The "Call a Foul on Cancer" is a newly developed campaign that will replace the long standing "Pink Whistle Campaign" with a new “LACE UP’ lavender shoe laces campaign. With each donation of $20 to the cause, a pair of lavender laces will be sent to the donor to wear the laces with pride in the month of February as a basketball official and others in the community.

Basketball Manitoba is reminding parents of children and you adults that the deadline to claim your Child Fitness Tax Credits is fast approaching with the upcoming tax deadline of April 30. The federal program began recognizing costs tied to sports programs for children under the age of 16 in 2007 and in 2011, the provincial government began recognizing the same program for people ages 16-24. If you have paid fees of up to $500 for basketball programming in the last tax year for people under the age of 24, you can claim credits back on your current tax return. Examples of eligible basketball programs include the Manitoba Provincial Team Program, Centre for Performance Program, Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association and Rising Stars League. The deadline to submit your tax return to the Canadian Revenue Agency is April 30. For all details on the two programs...
Manitoba’s Children’s Fitness Tax Credit will be extended to include claims for organized physical activities of young adults aged 16 to 24 starting in 2011, Premier Greg Selinger and Healthy Living, Youth and Seniors Minister Jim Rondeau announced April 15 at the grand opening of Sport Manitoba’s new Sport For Life Centre, where the premier also inducted world-record-holding 101-year-old swimmer Jaring Timmerman into the Order of the Buffalo Hunt. Basketball Manitoba is able to provide such a receipt upon request to fulfill the claim requirements the the upcoming tax year. The original Child Fitness Tax Credit is a federal tax credit that continues to apply to active children ages 15 and under.
The Government of Canada has ended the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit (CFTC) effective the 2017 tax year, however, people can still claim up to $500 in the Province of Manitoba tax credit for all people ages 24 and under in an 8+ week basketball program or league. The deadline to file your 2017 taxes with the Government this year is April 30. The basketball program (club, community club, etc) that you directly registered your child / young adult with will be able to issue to an official receipt. Due to their short timelines, basketball camps are not eligible for this type of tax credit.
The Conservative government is doubling the children's fitness tax credit in time for parents to file their taxes next spring, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday. The government will also make the credit refundable starting in 2015, which lets low-income families take advantage of the credit, too.
The maximum expense that can be claimed will go from $500 to $1,000. Parents can get back up to 15 per cent of their children's registration or membership fees come tax time. Accommodation, travel and food are not eligible for the credit.
The tax credit was introduced in 2006 to encourage physical fitness among children. The government says it applies to 850,000 families.
The tax credit applies to children under 16, or under 18 if they're eligible for the disability amount.
Eligible activities, according to the Canada Revenue Agency, "include strenuous games like hockey or soccer, activities such as golf lessons, horseback riding, sailing, and bowling, as well as others that require a similar level of physical activity."
That includes supervised children's activities that run for at least eight consecutive weeks or, in the case of children's camps, five consecutive days and that require significant physical activity.
Fees for school extracurricular programs are also eligible too, says the agency.

Children and young adults under the age of 25 in the respective tax year can have their fees claimed under the Manitoba Fitness Tax Credit. The Manitoba Fitness Tax Credit allows claims for fitness activities for children and young adults up to age 24. The cost of up to $500.00 in eligible fitness activities, as defined under the Province of Manitoba, may be claimed per child or young adult. For a child/young adult less than 18 years of age at the end of the year, the claim may be made by the child/young adult, or their parent. For a young adult 18 to 24 years of age at the end of the year, the claim may be made by the young adult, spouse or common-law partner.
This will provide an annual non-refundable benefit of up to $54 per youth. Children and young adults with a disability, on whose behalf at least $100 is spent for qualifying fitness activities, will be eligible for an additional $54 credit for a maximum credit of $108 – mirroring the federal treatment of children with a disability. The credits reduce Manitoba income tax otherwise payable in the tax year.

To help offset the provincial team fees, Basketball Canada offers the Adopt an Athlete Program which can generate an official tax receipt to those donating to the program in the name of an athlete in the program. This donation must come from a non-family member (friend or corporate donation) and be made payable to ‘Canada Basketball’ in order to be eligible. There must be no reference to the athlete or program name made on the cheque itself.
The Winnipeg Wesmen annual fundraising golf tournament sponsored by Qualico is entering Year 10 of helping our student-athletes achieve their goals in competition and in the classroom.

We are excited to be entering a new era in provincial sport with our Sport for Life Centre on Pacific Avenue in Winnipeg. With this centre, Sport Manitoba is dramatically increasing its reach and impact. Phase I is now open and Phase II, a training centre, is in the final stages of design. You may already be familiar with Phase 1 of the Sport for Life Centre. You may have been here to visit the Basketball Manitoba office, register for a program, attend a meeting, see a physical therapist or take a course. This facility has dramatically improved the services we can offer.
When both phases are open, it will be the first of its kind in Canada. It will combine sport expertise, training space, exercise and sport facilities, therapeutic space, research capabilities and the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in one central location. It will provide us with a seamless transition between training, coaching, testing and therapy, which is a first in Canada.
We are excited to announce we are now very close to the construction of the training centre!
The second phase of the Centre will be an important legacy for the 2017 Canada Summer Games and it will enhance our high-performance programs, enlarge the sport-medicine centre and allow us to accommodate more athletes, coaches and programs.
As you may know, Sport Manitoba recently started a community campaign with the goal of raising $8 million from the private sector. This will allow construction to begin in the fall so we can help train Manitoba's athletes for the Canada Games.
The good news is $6.8 million has already been raised and, between now and the end of May 2014, the Richardson Foundation is matching all donations and pledges to help build the centre dollar for dollar.
We need the support of those in our basketball community. Basketball Manitoba hopes to become an "anchor tenant" for Phase II, using it for Provincial Team and Centre for Performance training, youth and adult basketball games with the WMBA and other adult recreational leagues. Beyond basketball, the training centre will be open for you to use. It will also provide programming for local schools, inner-city kids, community groups, amateur sport teams and elite athletes.
We are requesting your commitment by the end of May 2014. You can make your payments over the next 3 years, monthly or annually. All contributions are tax deductible and your gift will be celebrated on our donor wall or can be anonymous. To have our home base right here, never mind to have three gymnasium spaces”, said Wedlake. “To also have the resources attached to it like athletic therapy and physical testing and training opportunities that are available as a support piece. It’s not just a gym. It’s all the pieces we need to bring our sport to the next level.”

Capital Campaign

Basketball Manitoba is reminding parents of children and you adults that the deadline to claim your Child Fitness Tax Credits is fast approaching with the upcoming tax deadline of April 30. The federal program began recognizing costs tied to sports programs for children under the age of 16 in 2007 and in 2011, the provincial government began recognizing the same program for people ages 16-24. If you have paid fees of up to $500 for basketball programming in the last tax year for people under the age of 24, you can claim credits back on your current tax return. Examples of eligible basketball programs include the Manitoba Provincial Team Program, Centre for Performance Program, Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association and Rising Stars League. Bison Sports is pleased to announce the Bison Athlete Walkway of Honour. This one of a kind new initiative in North America will be displayed outside of the Investors Group Athletic Centre (IGAC). Each former Manitoba Bisons student-athlete, who chooses to participate, will have a individual life-lasting plaque (approx. 5”x7”) with the name, sport number (where applicable), position and years played positioned on a display tower (approx. 7’ tall) on the Bison Walkway of Honour, to be set-up by the Fall of 2011.
