All 17 CW basketball schools including the Manitoba Bisons, Brandon Bobcats and Winnipeg Wesmen basketball teams will be converging on Alberta this weekend in a new, single-knockout style of postseason play.

CALGARY - There's an added element of excitement for the Canada West basketball playoffs this year. For the first time ever, a 17-team single knock-out tournament will decide who advances to the final four.

Men's and women's teams from across the west are set to meet at the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, and the University of Lethbridge in postseason action where every play and every shot counts.

The stage is set for dramatic comebacks, underdog victories, and emotional perseverance from Western Canada's top university athletes, who are also returning to postseason play for the first time since 2020, due to a year cancelled by COVID-19.

Women's games will go March 4-6 at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University.

The men's games are March 3-5 at the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge.

You can catch all the action in person or on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.

The Canada West Final Four championship is slated for March 18-19, 2022 and will be hosted by the highest seed remaining in the tournament.

Brian Swane, special to CW

Canada West’s men’s basketball teams didn’t miss a beat in returning to the hardwood this season following the cancellation of 2020-21. In fact, the calibre of play from B.C. to Manitoba has been so high that half of the latest U Sports Top 10 men’s basketball poll is comprised of Canada West teams.

CW Women's Basketball Playoffs set to roll, madness-style

Catch all the action on CWTV presented by Co-op

Brian Swane, special to CW

The 2022 Canada West women’s basketball playoffs get underway this week with 17 teams competing over three days that can best be described as madness – the kind found only in March.

First and second round action is set for Friday and Saturday, followed by Sunday’s quarterfinals which will see a quartet of teams punch their tickets to the Canada West Final Four, set for March 18-20.

So big is the bracket that two gyms are needed to host the action: Jack Simpson Gym at the University of Calgary and Kenyon Court at Mount Royal University. Seeds 10-17 begin play in the first round, seeds 4-9 get started in round two, and the top three seeds join in for the quarterfinals. There is no margin for error, with teams sent packing after one defeat.

The largest ever postseason field in Canada West includes four teams currently ranked in the U Sports Top 10: the Saskatchewan Huskies (No. 2), Winnipeg Wesmen (No. 5), Alberta Pandas (No. 7) and UFV Cascades (No. 8). Saskatchewan is the two-time defending conference champs and captured gold at the most recent U SPORTS Final 8 in 2020.
