Getting to the next level….here are a few things to consider if you are an athlete wanting to continue playing ball at the next level.

In my last few weeks as High Performance Coach I’ve figured out how I could give some last words of advice to the young basketball players in this province. I know how amazing the different experiences I’ve had as a high school and university athlete, as well as being a university assistant coach and a college and provincial team head coach have been, and that’s something that I hope every athlete can have an opportunity to experience

Canada Games come and gone…. PDF Print E-mail

So with the end of the provincial team season, it’s now our opportunity to sit back and reflect on the journey of the past year. It’s amazing the improvement in our team’s ability to compete at the national level. Yes, we moved up 1 spot to 8th place but let me put it in perspective…the 9th place team, Saskatchewan (who we beat for the first time in many years by the way), only lost to the gold medallist team Alberta by 5 points. The 7th place team, Nova Scotia, beat Quebec (who finished 4th) by 17 points in round robin play; Quebec beat Ontario by 7 and we lost to Nova Scotia by 7. So can you see how finishing eighth and playing well against several of these teams is nothing to be ashamed of?

From Zebras to Caribou PDF Print E-mail

From zebras to caribou, who would have thought that basketball would take me to such amazing places? When somebody asks me what kind of benefits that basketball can offer I don’t even know where to begin. Of course we have the basics: it keeps you in shape, forces you to learn to work under pressure, teamwork, coordination, flexibility and all those good things. But it’s the intrinsic benefits of the sport that I’d like to focus on this time – the things that leave me speechless... well, almost speechless!

Hello from Rwanda PDF Print E-mail
Written by Cheryl Jean-Paul

By Cheryl Jean-Paul.  I am now two thirds done my Africa trip with Athletes in Action and really enjoying the time in Rwanda. It's been emotional yet rewarding at the same time seeing how the people of Rwanda are trying to rebuild their nation. In some ways, they are so much farther ahead than us Canadians.  They've banned plastic bags, nobody smokes here except foreigners, they don't litter, the streets are immaculately clean, they have police all over the place and have very little crime.  They are really trying to show the world that they are one united nation. For those of you who don't know about Rwanda, there was a terrible genocide here in 1994 which pitted one tribe against another with neighbors and family friends killing each other because of mindless reasons. We took a tour of the Genocide Museum and were appalled at the videos and pictures of the destruction and death.

Do More With Less PDF Print E-mail

I am going to propose something that I hope will cause some discussion and maybe even have some people re-think their high school basketball program. Here goes… we should reduce the number of games that teams are allowed to play. This may not apply to all levels of high school basketball, but likely to most of 4A, a good chunk of 3A and few other programs at other levels. The reason I suggest doing something this drastic can be revealed by analyzing the current season.  Here's how...

Evolve or Get Left Behind PDF Print E-mail

Valuing. Interacting. Leading. Problem-solving. Critical Thinking.  These are the 5 National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) core competencies that coaches are now being trained in and evaluated on to receive their certification. Are you feeling warm and tingly inside too?!Gone are the days when winning championship banners and developing university athletes justified your coaching style. We can all name someone who epitomized the “win at all costs” coaching philosophy. Chairs been kicked, clipboards being smashed, athletes living and playing in fear, running until you puke because you’re not quite sure why, coaches controlling everything….those are the good ole days?

High school seasons are starting in a few weeks and just as the competition levels rise from junior high to junior varsity to varsity, so do the expectations of parents, coaches and athletes. Picture the last basketball conversation you had with your child as you drove home from their game. What was the first question you asked? Did you get more than a 1 word answer? (Fine, whatever, sure, dunno, yeah…) If your answer was one of the following…this blog’s for you!

What does a healthy basketball community look like? PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday September 09, 2008
So here’s my first blog – my first opportunity to really have some people shake their heads….what do I say? As the newly appointed female high performance basketball coach (having just completed the first summer gearing towards Canada Games with the juvenile girl’s provincial team) I have really had a great experience working with the athletes that were selected to represent our province. It was an honor to work with such character people. But every weekend in preparation for the National Championships, something happened where I just shook my head and wondered (along with my assistant coaches), why does this kid not know how to do a left-handed lay-up? Why do they seem so lost when we talk about basketball concepts rather than set plays? Does anyone talk about Defense anymore? Why are our kids so far behind in basic skills when 90% of them are playing basketball 10-11.5 months of the year in school and in club programs?
