Overview & Notes     (top)

Welcome to the Basketball Manitoba High Performance Camps!  The Basketball Manitoba High Performance Camps are for experienced players from ages 11 to 17 years old. The camp has an emphasis on improving the athlete’s fundamental skills and understanding of the game. The camp provides a 6 to 1 player to coach ratio and is taught by some of the most successful coaches and players in Manitoba! 

  • Sessions are limited to 24 participants so register now!
  • Players are to attend ALL days of the camp (15 hours of court time in all)
  • Players are asked to show up 20 minutes prior to the first session to register.
  • Players are asked to come dressed ready to participate including non-marking runners, shorts (no pockets) and a t-shirt. It is also suggested players bring a water bottle and a towel.
  • Parking at Balmoral Hall is located at the main entrance on the North side of the school and on surrounding streets. Access to the gym is gained via the school's main entrance on the North side of the campus.
  • Every camp participant will receive a T-shirt and basketball.
  • All registered participants are covered under Basketball Manitoba’s Insurance Program.

Dan Becker     (top)

Dan BeckerDan has been an active player and coach for over 25 years at all levels of the game. His playing history began as a standout player at Fort Richmond Collegiate which took him on to play NCAA Division 1 basketball at the University of Colorado.

 

His 12 year professional career took him all over the world playing in Portugal, Germany, Luxembourg, Israel, Spain, Finland, Mexico and Australia. Dan also suited up for North American leagues with the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) in Omaha, the Global Basketball Association (GBA) in Greensborough, N.C., the USBL (Long Island), played in the L.A. Summer Pro League and attended Training Camp with the Indiana Pacers of the NBA.

 

Dan's playing career also saw him represent Team Canada in the 1989 World Student Games, two Jones Cups (’84 and ’94), and various national training teams.

   

After his playing career Dan served as an assistant at the C.I.S. men's level from 2000 to 2004 and took the interim head coaching duties in 2004-05 with the University of Manitoba Men's Program.

 

Dan coached a number of Basketball Manitoba's Provincial Teams at the Midget (15U) and Juvenile (17U) levels. In 2004 Dan led the Men’s Juvenile team to a bronze medal finish at the National Championships.

   

In 2005 Dan joined Randy Kusano and the Oak Park Raiders Varsity Boy's Program, coaching in 5 consecutive Final Fours and winning 2 Provincial Championships. Dan completed his NCCP Level 4 education at the National Coaching Institute in Winnipeg and is currently the High Performance Coach for Basketball Manitoba.

Pam Danis     (top)

Pam DanisPam Danis has been the head coach of the University of Manitoba Bisons women¹s basketball team since 2001-02 season.

Danis is no stranger to winning traditions, with her sterling playing

background as the starting point guard for the University of Winnipeg from 1992-95. She was an instrumental player in the team¹s three back-to-back-to back CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) National Championships, and an astounding 88 game winning streak, which tied a North American record for the most consecutive wins.

Over her nine year CIS coaching career at Manitoba, she has guided the program to seven consecutive post-season visits from 2002-09. Plus, Danis led the team to their highest win total with 14 regular season conference victories in 2006-07 season, since the start of the decade (2000-01). In her tenure, there have been two major CIS national award winners from the program (Rachel Hart ¬ 2006-07 CIS Defensive Player of the Year and Michele
Hynes ¬ 2009-10 CIS Hynes Sylvia Sweeney Award). Danis is proud of a ongoing and rewarding partnership with the Skownan First Nation known as Running with the Bisons which encourages friendship and understanding and the teachings of the bison.

 

Previous to the Bisons, she had coached with St. John¹s Ravenscourt for six seasons. In addition, Danis coached the Manitoba Juvenile Provincial team for two seasons, and also spent one season as an assistant coach of the University of Manitoba Bisons.

 

Chris Dyck     (top)

Chris Dyck

Chris played high school basketball at River East Collegiate where he led his team to a 35-0 record and a provincial championship in his grade 10 season. In grade 12 he captured the yet another provincial championship and was named MVP. He was also invited to the All-Canada Nike Camp.

 

Chris played his first two years of C.I.S. action at the University of Manitoba where he was the team’s leading scorer. After transferring to the University of British Columbia, he had three outstanding seasons being part of a 2 time Canada West Champion Thunderbird squad and being named a 3 time Canada West All-Star. In Chris’s final season, he made it all the way to the National Championship game and was named a C.I.S. National Championship All-Star. In only three seasons at UBC he was 7th in all time scoring and finished his career in the top 20 Canada West scorers of all time and top 10 in three pointers made.

