Basketball Manitoba today released the final schedule of events for the the second annual Women's Coach School.  The event will occur in conjunction with the 15U and 17U Female National Championships.  The first event occurred last summer in Toronto.  The School will run August 1-3 at the University of Manitoba and is targeted to coaches currently or aspiring to coach female athletes.  The Women's Coach School is a unique educational opportunity for motivated coaches that gives them direct access to the best coaches in the province.  Coaches who register will connect with top basketball coaches demonstrate key techniques and tactics required to become a leader in the coaching field.  Participant coaches will also have the opportunity watch National Championship games with their mentor coaches, who will help dissect the game happenings on the floor.  All participants will also receive a complimentary tournament pass to the championships ($30 value), a tournament t-shirt ($15 value) plus have access to the coaches room during the first 3 days of the championships.  A maximum of 20 coaches will be allowed to participate in the event and will be filled on a first come first served basis.  The School will be led by Coleen Dufresne and Pam Danis of the University of Manitoba, Don Thomson of Neelin High School in Brandon, Ken Olynyk formerly of the University of Toronto, Doug Patridge of Memorial University in Newfoundland, Dave Taylor of the University of Regina, Bev Greenlaw of Acadia University and Mike MacKay of Canada Basketball. 2011 Women's Coaches School Featuring:






Coleen <br />Dufresne



Coleen Dufresne is no stranger to basketball in Manitoba and the C.I.S. as she was the Head Coach of the University of Manitoba women's basketball team for 17 years from 1984-2001, a tenure that saw her win three National Championships (1987-88, 1994-95, 1995-96). Dufresne is a seven time Conference Coach of the Year and a three time C.I.S. Coach of the Year award winner, receiving the national honor twice as Head Coach of the Bisons (1987-88, 1997-98) and once as the Head Coach at the University of New Brunswick (1982-83).


 


She was a member of the Canadian National Team coaching staff in 1987 where the team won a bronze medal in the World Championships and in 1999 when Canada claimed the silver medal at the Pan American Games. In 1990 she coached the national B team which competed in the prestigious Jones Cup in Taiwan.


 


Dufresne was a CIAU All-Canadian at the University of Ottawa and is a former member of Canada's women's basketball team. She competed in the Pan American Games in Mexico City, the World Championships in Cali Columbia and the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.


 


She was a member of the 1986 Manitoba Senior women's team which won the Canadian National Championship, a first ever for any female team in Manitoba.


 


Dufresne is a two time inductee to the Basketball Manitoba Hall of Fame; one as a member of that 1986 senior women's team and the second as the Coach of the 1988 CIAU Champions, the U of Manitoba Bisons.


 


In 2005 she was the recipient of the YM/YWCA "Women of Distinction" award and currently is the Director of Athletics at the University of Manitoba.


 







Don Thomson


Don Thomson is a physical education teacher at Neelin High School in the Brandon School Division. He is currently the Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Neelin High School for the last 9 years.



His teams have been in the MHSAA Provincials Championship game for 7 straight years claiming the championships in 4 of those years. His teams have medalistsat the Provincials championships in 8 of the last 9 years.
 



Heis a former player of the Brandon University Men’s Basketball Program and former Brandon University Women’s Basketball Head Coach. During his tenure at BU, he led the Lady Cats to Play-off experiences 6 of 8 years.
 



Thomsonis a former Basketball Manitoba Provincial team head coach at the 15 U, Juvenile and Junior levels. He led the Manitoba men in the 2001 Canada Summer Games in London Ontario. Thomson is a fully certified NCCPLevel 3 coach and NCCP level 1 & 2 course conductor.




Donhas put on numerous clinics and camps across Western Canada at the Grass Roots, High School and Elite levels. He has worked with BasketballCanada on numerous basketball development opportunities. Currently he is the founder and Head Clinician in the annual 2K Basketball Camp run in July held in Brandon.



Donhas been a 4 time recipient of the MBCA “ Coach of the Year “ award andin 2002 was named the MHSAA Grey Cup Legacy Fund “ Coach of the Year “.




 



  


Pam Danis has been the head coach of the University of Manitoba Bisons women’s basketball team since 2001-02. Danis is no stranger to winning traditions, with her sterling playing background as the starting point guard for the University of Winnipeg from 1992-95. She was an instrumental player in the team’s three back-to-back-to-back national championships, and an astounding 88 game winning streak, which tied a North American record for the most consecutive wins.


More recently, Coach Danis is proud of a partnership with the Skownan First Nation known as “Running with the Bisons” which encourages friendship and understanding and the teachings of the bison.
Previous to the Bisons, she had coached with St. John’s Ravenscourt for six seasons. In addition, Danis coached the Manitoba Juvenile Provincial team for two seasons, and also spent one season as an assistant coach of the University of Manitoba Bisons.




 





 










Mike MacKay is responsible for the organization and implementation of the move to the new NCCP for basketball in Canada and the coordination and implementation of the Canada Basketball Long Term Athlete Development Model. He annually evaluates and mentors coaches at the U15 and U17 National Championships and regularly conducts coaching development clinics across the entire country. Mike also works closely with Canada’s National Team Coaches, National Elite Development Academy (NEDA) Coaches and Centres for Performance program to establish curriculum for player development and serves as the technical director at U17 and U15 national championships.


Mike has traveled to Australia, New Zealand, USA, Africa and Europe to attend international competitions and study the development systems of leading basketball nations including time time with British Basketball in training the coaches who will work in their new Elite Development Centres.


In his time as a coach, he has worked at the school level for 22 years winning seven provincial championships. At the CIS level, he has been the assistant coach at Lakehead & Acadia Universities and coached the Nova Scotia Women in three Canada Games and six National Championships.


Mike is the recipient of the Coaching Association of Canada 3M Coach of the Year in 2003, the Basketball Nova Scotia Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1993, the Truro Sport Heritage Coach of the Year 1989, 1993 and 1997 and the Olympic Flame Coach of the Year in 1989.
He also is a full time physical education teacher in Nova Scotia.
