The MBCI Hawks opened up the 47th Annual Wesmen Classic with a hard fought 80-73 victory over the John Taylor Pipers. Guard Derek McKnight led the Hawks with 24 points. Grade 11 guard Torrez McKoy also scored 24 points, with 20 coming in the final 20 minutes. Marcus Morgan led the Pipers with a game high 27 points. The Hawks went into the halftime break with a slim 34-33 lead. MBCI will face the winner of the Oak Park/UW Collegiate matchup in one semi finalSaturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

The Oak Park Raiders advanced to the semi-final round of the High School draw with a 104-46 victory over the UW Collegiate Wesmen. The Raiders had control of the contest early on leading 54-26 at the halftime break. Breandan Alexander led the Raiders with 17 points. William Sesay finished with a double-double 15 points and 16 rebounds. Chace Moroz led the Wesmen with a game high 25 points, including five-three pointers. Oak Park will face MBCI in one semi-final Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Wesmen will face John Taylor in the consolation semi final Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m.

  • Roan Van Eerd (Sturgeon Heights) 13 points
A strong second half lifted the Kelvin Clippers to a 70-46 victory over the Sturgeon Heights Huskies in the quarter final’s of the High School section at the 47th Annual Wesmen Classic. The Clippers outscored the Huskies 40-22 in the second half to propel toem to the victory. Kelvin only led by six at the halftime break by a 30-24 margin. Ivan Paskvalin led the Clippers with a game high 28 points, including three-three pointers. Roan Van Eerd led the Huskies with 13 points. Kelvin will move on to Sunday’s semi final round against the winner of the Garden City/Maples matchup. The semi final takes place at 4:00 p.m.Sturgeon Heights will play in the consolation semi-final Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m.

The defending Wesmen Classic and Provincial Champions, Garden City Fighting Gophers advanced to the High School semi-finals with a convincing 84-43 victory over the Maples Marauders Friday evening. The Fighting Gophers were led by the trio of Byron Oduca (21 points), Jowel Shuffler (20 points) and Arbee Pablo (19 points). Matt Dunning was the top scorere for Maples finishing with 11 points. Garden City went into the halftime break with a 39-21 lead and were never threatened in the second half. Garden City will face Kelvin in one semi final Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Maples will face Sturgeon Heights in the consolation semi final Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m.

Garden City 70 Maples 68 [Championship Final]


Trezon Morcilla (Garden City) 20 points

The Garden City Fighting Gophers captured their second adidas Junior Varsity Championship in the past three years with a last second 70-68 victory over the Maples Marauders Friday evening at the 47th Annual Wesmen Classic. The Fighting Gophers won the Championship in 2011. Garden City guard Marcel Arruda-Welch scored the winning basket with seven seconds left on the clock breaking a 68-68 tie. Maples went into the halftime break leading 60-53. Tournament MVP Trezon Morcilla led Garden City with 20 points. Arruda-Welch who was named a tournament All-Star added 18 points. Maples was led by Eric Braganza’s game high 22 points. Braganza was named to the Tournament All-Star Team.
