Wesmen Kleysen and Noonan Honoured as Canada West All-Stars

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen along with the Canada West Universities Athletics Association announced today that fifth year guard and team captain Stephanie Kleysen (pictured left) has been named the Canada West Women’s Basketball Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a Second Team All-Star. It was also announced that third year guard Megan Noonan (pictured right) was selected as a Third Team All-Star.

Kleysen finished among the league leaders in both offensive and defensive categories during the 2014-2015 Canada West regular season.  Her relentless play at both ends of the court played a huge role in helping the Wesmen finish with a 14-6 regular season record and a fourth place finish in the Pioneer Division. She averaged 2.8 steals per game (third in the conference), while anchoring the suffocating Wesmen defence that forced 23 turnovers per game, second-best in the league. Kleysen was also a force on offense, placing eighth in Canada West scoring averaging 16.3 ppg, second in three-point field goal percentage (45.3) in addition to grabbing 6.7 rebounds per game and dishing out 3.2 assists.

“We are very proud of Stephanie for her contributions and accomplishments this season. Being acknowledged as both Canada West Defensive Player of the Year and an All-Star caps a great university basketball career. She was a big part of our team’s success”, said Wesmen Women’s Basketball head coach Tanya McKay.

Kleysen moves forward as the Canada West nominee for the CIS Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Noonan finished in the top five in several Canada West Women’s Basketball statistical categories including, fifth in scoring averaging 17.2 points per game, second in three pointers made (55), second in free throw percentage (83.9%) and third in steals (53). She also led the Canada West Conference in minutes played averaging 33.9 minutes per game during the regular season. A starter in all 20 regular season games, Noonan scored a season high 28 points against Regina (February 13, 2015) and recorded 20 plus points on six occasions during regular season play.

“Megan is very deserving for being recognized as a Canada West All-Star. Her hard work showed in her consistent performance all season”, added McKay.
