I went to a Bisons game as a Junior Bison and said to myself that I wanted to be like them," said Van Bewer. "Now I have the opportunity to play under Coach Schepp while staying home and competing in front of my family and friends."
The addition of Van Bewer continues the Bisons' efforts to build with high-level Manitoba talent as the program looks ahead to the future.
