Toronto, Ont. – The 2014 15U and 17U National Championships will take place in Edmonton, Alberta at the Saville Community Sports Centre from July 24th – 31st.

It is an unprecedented event as it is the first time that the tournaments for both age categories, men and women, are hosted during the same week in the same location. The Saville Community Sports Centre, with its 12 courts under a single roof provides the ideal location to accommodate all players for a unique event that will bring in teams representing provinces and territories across the country to compete for a national title.

The dates of the 2014 tournament fall within an NCAA viewing window which will allow NCAA coaches to join CIS and CCAA coaches in attending this event. An application for full event sanctioning by the NCAA of this tournament is currently being undertaken.

Michele O’Keefe, executive director of Canada Basketball, sees the national championships as an important event for both players and coaches across the country. “The young players who represent the provinces and territories have been selected through hard work and commitment to their teams. The coaches leading these teams have also shown their commitment to basketball development in Canada. National championships are an event where the provincial and territorial teams take pride in competing for the national title.”

Basketball Alberta’s Executive Director, Paul Sir commented: “Basketball Alberta is honored and excited to be hosting the 2014 Canada Basketball National Championships for the U15 and U17 girls and boys teams at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton. We are committed to creating a true celebration of our great game in Canada and create lifelong memories as we welcome teams, families, coaches and spectators to our community.”