 

Chris was selected to play for Canadian National Team at the 2009 World University games in Belgrade, Serbia where he was named a team captain and scored a game high 23 points against Team USA.

Coleen Dufresne     (top)

Coleen Dufresne is no stranger to basketball in Manitoba and the C.I.S. as she was the Head Coach of the University of Manitoba women's basketball team for 17 years from 1984-2001, a tenure that saw her win three National Championships (1987-88, 1994-95, 1995-96). Dufresne is a seven time Conference Coach of the Year and a three time C.I.S. Coach of the Year award winner, receiving the national honor twice as Head Coach of the Bisons (1987-88, 1997-98) and once as the Head Coach at the University of New Brunswick (1982-83).

 

She was a member of the Canadian National Team coaching staff in 1987 where the team won a bronze medal in the World Championships and in 1999 when Canada claimed the silver medal at the Pan American Games. In 1990 she coached the national B team which competed in the prestigious Jones Cup in Taiwan.

 

Dufresne was a CIAU All-Canadian at the University of Ottawa and is a former member of Canada's women's basketball team. She competed in the Pan American Games in Mexico City, the World Championships in Cali Columbia and the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.

 

She was a member of the 1986 Manitoba Senior women's team which won the Canadian National Championship, a first ever for any female team in Manitoba.

 

Dufresne is a two time inductee to the Basketball Manitoba Hall of Fame; one as a member of that 1986 senior women's team and the second as the Coach of the 1988 CIAU Champions, the U of Manitoba Bisons.

 

In 2005 she was the recipient of the YM/YWCA "Women of Distinction" award and currently is the Director of Athletics at the University of Manitoba.

Jerry Hemmings     (top)

Jerry Hemmings

You can start and stop the discussion about Jerry Hemmings with one three-digit number: 734. That is 734 career wins as coach of the Brandon University Bobcats men’s basketball team, making him the winningest coach in Canadian university basketball history.

 

Born in Mount Airy, N.C., Hemmings won a state high school title, played pro ball in Europe for a couple of years and then came to Canada to play for three seasons – two with Lakehead University and one with Brandon University Bobcats, where he was named a first-team GPAC all-star.

 

But it was when he turned to coaching at BU in 1974 that Hemmings really made a name for himself. Besides his 734 career wins, he guided the Bobcats to 21 national tournament appearances and four Canadian championships (1987-89 and 1996).

 

He took a one-year sabbatical to coach at Tulane University in 1983-84, took another one-year leave in 1989-90, and spent the 1993-94 season as assistant coach of the Canadian National team that played in the World Championships in Toronto. There he had two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash on the roster. He returned to coach the Bobcats from 1994-03, taking his final sabbatical in 2003.

 

 

Michele Hynes     (top)

Michele was a member of the Manitoba Bisons women's program from 2005-2010, where she was awarded the Bison Team MVP in 2009. In 2010, she was named the CIS' Sylvia Sweeney Award Winner which recognizes a Canadian women's university basketball player who best exemplifies the values of athletics, academics and community involvement. An Academic All-Canadian in her 5 years with the Bisons, Michele was a member of the National Champion Team Ontario in 2004 and was a 3 time AAAA High School Ontario Provincial Medalist and a 4 time Provincial Club Champion (Hamilton Transway) in 2001-2005.

 

As a coach, she has is the Rural Team Coordinator and Coach with the JRB Basketball program (2009-Present) and was the 2009 MBCA Jim Bulloch Coaching Award Winner. Since 2005, she has been an active coach with the Junior Bison / JRB programs and active camp instructor.

 

Randy Kusano     (top)

Randy Kusano

Randy Kusano has been involved in basketball as a player and coach for over forty years. He developed his love for basketball at Norberry junior High in St. Vital playing for Hall of Famer, Dennis Alvestad. He moved on to Glenlawn Collegiate and finally to the University of Manitoba.

 

Randy was a member of three consecutive Canadian Junior Men’s championship teams from 1971-1973. In 1976 he was a member of the first Manitoba team to win a National University championship in basketball, the University of Manitoba Bisons.

 

After his university years were done he continued playing with the Nicolett Inn Senior men’s team that captured their first National Senior Men’s Championship in 1979. The University of Manitoba Junior Men and Nicolett Inn Senior men’s teams were later inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame.

 

Randy’s coaching career began with the University of Manitoba Junior Bisons in 1974 and continued there until 1976. He has coached high school basketball for the past thirty-four years, thirty two as head coach of the Varsity Boys program at Oak Park High School.

