Basketball Manitoba is excited to announce the details of its 15th annual 'Super Coaches Clinic', presented by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, scheduled for Friday, October 25, 2024. This year's event will be offered online.
The clinic will run at the same time as the province-wide 'SAGE' in-service day. The registration deadline is 12 noon on Thursday, October 24, 2024.

Drew Hanlen - Pure Sweat Basketball
Drew Hanlen has become a renowned name in the world of basketball, recognized for his tireless dedication and ability to elevate players’ performance to new heights. Beginning his journey as a standout college player at Belmont University, Hanlen led his team with his exceptional shooting, achieving a remarkable 48.3% three-point percentage during his senior season. His determination and discipline were evident early on, with a commitment to honing his craft through relentless practice and training. This work ethic laid the foundation for his future success, both as a player and as one of the most sought-after basketball trainers globally. Alongside training elite NBA players like Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, and Bradley Beal, Hanlen’s content and programs have reached millions, with his influence extending across 91 countries and 100 million total views.
In the hyper-competitive world of professional basketball, Hanlen's training methods focus on game-speed development, a vital but often overlooked component of success. Over the past decade, he has worked with some of the NBA's brightest stars, helping refine their skills and transform them into top-tier talents. Hanlen's philosophy of "getting better every day" has been instrumental in shaping the careers of players like Tatum and Embiid, with whom he has been working since their early teens. His behind-the-scenes approach, focusing on providing athletes with the extra edge they need, has cemented his role as an essential figure in the lives of the basketball elite. For Hanlen, it’s all about helping players exceed their expectations and achieve the success they’ve always dreamed of.
Dave Smart, widely regarded as Canada's most successful college basketball coach, was named Head Coach of the Pacific men's basketball program in March 2024. Before this, he served as Assistant Coach at Texas Tech, where he helped the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament. Smart is best known for his legendary tenure at Carleton University, where he amassed 656 wins over 18 seasons, including 13 U SPORTS National Championships and 11 OUA Conference titles. He holds a remarkable 591-48 record in U SPORTS competition and was named U SPORTS Coach of the Year a record 10 times.
Beyond his collegiate success, Smart has been involved with the Canadian national basketball teams, serving as an assistant coach for the Senior Men’s National Team. He helped lead Canada to a third-place finish at the FIBA Americas Championship and played a key role in their Olympic Qualifying efforts. His teams at Carleton also recorded impressive wins against several top NCAA programs during summer tours. Smart has a reputation for producing professional-level talent and has also been involved in consulting roles for the Ottawa Senators NHL team and as general manager of the Ottawa BlackJacks in the Canadian Elite Basketball League.
He is the current Head Coach of the University of the Pacific Tigers men's basketball team, which competes at the NCAA Division 1 level in the West Coast Conference.
Rick is a highly respected figure in the Manitoba basketball community, having been involved since 1977. With over 30 years of coaching and close to 50 years of officiating experience in Brandon, he is well-known for his contributions to the sport. As a player, he spent three years with the Brandon University Bobcats, where he won the Rookie of the Year award in 1978. He was later inducted into the BU Bobcat Wall of Fame in the Community Leadership category (2006) and again as part of the 1979-80 Bobcat team (2018). His officiating career includes numerous Provincial Championships, USPORTS Championships, as well as nine years in professional leagues, highlighting his significant impact at various competitive levels. This upcoming season marks his 45th year as an official at the USPORTS level.
As a retired FIBA official, Rick participated in prestigious international events, including the Nike Hoops Summit (Orlando, FL, USA - 1997), the Jones Cup (Taiwan - 1997), an Olympic qualifying tournament (Havana, CUBA - 1999) , two Pan-Am Games (Winnipeg, CAN - 1999 and Santo Domingo, DR - 2003), the FISU Games (Beijing, CHINA - 2001), and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. In addition to his officiating roles, he has served as a clinician and evaluator (Referee Coach) at local, provincial, and national levels. In 2014, his dedication to basketball officiating in Canada earned him the John A. (Wink) Willox Award from the Canadian Association of Basketball Officials (CABO), recognizing his lifetime commitment to the sport.
Kirby Schepp - University of Manitoba Men's Basketball
Bisons men's basketball head coach Kirby Schepp is entering his 16th season leading the team in the 2024-25 season, having coached over 50 different teams throughout his career. Under his guidance, the Bisons have reached the post-season in 11 of the last 14 years, including a remarkable streak of ten consecutive seasons from 2014 to 2024. Schepp has also led the team to four Canada West Final Four appearances and holds a cumulative coaching record of 153-131 in Canada West play, nearing the program record. His achievements include a historic 18-2 regular season finish in 2022-23, which earned him his second Coach of the Year honour with Bison Sports.
In addition to his collegiate coaching, Schepp has been involved with the Canadian Men's National Team Program for over a decade, contributing to several medal-winning teams at international events. He achieved significant success, including a bronze medal at the 2010 World 17U Championships and a gold medal with the Junior National Team in 2017. Notably, he led Canada to its first men's basketball medal at the Commonwealth Games, securing a silver in 2018. Schepp has also coached emerging NBA talents such as Andrew Wiggins and Dillon Brooks. A graduate of the University of Winnipeg and the University of Victoria, he has extensive experience in high school and club coaching, and he is recognized as a NCCP Master Learning facilitator, having trained numerous coaches over the years.

HISTORY & PAST PRESENTERS
The Basketball Manitoba Super Coaches Clinic was formed under the partnership of the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association, the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba with Basketball Manitoba. The first clinic was offered in 2009 at the University of Winnipeg and has alternated between there and the University of Manitoba ever since. The clinic averages over 300 coaches in attendance annually and is the largest coaches clinic in Manitoba and the largest basketball coaches clinic in Canada!
