The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association announced its Athletes
of the Year at a media conference on June 25, 2008.  These awards,
sponsored by Super 8 Hotels and Motels are known as the “Super 8 –
Super 8” and select a male and female from each of the four MHSAA
competition categories.  Each winner will receive a watch, courtesy of
Super 8 Motels and Hotels in Manitoba.   The Jostens Manitoba Male and Female High School Athlete of the Year will be selected from the “Super 8” recipients.

The 2007-2008 “Super 8 – Super 8” are as follows:





Robyn Small of Treherne Collegiate is the “A” Female Athlete of the Year.  She was captain of her Volleyball team, and was selected as a graduating All-Star in both Basketball and Volleyball.  She received the Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Basketball Scholarship, a Canada Basketball Scholarship, and a Credit Unions Scholar/Athlete Award.  Robyn also participates in Badminton, Fastpitch, Track & Field and Intramurals.  In Basketball, Robyn received Provincial All-Star recognition in her team’s Silver Medal Performance.  She is a lifeguard, Figure Skating Coach, Softball coach, Swim team coach and also referees Volleyball.



Kari Broadfoot of Warren Collegiate is the “AA” Female Athlete of the Year.  Kari was selected captain of the Wildcats Basketball and Volleyball Teams and participated in various intramural sports.  She received several tournament MVP and Player of the Game Awards in Volleyball.  Kari was Student Council President, Youth In Philanthropy co-founder and Student voice liason for Student Council.  She referees and coaches both volleyball and basketball, is involved with World Vision fundraiser.



Jessi Beth McCannell of Neelin High School in Brandon, is the “AAA” Female Athlete of the Year.  Jesse was a member of the Provincial High School “AAA” Volleyball and Basketball Gold Medal Winning teams, where she was selected as the MVP in both championships.  She was selected as a Graduating All-Star in both Volleyball and Basketball, is a Westman Basketball Coach, Clinician and Official as well as a Brandon School Division Official in Volleyball and Basketball.



Megan Cyr of Lord Selkirk Regional Secondary School is the “AAAA” Female Athlete of the Year.  Megan was Captain of the Royals Volleyball and Basketball Teams.  The Volleyball team was successful in capturing its fourth consecutive Provincial Championship and the Basketball Team advanced to the Final four.  She was the #9 ranked Basketball Player, and the #1 ranked  Volleyball player in the province.  Megan was selected to the Graduating All-Star for both volleyball and basketball.  She also participated in Track & Field (Long Jump, High Jump, 4 x 100m relay), and baseball.  She was selected as the “AAAA” Provincial Volleyball MVP, and Mike Burchuk Award for the Top Female Volleyball Player.  In the recent MILK Provincial Track & Field Championship, she participated in long jump and high jump.  




John Swanepoel  of Glenboro School is the “A” Male Athlete of the Year.  John was selected MVP at the Provincial “A” High School Volleyball Championships, where he was also recognized with the Players Choice Award.  He was also selected MVP at the “A” Basketball Provincial Championship.  John was selected to both volleyball and basketball Graduating All-Star Teams, and was Captain of both teams as well.  He was also Zone 6 Boys Singles Badminton Champion and participated in Track & Field.



Sterling Nostedt of Neelin High School in Brandon, is the “AAA” Male Athlete of the Year.  Sterling was captain of the Spartans Volleyball and Basketball, Provincial Championship winning teams.  He was also the Players’ Choice Award recipient in Basketball and the Provincial MVP for Basketball.  Sterling was selected to the Graduating All-Star team, and received the Garret Lee Sidor and Canada Basketball Scholarships.  He was a member of the Grad Committee, coaches Mini Spartans, officiates middle years Volleyball and Basketball and is a Brandon School division Track  Field Assistant.



Chris Voth  of St. Paul’s High School, is the “AAAA” Male Athlete of the Year.  Chris participates in Cross Country Running, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and Track.  He was the MVP of the “AAAA” High School Volleyball championship, which his Crusaders won and was the #1 ranked Player in the Coaches Poll.  Chris was selected to the Volleyball Graduating All-Star Team, All Manitoba Team and received the Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Volleyball Scholarship.   



The Jostens Male and Female High School Athletes of the Year are selected from the Super 8 – Super 8 winners.  Criteria for selection of the Athletes of the Year include participation in high school athletics as well as individual and team achievements.  



The 2008 Jostens Manitoba High School Athletes of the Year are...




Megan Cyr of Lord Selkirk Regional Secondary School and John Swanepoel of Glenboro School.  The Jostens Male and Female Athletes of the Year receive a ring and plaque courtesy of Jostens.  



Megan will be attending the University of Colorado in Boulder next year on a full Volleyball scholarship.  She will also be trying out for the Canadian Junior National Women’s Volleyball team this weekend in Winnipeg.



John will be attending the University of Winnipeg next year and playing for the Wesmen.  He is hoping to enter the Faculty of Medicine in the future.  John is also a member of the Provincial under 19 Volleyball team.



Last year’s winners were Kristi Hunter of Goose Lake High School in Roblin and Clancy Doiron of St. Paul’s High School.



The awards were presented at a reception held June 25th, 2008 by Bob Fitchner of Super 8, Rob Ferrand of Jostens, and MHSAA President, Don Hurton.
