University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Basketball head coach Tanya McKay has announced her second recruit for the upcoming season. Payton Gomes (Oak Park) has committed to joining the Wesmen Women’s Basketball program for the start of the 2014-2015 season.

Gomes a 5’11 forward averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Oak Park Raiders this past season. She finished the season shooting 58% from the field and connected on 75% from the foul line. Her solid play helped the Raiders reach the semifinals of the 2014 Manitoba High School Athletics Association AAAA Provincial Championships. Gomes was a member of the Oak Park team that captured the Provincial Basketball title back in 2013.

“We are very pleased Payton has selected the University of Winnipeg and our Wesmen Women’s Basketball team. She is athletic, strong and has a ton of potential. Payton will bring her drive to excel at the defensive end and control the boards. A great addition to our program”, said University of Winnipeg Women’s Basketball head coach Tanya McKay.

An accomplished student athlete, she currently is on the school’s Honour Roll. Gomes is a member of the Student Council and is the Conservation Co-Chairman (runs the recycling program at Oak Park).

Gomes will enter the University of Winnipeg this September to pursue a joint Engineering Program with the University of Minnesota.
