3x3 RULES

Please review the FIBA 3x3 Tournament Rules page and video.

Some points of emphasis and local modifications include…
  • The play remains ‘live’ after every score.  NO checking of the ball is performed after made baskets including FT.
  • Games are played to 21 points or 20 minutes running time, whichever occurs first.  The Canada Quest 3x3 Men’s and 18+ Women's division will use a 10 minute stopped time clock and a 12-second shot clock.
  • Possession of each game will be determined by a coin toss.  The winner of the coin toss will decide to begin the game with possession of the ball or in a potential overtime.
  • Shots made inside the arc are worth 1 point and shots made outside the arc are worth 2 points.  All made FT are 1 pt.
  • All violations, out of bounds and non-shooting fouls will result in the ball being ‘checked’ at to the top of the arc by the opposing team.
  • The ball needs to be ‘cleared’ past the 2 point arc on every change of possession, including made baskets.
  • A penalty of 2 free throws will be awarded at the 7, 8, 9 team foul and 2 free throws and possession of the ball will occur on the 10th and subsequent team foul per game.
  • A virtual 30-second shot clock will be managed by the referee in all divisions with a real 12-second shot clock used at the Canada Quest 3x3 Men’s Division and 18+ Women's division
  • If overtime is required after regulation time expires, the game will be won by the team who scores the first 2 points.  Overtime possession will be awarded to the team who did not begin the game in possession of the ball.
  • Defaulted games will be scored 21-0 in favour of the non-defaulting team.