 

Over his 34 years at Oak Park, Randy developed the dominate high school program of it’s era, going to 15 Final Fours and winning 3 AAAA Provincial Championships. During this time he has helped to develop more than twenty five players who have gone on to play at the Canadian College or CIS level. Randy has also served as an assistant coach at the University of Manitoba for fifteen years.

 

Randy has also coached numerous Manitoba Provincial teams as head coach and as an assistant coach at the Canada Games, Western Canada Games, and National Championships. He is a current member of the Executive on the Board of Basketball Manitoba. Randy is a fully certified NCCP Level 3 coach.

Tanya MacKay     (top)

Tanya MacKayTanya, a native of Sackville, Nova Scotia, played 5 years for the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Basketball program and was recognized 3 times as an All-Canadian.

 

Tanya started coaching in 1991 at Silver Heights Collegiate and spent five years there leading her team in the final year to the AAAA Provincial Championships Final Four.

 

Tanya is a fully certified NCCP Level IV and has been the Head Coach of the Wesmen Women’s Basketball Team since 1996. With four National Championship appearances between 2000–2004, the Wesmen earned 2 Silver Medals and 2 bronze medals in their efforts during that time.

 

In 1992 Tanya was an Assistant Coach with the Junior Women’s Provincial Team and in 1995 the Head Coach of the Juvenile Provincial Team that won a Silver Medal at the Western Canada Summer Games. In the summer of 2000, she was the Head Coach of the Junior Women’s Provincial Team that earned Manitoba a Silver Medal at the Junior National Championships. In 2001, Tanya lead Team Toba as the Head Coach of the Junior Women’s provincial team that competed at the 2001 Canada Summer Games. The following two summers in 2002 and 2003, she served as an Assistant Coach of the Juvenile Provincial Team plus in the summer of 2003, the Head Coach of the Midget Provincial Team, earning a 4th place finish at the National Championships and Bronze Medal Winners at the 2003 Western Canada Summer Games.

  

Tanya’s International Coaching resume includes working with the National Student Team in 1999 as an Assistant Coach at the World University Games. As well, in 2001, Assistant Coach with Canada’s Junior National team that participated in the 2001 Francophone Games hosted by Canada in Ottawa.


Amy Ogidan     (top)

Amy Ogidan

Amy Ogidan attended Oak Park High school from 2004-2007 earning back to back All-Manitoba team honors in 2006 and 2007. At 5’11”, Amy is a gifted athlete and versatile and talented player.

Amy played 4 years for the Manitoba Provincial Team, including the Canada Games in 2005. She was selected in 2004 at the age of 14 to the invite only Nike Camp which hosted 50 of the top female basketball players from across Canada. She was one of the youngest players ever to be invited. In 2007 Amy started CIS play with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen. In her rookie year she was selected to the CIS Rookie-All-Canadian Team. In her young career thus far she has been recognized as an Academic All-Canadian and player of the month and week several times.


Ogidan also participated at the National team level in 2008. As a member of the student national team, she traveled to Beijing prior to the 2008 Olympics to play a series of exhibition games against the Chinese National Team.


Aside from basketball Ogidan has displayed heavy coaching involvement in summer camps, boys and girls club teams, WMBA, club teams, skill development programs and support for provincial teams.

 

Tami Pennell     (top)

Tami PennellTami Pennell is a native of Newfoundland and Labrador where she competed for five years at the CIS level for Memorial University of Newfoundland. Tami graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education and a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology.

 

A fully certified Level IV coach, she started coaching while attending university and spent ten years coaching at the provincial level where her teams captured a Gold Medal at the U-17 Eastern Canadian, a bronze medal at the U-17 National Championships and finished 4th at the 2001 Canada Games in London Ontario.

 

Tami made the move to Manitoba to become head coach at the CIS level at Brandon University after being an assistant coach at Memorial University for 7 years. While coaching at BU Tami worked at completing her National Coaching Institute diploma through Sport Manitoba and spent two years coaching at the provincial level for Manitoba. In 2003, she was the Assistant Coach for the Midget Provincial Team finishing 4th at the National Championships and Bronze Medal Winners at the 2003 Western Canada Summer Games.

For the past 6 years, Tami has been an assistant at The University of Winnipeg where their teams have made play-offs all 6 years and was highlighted with a silver medal in 2005.


Martin Riley     (top)

Martin Riley was born in Winnipeg and made his first impact in basketball as a student at Sisler High School. In 1973, Riley was the captain of a Spartans squad that finished with a record of 38 wins, 0 losses en route to the provincial championship - the only varsity boys team in Manitoba that had accomplished such a feat to this date.

