Manitoba Provincial Team Program Tryouts Set for May 23-25, 2014; New 16U Program Added

Basketball Manitoba today announced the new tryout dates timelines and location for the 2014 Manitoba Provincial Team Program.  The tryouts will occur at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre with the open Phase 1 on May 23-25, 2014 and tryouts completing with Phase 2 on May 30-June 1.  The change will include a new age division for 2014 at the 16U level (born in 1998) to join the traditional 15U and 17U programs.  All ages will see their tryouts run in conjunction with each other.  The change to the traditional timelines of the tryouts comes after a number of consultations with different programs and associations on when is the best time of year to host the start of the Provincial Team program.

Traditionally, the tryouts had been held in early April with the Provincial Teams then continuing with training through April and May, but at times faced a number of challenges over this time with other basketball options.  The new timeline to start after the May Long Weekend will see a majority of the spring club basketball tournament commitments start to quiet down opening the door to the Provincial Team to continue through to the National Championships in late July with no interruption.

The coaching staff of the Manitoba Provincial Team program will be evaluating and identifying potential athletes to the program at different school and club basketball tournaments from February through May including the Basketball Manitoba Junior High Invitational Tournament (March 24-27, 2014) and Club Basketball Provincial Championships (May 1-4, 2014) among others.

Basketball Manitoba will be expecting all players selected to the Provincial Teams to make a full commitment to training with the program right through late May, June and July.  Specific details on the times of the trouts will be announced in the New Year.

All 15U, 16U and 17U teams will attend their respective National Championship in Edmonton, AB in late July as part of last week's announcement.  The 16U event will be a provincial team based national invitational tournament.  All will be an NCAA sanctioned and viewable event.

The Manitoba Provincial Team program is coming off its most successful summer in 2013 with 3 of the 4 teams bringing home a national medal including 2 at the Canada Games!  Our strength as as province to consistently represent with our our best players and coaches was the motivation behind our new slogan...
