Basketball Manitoba is pleased to announce that Steve Tackie and April McKnight have been chosen as head coaches for the Boys (17U) and Girls (15U) teams respectively.  Both bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the positions.

Stephen Tackie
takes the reigns of the Manitoba Juvenile Boys team (ages 16 & 17) and has been involved with the Manitoba Provincial Team program both as a head and an assistant coach at a variety of provincial developmental team levels since 1998.  In 2005, he began working as an assistant with Dave Crook and the Wesmen Men's basketball program and has been for the last 2 seasons.  Steve is very active in the summer basketball camp circuit with involvement with the Wesmen, Peace Gardens, Providence College, Athletes in Action, Brandon University, Rocky Mountain in Alberta and the Boston Celtics summer camp in Boston, Mass.


Currently, he is the head coach of the Junior Varsity Boys program (since 1996) at Silver Heights Collegiate, where he also has been a teacher since 2002. 


The Juvenile Boys team will be representing the province at a number of
lead-up tournaments and at the Canadian Nationals this August in
Sherbooke, Que in August.



"We have a lot of upcoming talent at this level who deserve the opportunity to showcase their skills and represent Manitoba!  Its an honor to be chosen as Manitoba's Juvenile Boys coach and to be part of the program to take these players to the next level.  This will be an exciting adventure!  The Manitoba juvenile teams have done well the last few years under the direction of Coaches Becker and Craddock.  I'm up to the challenge to maintain this standard!"

April McKnightApril McKnight comes to the Provincial Team Program with an extensive history in basketball at the school, club and provincial level.  An active basketball coach since 1997, April has worked at a variety of levels including junior high boys and girls at Selkirk and Acadia Junior Highs, Tec Voc High School and the Winnipeg Selects and Winnipeg Wild basketball clubs.  Currently, she is coaching the Acadia Senior Girls basketball team, where she also teaches and assists Bryan Kornberger and the Glenlawn Lions Varsity Girls team. 


April is also is also active with the TMO program at the University of Winnipeg, volunteered with the Western Canada Games in Selkirk in 2003 and has worked at a number of basketball camps around the province including the Peace Gardens and Brandon University.


Joining April as an assistant coach will be Sokrorn Chhoeun who is currently coaching the Varsity Girls Basketball Team at Miles Mac Collegiate and has been since 2004.


The 15U Girls team will be representing Manitoba at a number of
lead-up tournaments and at the Western Canada Games in Edmonton and at
the Canadian Nationals in British Columbia in August.

Steve and April join head coach Jaime Hickson and assistant Ang Wiebe (Willerton) (Juvenile Girls) and head coach Elliot Unger and assistant Emil Contreras (15U Boys) as Manitoba's 2007 Provincial Team coaching staff.
