The Manitoba Bisons men’s basketball team will begin their 2010-11 season earlier than usual while hosting a new opponent. For the first time in over a quarter century, Manitoba will play a NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division 1 school at the University of Manitoba campus when the Bisons host the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits in exhibition play on Tuesday, August 24 and Friday, August 27 at 7:30 pm CT both nights at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (IGAC).

Tickets for the two exhibition games versus the Jackrabbits (10-8 in the Summit League conference play in 2009-10) will be available at the door and also during the Canadian National Men’s Basketball 15U and 17U tournament being held at the Investors Group Athletic Centre from August 2-7. Tickets to the only pre-season Bison men’s basketball home games this season will be priced per game at: Adults $10, Students and Seniors are $5 and Children Under 6 are free.

“This is the first time in many, many years that a NCAA Div. 1 opponent has come up to Winnipeg to play. It should be a good test for our guys and a great way to start off the Bisons training camp for the 2010-11 season,” stated Bison men’s basketball head coach Kirby Schepp. “Even though it is very early in the season for both teams, it will be great basketball for our local fans. We are very excited to be hosting the Jackrabbits of SDSU.”

Bison men’s basketball notes: Schepp is back in the office after returning from Hamburg, Germany where he was assistant coach of Canada’s Cadet Men’s National Team (CMNT) that captured a bronze medal at the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship on July 11/10. For Canadian basketball, there has been only one other time in the history of the World Championship that a Canadian men’s team has medaled. In 2005, the U21 Men’s team claimed bronze at the FIBA World Championship in Argentina.

The Junior Bison boys basketball program announced Will Gray and Tanner Draward as the recipients of the first annual Junior Bison Scholarship awards. Each received a scholarship award of $500 to Assist them in their studies at the University of Manitoba and Draward, who graduated from St. Paul’s HS, holds the distinction of being the first Junior Bison to be selected as part of the Bison men’s basketball university team.
