49th Annual Wesmen Classic

Oak Park 75 Vincent Massey 64 [Quarter-Final]

The defending Wesmen Classic and Provincial champions, the Oak Park Raiders advanced to the semi final round of the Metro News High School Boy's Classic with a 75-64 quarter-final round victory over the Vincent Massey Trojans.  Jerome Wuider led the Raiders with 22 points and was named the Player of the Game for his performance. Julian Burtniak was the top scorer for the Trojans with 22  points.  The Raiders led at the halftime break by a 49-31 margin.  Oak Park will face the winner of the Grant Park- John Taylor match-up in one semi final scheduled for Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.


John Taylor 113  Grant Park 45 [Quarter-Final]

The John Taylor Pipers defeated the Grant Park Pirates 113-45 in quarter-final action at the Metro News High School Boy's Classic Sunday afternoon.  The Pipers will face the Oak Park Raiders in one semi final match-up on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.  Grade 11 guard Riki Zimbakov led the Pipers with a game high 23 points. James Wagner was next with 20. Zimbakov was named Player of the Game. Dez Tade and Tyler Hodgson each scored 13 points for the Pirates.


Garden City 69 Fort Richmond 56 [Quarter-Final]

Grade 12 guard Christian De Leon scored a game high 22 points to lead the Garden City Fighting Gophers to a 69-56 quarter-fianl win over the Fort Richmond Centurions.  De Leon scored 14 points in the opening half and was named Player of the Game for his efforts.  Trezon Morcilla added 15 points for the Fighting Gophers. Rodney Mutaasa was the top scorer for Fort Richmond with 15 points.  Garden City jumped out to an 8-0 lead early on but the Centurions regrouped scoring 15 unanswered points to jump ahead 15-8 in the opening quarter. Garden City regrouped and went into the halftime break with a 35-28 lead.  The Fighting Gophers will face the winner of the Kildonan East-St. Ignatius quarter final in one semi-final Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.


Kildonan East 73 St. Ignatius 46 [Quarter-Final]

The Kildonan East Reivers defeated the St. Ignatius Falcons 73-46 in quarter-final action at the Metro News High School Boy's Classic.  Matthew Peters and David Mugugu each scored 16 points to lead the Reivers. Eddie Omari and Thomas Walser each netted 10 points for the Falcons.  Peters was named the Player of the Game. Kildonan East had control of the game early on, leading 34-19 at the halftime break.  The Reivers will face Garden City in semi final action on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

Junior Varsity Boy's Game Results


49th Annual Wesmen Classic

Sisler 67 Garden City 64 [Championship Final]

The Sisler Spartans erased an 11 point halftime deficit to defeat the Garden City Fighting Gophers 67-64 in a thrilling championship final of the Adidas Junior Varsity Wesmen Classic Sunday evening at the Duckworth Centre.  Sisler went into the halftime break trailing 38-27 but came out firing in then second half, outscoring the Fighting Gophers by a 40-26 margin.  Tournament MVP Shawn Maranan led the Spartans with 26 points. Tournament All-Star Eli McKay added 15 points.  Garden City was led by Tournament All-Star Kyle Lai's 29 points, including eight-three pointers. Fellow All-Star Justin Omaga scored 10 points.  Sisler made their move with over five minutes to play in the fourth quarter, pulling even at 50-50. The teams exchanged deep three-pointers to once again tie the score at 53-53. After Sisler pulled ahead, Garden City continued to keep the pressure on the Spartans until the final 25 seconds when the Spartans closed out the contest with successful free throws to close out the victory.  The victory by the Spartans is their third Wesmen Classic JV Championship and first since 2004.  Shawn Maranan (Sisler) was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player.  Theo Simmons (John Taylor), Aliou Sesay (Dakota), Eli McKay (Sisler), Justin Omaga (Garden City) and Kyle Lai (Garsden City) were named to the Tournament All-Star team.