Riley also won the coveted Carl Ridd Award for excellence in academics and on the basketball court. Riley was the first player to gain a spot on the Canadian National Team right out of high school and he played a major role in the revival of the national basketball program. In 1973, the federal government seriously contemplated termination of the program, but Riley’s contribution led to an impressive showing for the Canadian team at the Montreal Olympiad of 1976. Although the team was defeated in the bronze medal match, Canada finished among the top five basketball nations in the world.


In 1976, Riley led the University of Manitoba Bisons to the national championship and was awarded the Mike Moser Trophy as the country’s top player. He was selected as Manitoba’s Athlete of the Year in 1976 and was named to the All-Canadian team in 1976, 1977 and 1978.

Riley guided the Nicolett Inn basketball team to consecutive Senior Men’s national titles in 1979 and 1980 and was named captain of the Canadian team that did not participate due to the boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics.


In the early 1980’s, Riley played professionally in Argentina for two seasons and ended his playing career with the national program.


Riley went on to coach the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s program from 1981 to 1984, after which he started coaching the basketball program at Miles Mac Collegiate in Winnipeg. Riley led Miles Mac to two provincial AAAA championships during his seven-year stint as head coach.

 
Martin has also been inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame, the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, and the Canada Basketball Hall of Fame.

Don Thomson     (top)

Don Thomson

Don Thomson is a physical education teacher at Neelin High School in the Brandon School Division. He is currently the Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Neelin High School for the last 9 years.

His teams have been in the MHSAA Provincials Championship game for 7 straight years claiming the championships in 4 of those years. His teams have medalists at the Provincials championships in 8 of the last 9 years.


He is a former player of the Brandon University Men’s Basketball Program and former Brandon University Women’s Basketball Head Coach. During his tenure at BU, he led the Lady Cats to Play-off experiences 6 of 8 years.


Thomson is a former Basketball Manitoba Provincial team head coach at the Midget, Juvenile and Junior levels. He led the Manitoba men in the 2001 Canada Summer Games in London Ontario. Thomson is a fully certified NCCP Level 3 coach and NCCP level 1 & 2 course conductor.


Don has put on numerous clinics and camps across Western Canada at the Grass Roots, High School and Elite levels. He has worked with Basketball Canada on numerous basketball development opportunities. Currently he is the founder and Head Clinician in the annual 2K Basketball Camp run in July held in Brandon.


Don has been a 4 time recipient of the MBCA “ Coach of the Year “ award and in 2002 was named the MHSAA Grey Cup Legacy Fund “ Coach of the Year “.

 

 

 

Sherwin Vasallo      (top)

 

Sherwin VasalloSherwin is the owner/operator of Acceleration Performance in Winnipeg. He is a basketball strength and speed professional who specializes in working directly with athletes to reach their maximum potential. To give the best results for the company’s clients, Sherwin has earned a degree in Kinesiology, the distinction of Certified Athletic Therapist, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Certified Russian Kettlebell instructor and is a Level 1 Weightlifting Coach. Sherwin’s training of elite level athletes has been a passion and philosophy for several years. His continual research and unique training methods has helped countless athletes achieve their goals and dreams.

 

Joey Vickery     (top)

Joey Vickery

A 1985 graduate of Westwood Collegiate, Joey won a AAAA High School Championship and was nominated to the All-Manitoban Team twice.

After high school Joey was a member of the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in 1986 and 1987 and earned Rookie of the Year honors in 1986 and All-Canadian status in 1987.


Joey played for the Brandon University Bobcats in 1989, 1990, and 1991. As a member of the Brandon Bobcats team that became National University Champions in 1989, Joey was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was a first-team All-Canadian in 1987, 1990 and 1991. At the 1990 Canadian Inter-University Athletic Union championship, he was a tournament All-Star. Joey was also Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) All-Star in 1987, 1989, 1990, and 1991.


Joey went on to be a member of the Canadian national teams that represented Canada at the World Championships in Toronto in 1994 and in Athens, Greece in 1998, and at the World University Games in; Sheffield, England in 1991 earning a Silver medal, and a fourth place finish in Duisburg, Germany in 1989.


Joey moved his basketball talent to Europe and had a successful 15 year career as a professional in Spain, France, Lithuania, Sweden, and Austria. Joey was the MVP of the Lithuanian League, play-off MVP of the LEB2 league in Spain, a two time All-Star in France’s Pro B league, an All-Star selection in Sweden, and an MVP and a two-time All-Star in Austria.
